With its corrugated sides and roof and two doors bolted on, this would have been a quick and cheap structure to build – and take down again too, if the requirement ever arose – whilst still providing much needed shelter for the locomotives it housed. Given the abundance of slate in these locations, the material was used to build much of the infrastructure needed to operate the railways, to the extent that even footbridges were built from slate to provide people with a safe route of passage over the line, particularly when the railway passed through public land on its route to a port or similar transhipment location.
