Conflat Wagon GWR Grey 39230 w/ AF Container GWR White We are all familiar with the modern use of containers to move large volumes of freight, but the concept is not a new one as the railway companies of Great Britain began moving goods by the container load before the Second World War. The Great Western Railway (GWR) was an early adopter and the flat bed wagons that it built to carry containers were given the telegraphic code Conflats – a name that stuck. Various containers were built which could be loaded onto the Conflats which had a capacity of two type A containers, or one of the larger type Bs. Containers might be loaded with furniture or bulk goods, or in the case of the type AF containers that were insulated, perishables that needed to stay cool like fresh fish and meat. This Graham Farish model comprises a Conflat Wagon and separate AF Container, allowing the wagon to run loaded or empty while the container also makes an excellent scenic accessory, ideal for a busy goods facility when not employed as a load for the Conflat. Both items are precision moulded with the wagon featuring a planked deck and fine details like the lashing points and chain pocket lids. The container meanwhile boasts an array of moulded details from the lifting points on the roof to the body framing, door hinges and locking mechanisms, plus more lashing points. The Conflat’s chassis is similarly detailed, being fitted with separate brake gear, brake handles and vacuum cylinders, complete with the linkage between the two ‘V’ hangers. Metal wheels and axles are employed, along with turned metal buffers; meanwhile the couplings are fitted via NEM coupling pockets allowing full interchangeability for those wishing to use an alternative coupling system. On the bodysides the handles and grab handles surrounding each door are moulded precisely, whilst the handrails aside each loading door are separate metal wire fittings. At either end, the corridor gangway is complete with lamp irons on either side and within, the corridor doors are modelled with the two small windows that is flush glazed – in the same way all of the windows on the model are. Metal grab handles are added to each end individually and metal toilet filler pipes extend to the roof. Footboards are included on the solebars below each door whilst the underframe sports a full complement of equipment, with the truss rod frames modelled in all their glory and flanked by battery boxes, vacuum cylinders and other auxiliary equipment. 8 Plank Wagon End Door 'Modern Transport Liverpool' Grey 1206 Britain’s Railways were developed primarily to move freight and by the early twentieth century, hundreds of independent companies were operating their own wagons to transport their goods around the UK by rail. Fleet sizes ranged from small concerns with a single wagon to large enterprises whose wagon count could run into the hundreds. The majority of wagons in private ownership were wooden bodied open wagons and by far the most common commodity that they carried was coal, although other materials, including coke, minerals and aggregates might also be transported depending on the nature of business conducted by the wagon’s owner. Various types of 8 Plank Wagon were built, and this Graham Farish model depicts one with fixed ends, unloading would therefore be via the side doors and bottom discharge doors, which on the model are neatly engraved into the wagon’s bodyshell which is moulded with crisp plank lines and ironwork detailing. Below the solebar the W irons, axleboxes and springs are all reproduced to great effect, with separate brakes and brake leavers and metal door stops completing the look. BR Carflat Wagon BR Bauxite 'B748719' Carflat Wagons allowed cars to be transported by rail, a practice that had started during the early twentieth century but which became more common after World War Two as more families began realising the dream of owning their own motor vehicle. Many were built from old coach underframes that had had their bodies scrapped, with the type really coming to the fore in 1966 when British Rail launched its Motorail service, providing British holidaymakers with long distance train services where they could take their car on holiday with them, giving the convenience of independent transport whilst on holiday but without the long drive to get there. This Graham Farish model depicts a BR-built Carflat, which to all intents and purposes is a standard BR Mk1 coach underframe running on a pair of BR B1 bogies. The deck of the vehicle is planked, and low side railings are fitted to prevent vehicles from accidentally driving off the side. Unlike a Mk1 coach, the underside of the vehicle is not overly populated but still features the typical truss frame along with vacuum brake cylinders and, unlike Mk1 coaches, has hand brake levers. The standard N scale couplings fit into NEM coupling pockets that are mounted on close coupling mechanisms, providing close coupling between vehicles but without restricting their use on curves, while metal wheelsets are fitted to the bogies to complete the model. 