HYA Bogie Hopper Wagon GBRf Silver 'Coal' 371030 The HYA Bogie Hopper Wagons were introduced from 2007 to transport coal to the UK’s coal-fired powers station. In later years, as the country transitioned away from burning coal the wagons were made redundant and found a new use moving biomass for which they were recoded IIA. The imposing wagons are reproduced faithfully in N scale using an injection moulded bodyshell, complete with interior partitions within the hopper, and hopper doors suspended from the underframe. Further details are added in the form of handwheels, lamp irons, buffers and separate pipe runs, and metal weights are fitted above each bogie for smooth and assured running. Those bogies are finely-moulded replicas of the prototype, fitted with metal wheelsets and with standard N scale couplings fitted into the NEM coupling pockets. BR Mk1 POS Royal Mail Travelling Post Office Red 80318 This Graham Farish model of a POS coach carries all the hallmarks of this iconic design, the distinctive profile of the Mk1 coach is captured to a tee from the bodysides to the roof where finely moulded ventilators can be found. On the bodysides the handles and grab handles surrounding each door are moulded precisely, whilst the handrails aside each loading door are separate metal wire fittings. At either end, the corridor gangway is complete with lamp irons on either side and within, the corridor doors are modelled with the two small windows that is flush glazed – in the same way all of the windows on the model are. Metal grab handles are added to each end individually and metal toilet filler pipes extend to the roof. Footboards are included on the solebars below each door whilst the underframe sports a full complement of equipment, with the truss rod frames modelled in all their glory and flanked by battery boxes, vacuum cylinders and other auxiliary equipment. 3 Plank Wagon 'London Transport' Grey 'B.W.260' Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and over time, a wide range of wagons were developed to suit the varied cargo that the railway companies had been contracted to transport. Among them were short wheelbase, 3 plank open wagons which had hinged sides allowing them to be lowered, aiding the loading and unloading of cargo. The goods carried by such wagons was varied and could range from loose loads like minerals and aggregate to crates, barrels and even single pieces of machinery or equipment. Basically, anything that could tolerate being exposed to the elements could be carried, although loads could also be sheeted if necessary to offer some protection from weather and general railway dirt. The 3 Plank Wagon depicted by this Graham Farish model is created using an injection moulded wagon body, incorporating hinges along each edge and with securing chains represented at each corner. The wooden deck of the wagon is depicted with crisp engraving to define the separate wooden planks, and this level of detail extends to the wagon’s planked sides, both on the inner and outer faces. Below the solebar the W irons, axleboxes and springs are all reproduced to great effect, complete with separate brakes and brake levers. The model runs on spoked wheels which are of metal construction whilst metal buffers adorn the bufferbeams. GWR 7800 Manor '7803' "Barcote Manor" BR Lined Green (Late) The GWR Manor was a versatile 4-6-0 configured locomotive designed with a lighter axle loading than the existing and popular Grange class which enabled the Manor to operate in regions of the GWR where this was not possible with a locomotive of  comparable power. In all, 30 Manor class locomotives were manufactured at Swindon in two batches: 20 between 1938 and 1939 and then a further 10 post nationalisation in 1950 which were designated 5MT. Although initially the performance of the locomotive was deemed at best mediocre, subtle internal refinements made towards the mid 1950s resulted in a successful and popular locomotive. Ninety six of the sets were built by BREL at Derby between 1985 and 1987 and followed on from the design of the Class 141. Initially, the Class 142 exhibited many operational problems including the inability to negotiate tight curves, a lack of power with poor braking and a rough uncomfortable ride. The class was extensively modified in subsequent years to overcome some of these shortcomings with the adoption of a more powerful diesel engine, uprated brakes and a plethora of internal and external detail improvements. Highley Station Yard Crane The Yard Crane is a staple of any goods yard, providing lifting power to transfer goods and other heavy loads to and from rail and road wagons – ready for the onward journey wherever they may be destined. Found in goods yards across the UK, often in multiples to ensure that loads could be transferred without delay, cranes like this were also common sights at docks or any other industrial site where transhipment may be required. This model depicts the crane found at Highley Station on the Severn Valley Railway, and is finished in typical Great Western Railway colours. BR 12T Plywood Fruit Van Late Bauxite Fyffes 'B875823' British Railways (BR) inherited a wide range of rolling stock upon Nationalisation in 1948, much of which was aging or in need of modern replacement and so a programme to build new vehicles soon commenced. These new vehicles were built to a variety of standardised designs, for covered vans most of the new designs centred around a 10ft wheelbase chassis with a metal and wood body on top. Alongside general merchandise vans, several specialist types were built including the 12 Ton Fruit Van which employed a metal chassis whilst the van was constructed from a pair of corrugated metal ends, each with a ventilator at the top. The metal body frame was panelled with plywood sheets, and four small ventilators were fitted along the bottom of each side to ventilate the cargo. As the name suggests, the vans were built to transport fruit but in later years they also found use moving general merchandise. The Graham Farish model is a faithful replica of the BR design, using a precision moulded body that accurately captures the corrugated ends, plywood sides and ventilators, along with finer details like the body framing, door hinges and