By the summer of 1940, even as Hurricanes fought to stem the Luftwaffe tide, engineers were developing a major upgrade. The Hurricane Mk.II arrived with an uprated Merlin engine, but its thick, straight wing design meant it would find its true calling beyond traditional dogfighting roles. The Hurricane IIc variant, armed with four devastating 20mm Hispano cannons, proved highly effective in coastal anti-shipping raids and low-altitude 'Rhubarb' strikes into occupied Europe. Its powerful armament excelled against ground targets, whilst the aircraft also found success as a nightfighter and 'Hurribomber' in North Africa's desert campaigns. This particular aircraft, Z3897, gained fame through a Pathé newsreel featuring mock combat against a captured Junkers Ju88, showcasing the Hurricane's impressive manoeuvrability. The aircraft was the personal mount of Belfast-born William W. McConnell, who served with RAF No.1 Squadron from May 1941 through March 1942, becoming a noted ground attack specialist.  His Hurricane wore distinctive nose artwork that made it instantly recognisable, a testament to the personal connection between pilot and machine during those crucial wartime years.

Ford Transit Mk.4 RAC The Ford Transit Mk4 represented the 3rd generation of the vehicle in real life, spanning the years from 2000 to 2006.  This vehicle was different in that it had been designed in the USA and contained many cutting edge features; it came with automatic transmission; front or rear wheel drive; more cargo space and greater towing capacity. An option on rear wheel drive models included controls mounted on the dashboard, a specially adapted manual mode, tow-haul mode, economy mode and winter mode. All of these plus points would have made it an ideal vehicle for the RAC, whose key role is helping motorists in distress in all conditions and sometimes over difficult terrain. Our model is registered VE03 GGZ from 2003 and is decorated in the ultra modern bright orange with red and white chevron back with a blue and white panel promoting the RAC. To the sides and front, the printed information is in white against the orange ground, as well as a dark blue and white panel masked along the sides. A notable feature is the clever way in which the offside front wing chevron decals have been printed over the curved surface – it is absolutely flush!  The van interior is moulded completely black. A final tooling modification on this release sees the addition of a roof bar positioned right at the back of the roof – authentic down to the final detail! - 1:76 Scale

Vauxhall Astra Mk2 GTE 16V, Rembrandt Silver (1:43) Product Information: The GTE 16V modelled was originally registered as a ‘Vauxhall Fleet Management’ car with Vauxhall Motors Ltd, Kimpton Road, Luton, Bedfordshire on 29th November 1990. It was finished in Rembrandt Silver, one of the more unusual colours offered.  Like all 16V GTE’s, it featured GM’s futuristic Liquid Crystal Display dashboard so drivers could see the revs rapidly rising on the car’s magnificent 2-litre DOHC 16-valve ‘red top’ engine, a characterful rev-hungry unit that gave the GTE its appealingly raucous demeanour.  It went on to owners based in Kent, Dorset, County Durham, and Bedfordshire, before being purchased by Bedfordshire-based enthusiast, Lee Proctor, a former Vauxhall employee and subsequent car bodyshop proprietor, in late March 2013. The car had covered 125,000 miles and was complete, but in poor condition. It was bought by Lee as a restoration project, and he soon embarked on a three-year nut-and-bolt structural and mechanical rebuild to concours standard, in which he used as many new old-stock original parts as possible.  He did most of the work himself, bringing the car back to original specification except for the fitting of an ‘Astra Champion’ leather interior, which he had retrimmed. Lee enjoyed driving and showing the finished car, but in November 2020 he sold it to fellow enthusiast and Mk2 Astra Owners Club member, Derbyshire-based Clive Emery.  He has added some original equipment finishing touches and enjoys using it to attend classic car events. This die-cast model represents this car in its restored condition, making it a delightful addition to your Vanguards collection.

U.S. Tanker Standing with M3 Grease Gun Despite efforts to simplify its design, the M1A1 Thompson submachine gun was still a time-consuming and expensive gun to manufacture. Research and development of a cost effective alternative resulted in the M3 “Grease Gun.” Produced by the General Motor’s Guide Lamp Division, it was a stamped, sheet-metal surrogate for the primarily milled Thompson. With its riveted and welded construction, the M3 was originally designed as a disposable small arm, to be used and then discarded once it became inoperative. This simple weapon permitted the installation of a conversion kit – a replacement bolt and barrel, recoil springs, and a magazine adapter would change the weapon’s original .45 caliber to that of 9 mm Parabellum.   - 1:30 Scale

Corgi Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000, Carnival Red (1:43)

Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000, Carnival Red -1:43 This die-cast model is based on one of the oldest surviving UK-market examples of an RS2000, which was manufactured in Saarlouis, Germany, in December 1975. The first owner was Mike Collins, then RAF personnel, based at RAF Dishforth, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. He purchased it from the Ford RS dealership, Polar Service Garage, Barnsley on 12th January 1976, then registered it the following day.  It had ten further owners before the current custodian, well known North Wales-based Ford enthusiast Aled Hopwood, purchased it on 7th June 1996. He wasn’t initially aware of its rarity but was captivated by it and has amassed a comprehensive history file containing all the previous MOTs and tax discs, plus a list of previous owners. The car had covered 73,000 miles and was in excellent condition, and Aled enjoyed using it on several European tours, as well as the North Wales Snowdonia Tours and Lakes Tours. It was featured extensively in the book ‘Factory-Original Sporting Mk2 Escorts’, by Dan Williamson, with many detailed photographs of the car by Simon Clay being included in the RS2000 chapter. It has also appeared in Classic Ford Magazine.  In the summer of 2021, Aled embarked on a nut-and-bolt restoration to as-new condition. He returned the underside to its original dove grey paint before having it fully resprayed, although all the original panels and Beta Cloth interior were retained.  Aled proudly showed the finished car at the 2021 NEC Classic Motor Show.

Oxford Diecast DH Mosquito NF MkII P.G.Wykeham-Barnes. RAF No.23 Sqn. (1:72)

This 1:72 scale Oxford aircraft represents a No. 23 Squadron Mosquito which was deployed to RAF Luqa in Malta. The squadron was the first to use the Mosquito in the Mediterranean, having transferred there in December 1942. Its key role was to perform intruder and bomber escort missions attacking enemy  infrastructure in North Africa and Southern Italy, often flying low and fast. The Mosquito’s versatility played a vital part, with great success. Wing Commander Peter Wykeham-Barnes was the commanding officer at Luqa and was to become one of WWII’s famous Bomber Aces, surviving the conflict and highly decorated too. Born on 13 September 1915 in Sandhurst, Surrey, Peter Wykeham-Barnes joined the RAF as an aircraft apprentice in 1932. Later he became a cadet at RAF College, Cranwell and was commissioned in 1937. After a series of deployments at home and abroad, he took over 23 Squadron on Mosquito II night intruders, leading the unit out to Malta. Whilst with 23 Squadron his navigator was 116970 Flying Officer Geoffrey Ernest Palmer, DFC. Together, they were a formidable team with great successes against the Luftwaffe. Wykeham-Barnes ended the war with 3 and 1 shared biplane victories and a total of 14 and 3 shared destroyed. Post-war, he took an Air Ministry post followed by secondment to the USAF in Korea, where he flew night intruder sorties in B-26 Invaders of the 90th Bomber Group, USAF, and was awarded the US Air Medal.  He ended his career in UK defence  as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and retired as Air Marshal Sir Peter Wykeham, KCB, DSO and Bar, OBE, DFC and Bar, AFC.  He died on 23 February 1995. With so much history behind it, our heroic model appears decorated in the night fighter garb of dark grey and dark green upper side and matt black underside with matt black nose, dorsal patch, guns and rear tyres. On the upper side, the No Step warning signs in red indicate the fragility of the structure in the area between the two engines which would not support any weight.  Also in red are the aircraft identity markings DZ230 and YP-A along the length of the fuselage. The RAF roundel also features a yellow outer circle to make it more easily visible to other friendly aircraft. The island of Malta was awarded the George Cross for its bitter battles against the enemy during WWII and without doubt the DH Mosquito played a great part in its success. - 1:72 Scale

Good-natured and high-spirited, he possesses a strength and tenacity that make him a respected leader and commander. He is also one of the world’s fastest freestyle swimmers and is a past Olympic champion with the butterfly stroke.

Oxford Diecast Land Rover Discovery 4 - West Midlands Police (N)