5 Plank China Clay Wagon GWR Grey '94054' China Clay Wagons were synonymous with Cornwall where the largest deposit of Kaolin, known more commonly as china clay, had first been discovered in 1746 by William Cookworthy. The resulting industry made Cornwall the pre-eminent global source of china clay and as railways were established, they were used to transport the material both locally and further afield, to destinations where the material was required, like the Staffordshire potteries. The GWR, and subsequently BR, built open wagons like the one depicted by this Graham Farish model specifically for china clay traffic. With a 9ft wheelbase and 12T capacity, the wooden planked body sat on top of a metal underframe and our model reflects this, with fine detailing engraved and moulded onto the body. The chassis meanwhile incorporates brake gear and sports tie-bars between the axleboxes, along with metal door bangers and turned metal buffers. Spoked metal wheels and NEM coupling pockets complete the model, which is finished in a beautiful and authentic rendition of the GWR Grey livery. Among them were short wheelbase, 3 plank open wagons which had hinged sides allowing them to be lowered, aiding the loading and unloading of cargo. The goods carried by such wagons was varied and could range from loose loads like minerals and aggregate to crates, barrels and even single pieces of machinery or equipment. Basically, anything that could tolerate being exposed to the elements could be carried, although loads could also be sheeted if necessary to offer some protection from weather and general railway dirt. The 3 Plank Wagon depicted by this Graham Farish model is created using an injection moulded wagon body, incorporating hinges along each edge and with securing chains represented at each corner. The wooden deck of the wagon is depicted with crisp engraving to define the separate wooden planks, and this level of detail extends to the wagon’s planked sides, both on the inner and outer faces. Below the solebar the W irons, axleboxes and springs are all reproduced to great effect, complete with separate brakes and brake levers. The model runs on spoked wheels which are of metal construction whilst metal buffers adorn the bufferbeams. Authentic colours and typefaces are employed during the livery application process, completing this high-fidelity model. JGA Bogie Hopper Buxton Lime Industries 'BLI19215' The JGA Bogie Hoppers were built in Slovakia in the mid-1990s for Buxton Lime Industries and Tilcon, primarily working from Tunstead Quarry, operated by Buxton Lime Industries, near Buxton on the edge of the Peak District. Consisting of a large hopper with three pairs of bottom discharge doors, the wagons were used to transport lime products from the quarry for distribution around the UK. Reproduced in N Scale by Graham Farish, the JGA model features a precision moulded bodyshell which captures the wagon’s distinctive sloping ends with their ribbed constructed. Below the solebar, the three sets of discharge doors are added separately, meanwhile a metal weight is concealed above each bogie to ensure smooth running. The bogies themselves are fitted with metal wheels and axles whilst the integrated NEM coupling pockets allow alternative couplings to be fitted with ease. The eye catching white and blue livery faithfully adorns the model, complete with the various markings and operating instructions that are found on the real wagons. Class 47/7 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' BR ScotRail The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s went through various upgrade and refurbishment programmes during their careers, to extend their lives or ready them for new services, and the Class 47/7 sub-class is just one example – these locomotives being fitted with extended range fuel tanks and cab-front jumper cables to work push-pull trains in Scotland. No. 47712 ‘Lady Diana Spencer’ was one of the first twelve locomotives converted to a 47/7, having entered works as Class 47/4 No. 47505, and is modelled in the striking BR ScotRail livery with bold grey, white and blue bodyside bands and large yellow ends and cab rooves. The real locomotive survives in preservation today, and has recently been returned to service on the main line, in much the same 1980s condition as depicted by our model. ‘Lady Diana Spencer’ takes full advantage to the recent upgrades that have benefited the Graham Farish Class 47, namely the technical advancements which see the model boasting a Next18 DCC decoder interface, pre-fitted speaker, cab lighting (when used on DCC) and independent control of the directional lights at each end. Class 47/8 47849 BR InterCity (Swallow)  The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s went through various upgrade and refurbishment