Class 23 'Baby Deltic' Headcode Box D5909 BR Blue Another type that has never been produced in N scale, the new EFE Rail models tell the story of this Class of ten locomotives that were ordered from English Electric as part of BR’s 1955 Modernisation Plan. Despite a service life spanning little more than ten years, the Baby Deltics have an interesting past; being rebuilt after just a few short years in service and emerging again with a distinct new look before their premature demise. The EFE Rail models have been designed to portray the real locomotives throughout their working lives so two bodyshells have been produced, one with headcode discs for the as-built examples and a second with central headcode panels. Boasting injection moulded bodyshells with fine relief detail and precision engraving, all of the locomotive’s defining features are recreated in miniature. Separate metal handrails are added aside each cab door and on the nose ends, whilst below the solebar separate tanks are fitted and the bogies are crafted with full brake and suspension detail. Powered by a coreless motor, DCC provision comes in the form of a Next18 decoder socket and space is provided for a speaker for those wishing to add sound. Directional lights are fitted and a switch is provided on the PCB to turn off the red tail lights, or this can be done via a function key when a DCC decoder is fitted. Class 101 2-Car DMU BR Blue The Class 101 Diesel Multiple Units were the most numerous of all the first generation DMUs and had a long service life, remaining in use for almost half a century, and we’re delighted to present N Scale models of this iconic unit as part of the Graham Farish range. This two-car unit depicts a Class 101 in BR Blue livery operating in North East England and is typical of much of the fleet during the British Rail era. Each of the two cars is constructed from precision moulded bodyshells with flush glazing and a high level of raised and engraved detailing, from the ventilators and rivets found on the roof to the door furniture and window frames along each bodyside. Each chassis is adorned with all the underframe components you’d see on the prototype, including the engine, transmission, battery boxes and auxiliary gear. Both vehicles are brought to life with an exquisite livery application, using accurate colours, fonts and logos, and the detail and decoration extends to the interior too, where seating is fitted and painted accordingly, and the cab provides crew seats along with a representation of the control desk. The bogies are moulded with a high level of relief detail and separate footsteps are added where appropriate, meanwhile metal wheelsets are employed and electrical pickups from every wheel provide power for the directional lights at each cab end. Class 87/1 '87101' "Stephenson" BR Blue 36 Class 87 locomotives were introduced from 1973 to work the newly electrified northern section of the West Coast Mainline to Glasgow. These locomotives were based on the successful Class 86 design, featuring a modernised design and capable of generating 5000HP. The final loco in the build was revised to test new thyristor controls and was numbered 87101.   With new Mark 3 coaches, the 87s became known as the Electric Scots and significantly reduced journey times between Euston and Glasgow. The 87s provided front-line service with British Rail and latterly Virgin Trains until 2005, when replaced by Pendolino EMUs, with many locos transferring to other operators or being exported abroad. Class 56 '56131' BR Blue Large Logo The British Rail Class 56 is a type of Co-Co locomotive designed for heavy freight work and was introduced between 1976 and 1983. In all 135 Class 56s were built, the first 30 by Electroputere in Romania but due to poor quality of construction the remainder were built by BREL at their Doncaster and Crewe works. The Class 56 was considered to be a successful locomotive and had a long service life. However performance and maintenance costs savings made from the deployment of the newly imported Class 66 resulted in most of the fleet of Class 56s being decommissioned or sold on by 2006. JGA Bogie Hopper Buxton Lime Industries 'BLI19215' The JGA Bogie Hoppers were built in Slovakia in the mid-1990s for Buxton Lime Industries and Tilcon, primarily working from Tunstead Quarry, operated by Buxton Lime Industries, near Buxton on the edge of the Peak District. Consisting of a large hopper with three pairs of bottom discharge doors, the wagons were used to transport lime products from the quarry for distribution around the UK. Reproduced in N Scale by Graham Farish, the JGA model features a precision moulded bodyshell which captures the wagon’s distinctive sloping ends with their ribbed constructed. Below the solebar, the three sets of discharge doors are added separately, meanwhile a metal weight is concealed above each bogie to ensure smooth running. The bogies themselves are fitted with metal wheels and axles whilst the integrated NEM coupling pockets allow alternative couplings to be fitted with ease. The eye catching white and blue livery faithfully adorns the model, complete with the various markings and operating instructions that are found on the real wagons. Class 47/7 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' BR ScotRail The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s went through various upgrade and refurbishment programmes during their careers, to extend their lives or ready them for new services, and the Class 47/7 sub-class is just one example – these locomotives being fitted with extended range fuel tanks and cab-front jumper cables to work push-pull trains in Scotland. No. 47712 ‘Lady Diana Spencer’ was one of the first twelve locomotives converted to a 47/7, having entered works as Class 47/4 No. 47505, and is modelled in the striking BR ScotRail livery with bold grey, white and blue bodyside bands and large yellow ends and cab rooves. Class 47/4 47555 'The Commonwealth Spirit' BR RF Distribution European The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s served on the front line of BR services for many decades and even in the 1990s, some 30+ years after their introduction, they were still being used for top link services, like hauling the Royal Train or in this case, as part of the fleet used for freight services via the then brand new Channel Tunnel linking the UK and the mainland Europe. The Railfreight Distribution European livery, as distinguished by the large lettering on the bodyside and blue roof, was introduced in the mid-1990s and was applied to distinguish those locomotives allocated to traffic flows serving Dollands Moor and the Channel Tunnel Freight Services, which used the Channel Tunnel from its opening in 1994. They were inspired by the LMS’ and Southern’s pioneer diesel designs and were outwardly similar to English Electric’s Type 4 (subsequently Class 40). Although fitted with a Sulzer 12LDA28 diesel engine capable of 2,300hp, the new BR Type 4s were heavy. Their 133 ton weight required a 1Co-Co1 wheel arrangement. The first, D1, emerged from Derby in 1959 and was named Scafell Pike. The remaining nine locomotives were also named after English and Welsh peaks and the class soon gained the nickname ‘Peak’, which was also applied to the subsequent Class 45s and Class 46s. Although a mixed traffic design, they were initially used on West Coast Main Line passenger services before being transferred en masse to the Midland Main Line. The subsequent arrival of the Sulver Type 4s (later Class 45) meant that the BR Type 4s (which would become Class 44 on TOPS) were allocated predominantly to freight work radiating out from Toton. Consequently, they could be seen as far afield as York or Severn Tunnel Junction. Any small class of locomotive was always under threat and the ‘44s’ were no exceptions. 44003 was withdrawn in July 1976 and all had gone by the end of 1980. Happily, two survive: D8 Penyghent is based at Peak Rail and D4 Great Gable is owned by the Peak Locomotive Company and is based at the Midland Railway-Butterley. - N Scale