locking mechanisms. The roof includes the characteristic rain strips above each set of double doors and the rivets securing the roof are neatly moulded at either end. The chassis is similarly detailed, being fitted with separate brake gear, brake handles and vacuum cylinders, complete with the linkage between the two ‘V’ hangers. BR 12T Vent Van Early Bauxite ICI Fertilizer 'B761075' British Railways (BR) inherited a wide range of rolling stock upon Nationalisation in 1948, much of which was aging or in need of modern replacement and so a programme to build new vehicles soon commenced. These new vehicles were built to a variety of standardised designs and the 12 Ton Ventilated Van, which was used to transport general merchandise, was one of the most numerous types of freight vehicle built by BR. Employing a metal chassis, the van was constructed from corrugated metal ends with a ventilator in each, with a metal body frame which was panelled with wood. All manner of merchandise could be transported whilst remaining protected from the elements, and some vans could also be adorned with marketing posters for the products that may be contained within – in the case of this example ICI Fertilizer branding is applied. BR 10T Meat Van Early Bauxite 'B870085' British Railways (BR) inherited a wide range of rolling stock upon Nationalisation in 1948, much of which was aging or in need of modern replacement and so a programme to build new vehicles soon commenced. These new vehicles were built to a variety of standardised designs, for covered vans most of the new designs centred around a 10ft wheelbase chassis with a metal and wood body on top. Alongside general merchandise vans, several specialist types were built including the 10 Ton Meat Van which employed a metal chassis whilst the van was constructed from a pair of corrugated metal ends, in the centre of which was a row of four ventilator. The metal body frame was panelled with wooden planks, and further ventilators were fitted either side of the double doors. As the name suggests, the vans were built to transport meat but in later years also found use moving general merchandise. The Graham Farish model is a faithful replica of the BR design, using a precision moulded body that accurately captures the corrugated ends, planked sides and ventilators, along with finer details like the body framing, door hinges and locking mechanisms. The roof includes the characteristic rain strips above each set of double doors and the rivets securing the roof are neatly moulded at either end. The chassis is similarly detailed, being fitted with separate brake gear, brake handles and vacuum cylinders, complete with the linkage between the two ‘V’ hangers. Metal wheels and axles are employed, along with turned metal buffers; meanwhile for the first time the couplings are fitted via NEM coupling pockets allowing full interchangeability for those wishing to use an alternative coupling system. Class 47/8 47849 BR InterCity (Swallow)  The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s went through various upgrade and refurbishment programmes during their careers, to extend their lives or ready them for new services, resulting in various sub-classes being used to group locomotives that had undergone the same work, or were built with similar features, such as the Class 47/4s which were those locomotives fitted with Electric Train Heating (ETH). Whilst not an official sub-class, some Class 47/4s were fitted with extended range fuel tanks allowing them to work longer distances and such machines were identified by being renumbered into the 478xx series. With their larger fuel tanks, these Class 47s were put to work on cross country routes and following Privatisation, the 47/8s were used by Virgin Cross Country. No. 47849 received its extended range fuel tanks in 1990 and was renumbered from 47570, remaining in InterCity livery long into Privatisation before it was repainted into Virgin colours in 2000 and so making this locomotive suitable for both Era 8 and Era 9 operations. Class 47/4 47555 'The Commonwealth Spirit' BR RF Distribution European The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s served on the front line of BR services for many decades and even in the 1990s, some 30+ years after their introduction, they were still being used for top link services, like hauling the Royal Train or in this case, as part of the fleet used for freight services via the then brand new Channel Tunnel linking the UK and the mainland Europe. The Railfreight Distribution European livery, as distinguished by the large lettering on the bodyside and blue roof, was introduced in the mid-1990s and was applied to distinguish those locomotives allocated to traffic flows serving Dollands Moor and the Channel Tunnel Freight Services, which used the Channel Tunnel from its opening in 1994. The Period 3 coaches were the final development, and the first examples were built in 1933, a year after Sir William Stanier became Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS and so the Period 3 coaches are often referred to as ‘Stanier Coaches’. Whilst passenger vehicles were mostly 57ft in length, several specialist types including catering vehicles, Inspection Saloons and Full Brakes were built to a length of 50ft. The vehicles were constructed with wooden frames skinned in steel and with curved windows, providing a modern contrast to earlier types with their wooden bodies and squarer windows. The Full Brakes were used to carry luggage, parcels and other general merchandise and could be found marshalled as part of both passenger and parcel trains, and with their integral guard’s compartment the guard could often be found travelling here too. Many Full Brakes remained in traffic well into the British Railways era and after the demise of steam too, with some examples ending up in departmental or engineer’s use following their withdrawal from revenue earning service. The Graham Farish model captures the look of Stanier’s design to a tee, with a high fidelity bodyshell featuring expertly moulded handrails, door handles, hinges and even door stops, all replicated crisply on the bodysides. At either end, the LMS pattern gangways are added, whilst end steps are fitted alongside and a metal