programmes during their careers, to extend their lives or ready them for new services, resulting in various sub-classes being used to group locomotives that had undergone the same work, or were built with similar features, such as the Class 47/4s which were those locomotives fitted with Electric Train Heating (ETH). Whilst not an official sub-class, some Class 47/4s were fitted with extended range fuel tanks allowing them to work longer distances and such machines were identified by being renumbered into the 478xx series. With their larger fuel tanks, these Class 47s were put to work on cross country routes and following Privatisation, the 47/8s were used by Virgin Cross Country. No. 47849 received its extended range fuel tanks in 1990 and was renumbered from 47570, remaining in InterCity livery long into Privatisation before it was repainted into Virgin colours in 2000 and so making this locomotive suitable for both Era 8 and Era 9 operations. Class 47/4 47555 'The Commonwealth Spirit' BR RF Distribution European The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s served on the front line of BR services for many decades and even in the 1990s, some 30+ years after their introduction, they were still being used for top link services, like hauling the Royal Train or in this case, as part of the fleet used for freight services via the then brand new Channel Tunnel linking the UK and the mainland Europe. The Railfreight Distribution European livery, as distinguished by the large lettering on the bodyside and blue roof, was introduced in the mid-1990s and was applied to distinguish those locomotives allocated to traffic flows serving Dollands Moor and the Channel Tunnel Freight Services, which used the Channel Tunnel from its opening in 1994. Class 47/7 47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' BR ScotRail The Class 47 was British Railways’ most prolific class of main-line diesel locomotive and so it’s no surprise that high fidelity models of these ever-popular machines are available in N Scale as part of the flagship Graham Farish range. Such was their success that Class 47s went through various upgrade and refurbishment programmes during their careers, to extend their lives or ready them for new services, and the Class 47/7 sub-class is just one example – these locomotives being fitted with extended range fuel tanks and cab-front jumper cables to work push-pull trains in Scotland. No. 47712 ‘Lady Diana Spencer’ was one of the first twelve locomotives converted to a 47/7, having entered works as Class 47/4 No. 47505, and is modelled in the striking BR ScotRail livery with bold grey, white and blue bodyside bands and large yellow ends and cab rooves. LMS Stanier 50ft Full Brake BR Maroon 'M31248M' Features: Pristine BR Maroon livery Running No. M31248M Accessory Pack NEM Coupling Pockets Close Coupling Mechanism Length 115mm (over couplings) The LMS built coaches to three distinct patterns, known commonly as Period 1, 2 and 3 coaches. The Period 3 coaches were the final development, and the first examples were built in 1933, a year after Sir William Stanier became Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LMS and so the Period 3 coaches are often referred to as ‘Stanier Coaches’. Whilst passenger vehicles were mostly 57ft in length, several specialist types including catering vehicles, Inspection Saloons and Full Brakes were built to a length of 50ft. The vehicles were constructed with wooden frames skinned in steel and with curved windows, providing a modern contrast to earlier types with their wooden bodies and squarer windows. The Full Brakes were used to carry luggage, parcels and other general merchandise and could be found marshalled as part of both passenger and parcel trains, and with their integral guard’s compartment the guard could often be found travelling here too. Many Full Brakes remained in traffic well into the British Railways era and after the demise of steam too, with some examples ending up in departmental or engineer’s use following their withdrawal from revenue earning service. The Graham Farish model captures the look of Stanier’s design to a tee, with a high fidelity bodyshell featuring expertly moulded handrails, door handles, hinges and even door stops, all replicated crisply on the bodysides. At either end, the LMS pattern gangways are added, whilst end steps are fitted alongside and a metal handrail is included adjacent to them and metal buffers are fitted below. Each window is flush glazed and inside, the guard’s compartment is modelled along with the hand brake wheel. Footboards are fitted along the solebar, below which vacuum brake equipment is present along with the battery boxes, dynamo and other auxiliary gear. The bogies are fitted with metal wheelsets, whilst the standard N scale coupling is attached via a NEM coupling pocket to the close coupling mechanism that is fitted to the carriage floor, which operates in tandem with