These trains were designed and built using Japanese bullet train technology that offers a faster, smoother and quieter journey. In 1948 under the newly formed British Railways, Mallard finally recieved the plaques on the boiler sides stating the world speed record for steam traction of 126mph. The locomotive has carried these plaques since right through to today, where the engine is kept at the National Railway Museum, York. Years later with the nationalisation of the railways the locomotive's feat was not forgotten, with 'Mallard' maintaining its celebrity status among the trainspotters of the day while continuing to haul express passenger trains along the East Coast Mainline.