handrail is included adjacent to them and metal buffers are fitted below. Each window is flush glazed and inside, the guard’s compartment is modelled along with the hand brake wheel. Footboards are fitted along the solebar, below which vacuum brake equipment is present along with the battery boxes, dynamo and other auxiliary gear. After investigating several prototypes, BR decided to place an order with Brush Engineering for 20 locomotives during February 1961. The resulting design became the iconic Brush Type 4 Diesel locomotive, practical, versatile design with a very distinctive cab. Powered with a Sulzer engine and initially rated at 2750hp, the locomotive could achieve a top speed of 75mph with a tractive effort of 55000lb. Building commenced in January 1962 and the first locomotive D1500 appeared in late September of the same year with test runs on the London Midland Region and Western Region. The design was a success and BR went on to order a total of 512 with continuous production through to early 1967, forming the largest single class of main-line diesel locomotives in the UK.  During this time and subsequent years, several variations appeared with an increase in speed and tractive effort to 95mph and 62000lb respectively. Originally fitted with four-character train head-codes, these changed to marker lights, with the addition of high-intensity lights and roof aerials in the late 1980s. Other variations involved the fitting of different types of steam heating boiler for early BR coaching stock, later replaced with electric train heating for use with modern rolling stock. The numbering system started with four figures but changed to five with the introduction of the TOPs coding system which saw the locomotives classified as Class 47 Diesels with variations such as 47/0, 47/2, 47/3, 47/4 and 47/7. By the end of the 1990s, half of the Class 47 fleet had been withdrawn or scrapped, 33 have been converted into Class 57 locomotives and several have been preserved, including the original D1500, now numbered 47401.

Like most engineer’s wagons, these ballast hoppers received aquatic names and were usually known as Seacows or Sealions, but in this case the wagon has been branded ‘Stingray’. Used to carry ballast to work sites where it would be discharged via the chutes at the bottom of the hopper, these Graham Farish models capture every intricate detail of the prototype from the hopper doors to the six separately fitted handwheels that controlled their operation. Added at each end are several separate handrails, along with etched platforms whilst underframe steps and other adornments are also included. Transrail Grey adorns this example, making a fine addition to any post-Privatisation scene.

Constructed at British Rail Engineering Limited, Crewe, the new locomotives were initially classified as 87/2s however this was soon changed to Class 90 as the design featured a completely new body-shell – although much of the technology within was shared with the Class 87s.   Construction of the 110mph rated locomotives was completed in 1990 and the fleet was split between different sectors of British Rail – 15 were allocated to InterCity services, five for Rail Express Systems (mail and parcels traffic) and the remaining 30 for Railfreight Distribution. It soon became apparent that this form of traction offered many advantages over the steam locomotive – the former being ‘ready to use’ as and when required, whereas steam locos had to be kept at the ready even when not required immediately – with the obvious staffing and fuel costs associated with doing so. By the time of Nationalisation in 1948, the LMS had built various shunters and the 12033 series was adopted by BR as the basis for a new standard design of diesel-electric shunting locomotive. As a stop gap whilst the Class 08 was being developed, BR constructed further 12033 series locomotives and these would later be designated as Class 11s. Production of the 08s began in 1952 with the first example, No. 13000, entering traffic in 1953. Construction continued until 1962 and during the ten year period, 996 locomotives were built making the Class 08 the most numerous of all British locomotive classes. In addition, construction of the near-identical Class 09s (26 examples) and Class 10s (171) took the total well above a thousand – the former differed in having higher gearing whilst the latter had different engines and transmission. Built ‘in-house’ at BR’s Crewe, Darlington, Derby, Doncaster and Horwich Works, the 08s were allocated across the BR regions, with many being based at major stations and terminals where stock was marshalled and positioned ready for service, where trains were divided or merged, and of course at many freight facilities. Although they had a top speed of just 15 mph, what the 08s lacked in speed they more than made up for with tractive effort which was more than double that of the 03s and 04s. Although the first example was withdrawn in 1967, just four had gone prior to the introduction of TOPS and despite an ever-decreasing need for shunting locomotives, around a quarter of the Class remained in traffic at the start of the 21st century. Upon Privatisation of British Rail in 1994, EWS inherited many of the survivors, with others going to passenger operators for use as depot shunters. More than a decade later EWS was still operating over 40 of the shunters, with many more in store. Even today, Class 08s can still be found earning their keep at numerous depots, freight facilities and railway workshops. Meanwhile, ever since the first withdrawals Class 08s have been popular machines with heritage railways and today, more than 70 have found a new lease of life in preservation – often carrying out similar tasks to those for which they were designed some seven decades ago.

Cattle Dock Kit A common feature of country stations large and small, whilst market town cattle docks could be very large indeed. Our model is of the one at Yeovil Pen Mill (GWR) Station, Somerset. Livestock (See Modelscene Cows Ref. 5179, Sheep and Lambs Ref. 5177, Pigs Ref. 5176, and Horses Ref. 5178) was conveyed on British railways until around 1973, although many cattle docks remained in place unused, becoming overgrown - an interesting scenic feature.