the bogie. After investigating several prototypes, BR decided to place an order with Brush Engineering for 20 locomotives during February 1961. The resulting design became the iconic Brush Type 4 Diesel locomotive, practical, versatile design with a very distinctive cab. Powered with a Sulzer engine and initially rated at 2750hp, the locomotive could achieve a top speed of 75mph with a tractive effort of 55000lb. Building commenced in January 1962 and the first locomotive D1500 appeared in late September of the same year with test runs on the London Midland Region and Western Region. The design was a success and BR went on to order a total of 512 with continuous production through to early 1967, forming the largest single class of main-line diesel locomotives in the UK.  During this time and subsequent years, several variations appeared with an increase in speed and tractive effort to 95mph and 62000lb respectively. Originally fitted with four-character train head-codes, these changed to marker lights, with the addition of high-intensity lights and roof aerials in the late 1980s. Other variations involved the fitting of different types of steam heating boiler for early BR coaching stock, later replaced with electric train heating for use with modern rolling stock. The numbering system started with four figures but changed to five with the introduction of the TOPs coding system which saw the locomotives classified as Class 47 Diesels with variations such as 47/0, 47/2, 47/3, 47/4 and 47/7. By the end of the 1990s, half of the Class 47 fleet had been withdrawn or scrapped, 33 have been converted into Class 57 locomotives and several have been preserved, including the original D1500, now numbered 47401.

Class 90/0 90042 Freightliner 'PowerHaul' Includes: - Pristine Freightliner ‘Powerhaul’ livery - Running No. 90042 - Equipped with a Next18 DCC Decoder Socket – Recommend Decoder item No. 36-567A - Rectangular Freight Buffers - Screw link Couplings - TDM Cables fitted to the Buffer Sides - Large Battery Charger - Battery Boxes and Switch with Hinged Access Panels which are Ribbed - Coreless, twin shaft motor with two flywheels providing drive to both bogies - All axle drive - Electrical pickup from all wheels - Separate metal bearings fitted to each axle - Accessory Bag - N scale Locomotive information and history: Fifty Class 90 locomotives were ordered by British Rail in 1986 to replace the ageing Class 85 fleet on West Coast Main Line duties, whilst also allowing BR to cascade a number of Class 86s to East Anglia. Constructed at British Rail Engineering Limited, Crewe, the new locomotives were initially classified as 87/2s however this was soon changed to Class 90 as the design featured a completely new body-shell – although much of the technology within was shared with the Class 87s.   Construction of the 110mph rated locomotives was completed in 1990 and the fleet was split between different sectors of British Rail – 15 were allocated to InterCity services, five for Rail Express Systems (mail and parcels traffic) and the remaining 30 for Railfreight Distribution. Most of those allocated to Railfreight Distribution would later be downgraded to 75mph and reclassified as 90/1s numbered in the 901xx series following work to isolate the Electric Train Heating and push-pull equipment making them dedicated freight locos. Upon privatisation the Class 90 fleet was split between Virgin Trains, EWS and Freightliner. By 1999 all of the Class 90/1s acquired by EWS had been converted back to 90/0s due to an increased requirement for passenger locomotives to work contracted ScotRail sleeper trains and for hire to GNER for East Coast Main Line services. Further renumbering by EWS occurred when nine locos were fitted with different brake blocks and these became Class 90/2s numbered in the 902xx series. The Freightliner locos were also converted back to their original specification in the early 2000s. The Class 90s have carried numerous liveries including three decorated in European liveries for the Freightconnection event in 1992 which coincided with the opening of the Channel Tunnel to freight services. No. 90128 was decorated in SNCB turquoise (Belgium), No. 90129 in DB red (Germany) and No. 90130 in SNCF orange and grey (France) and each carried the name Freightconnection in their respective languages, alongside No. 90022 which was named ‘Freightconnection’ and carried Railfreight Distribution livery.   The majority of the Class have carried names whilst in service and the 90s have appeared a variety of other post-Privatisation liveries such as GNER, DB Schenker, First ScotRail, One (Anglia), Greater Anglia, National Express, DRS and Malcolm Logistics. Today, Class 90s remain in operation with Freightliner, DB Cargo UK (ex-EWS/DB Schenker) and most recently Locomotive Services which has acquired Nos. 90001 and 90002 and repainted them into InterCity Swallow livery for use on charters and excursions.