Land Rover Discovery 4 - West Midlands Police Our model Discovery 4, registered BX11 KHB, is based on the upgraded vehicle which Land Rover introduced in 2009, designed by their chief designer, Gerry McGovern. By 2011, the year of our model, Land Rover had introduced improvements, mostly mechanical with emphasis on engines and gearboxes, including an upgraded 3.0L engine – one TDV6 option and the second the SDV6 engine and with a further choice of GS or XS trim. The interior had also been upgraded with contemporary luxury and technological refinements. Against this background, our 1:148 scale vehicle is a replica of that used by West Midlands Police who must have loved the high powered and comfortable Discovery. Decorated in white with the bright blue and yellow chequered sides, the white roof has the Police vehicle number printed in black to aid visibility from the air. The SDV6 GS marque is printed in silver on the back alongside the Land Rover badge. Note the West Midlands Police insignia on the rear side windows and also on the bonnet. Rover 75 V6 Contemporary SE, Ski Blue Includes: - Detailed diecast model - Interior detailing - Front Grill detail - Rear detailing - Display stand - Collectors Card - 1:43 Scale Vehicle information: When the development of project R40, as the Rover 75 was known internally, began in earnest at Longbridge, the mood was optimistic because, to joint-venture partner Honda’s surprise, BMW had purchased the company in February 1994. They injected the development cash the business had hitherto lacked. The resulting car was launched at the Birmingham Motor Show on October 20th, 1998 and was praised for its elegant exterior design by stylist Richard Woolley and very British interior ambience. Production commenced at Cowley, Oxfordshire, but when BMW sold the company in May 2000 it was moved to Longbridge. The 75 remained in production until 2005 by which time 211,175 had been produced. The automatic 2.5-litre V6 Rover 75 modelled was sold new by MG-Rover dealers Vantage-Preston and was first registered in July 2005, just three months after the Longbridge-based company went into administration.  It features the later-revised bumpers, grille and single-light facelifted nose treatment launched in 2004, which gave the 75 a more modern look, although it cleverly used the same lamp base units with a new single lens on top. Since November 2022, it has been owned by Greater Manchester-based Rover 75 enthusiast Tim Hubbard, who bought it because it showed a genuine 87,000 miles and was in very good overall condition. The 75 and its MG-badged ZT cousin have now acquired a strong following in the classic car world and values are increasing.

Lt John Chard Includes: - Detailed diecast painted figure - Anglo-Zulu War Collection - Certificate of the figure - Matte Paint finish - 1:30 Scale Historical information: On 22 January 1879, 32-year-old Lieutenant John Rouse Merriott Chard set out for Rorke’s Drift with the news that Zulus had been spotted moving on the British camp at Isandlwana. Chard’s engineer’s eye was crucial. He decided to defend the Drift; it was a wise decision since any attempt to retreat would undoubtedly have exposed the men to a Zulu attack on the open veldt. He directed that a line of barricades be run in front of the post. His soldiers would be sheltered by a wall of mealie bags and biscuit boxes above their own head height. This put the Zulu warriors fighting with close-quarter weapons at a fatal disadvantage. The battle had cost the lives of approximately 600 Zulus, while just 17 British soldiers were killed – a testament to the effectiveness of Chard’s barricades.

Registered F981 ENV from 1998, ours is representative of the last year of manufacture. In real life, the Discovery 1 followed some of the finer features of the Range Rover with the same chassis, suspension and 4 wheel drive system. It was designed, however, at a more affordable price point so it came with smaller engine sizes and initially a three door option. It was also the first Land Rover aimed at the daily driving family market whilst still maintaining the off road facility. In addition, it provided more luggage space and was the only model with a 4 cylinder petrol engine option as well as the diesel alternative. The Discovery 1 came with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox Another innovative feature was the interior for which Land Rover engaged the help of the Conran Design Group.  The result was a uniform interior colour scheme regardless of exterior paintwork, comprising a signature Sonar Blue to seats and carpet. The car also featured magazine holders above the windscreen, hand-holds for rear passengers built into the front seat head rests, new radio controls on the instrument cluster, two removable sunroof panels and a Land Rover branded cloth fabric holdall in the front centre console for storage. This unique ‘bag’ could be removed and with a detachable shoulder strap could be used as a fashion accessory.  A collector’s item in itself! The remainder of the interior and dashboard features of the Discovery 1 were taken from the existing Rover Group stable, including the instrument panel, digital clock, heater and air conditioning controls. A nod to nostalgia comprised the distinctive Morris Marina door handles. Our 1:76 scale model incorporates all the fine visual features of the original. The interior replicates the authentic Sonar Blue, enhanced with a Sonar Grey dashboard, steering wheel and door panels. Additional interior features include black floor mats, grey interior door handles, gearstick and hand brake. The exterior bodywork is a metallic red colour scheme with black and silver trim. Side body and rear window flashes are finished in grey, silver and a fine blue stripe.  Detailed roof bars, rear mud flaps, wheel centres and bolts are all black. The spare wheel appears fixed off centre on the rear full width door to the right of the  number plate. The Discovery 1 retained the chunky utility vehicle function for which Land Rover was historically renowned, while incorporating many refinements aimed at comfort and economy in an ever competitive automotive world.
