Railroad: Royal Mail Travelling Post Office 80331 The Traveling Post Office (TPO) has been a fixture on Britain’s railways since mail was first carried on trains in the 1830s.  The sorting of mail in transit gradually reduced in the 21st century as mechanised sorting at depots became commonplace and concerns about the safety of workers carrying out letter-sorting at increased main line speeds. The last TPO using carriages in the UK took place during the night of 9th January 2004. After that, a fleet of Royal Mail-branded Class 325 EMUs continued to carry parcels by rail, but these too ceased in 2024. TPOs could collect and deposit mail on the move by means of lineside apparatus. Several of these vehicles have survived in preservation. A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality. The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley's ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier. Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station. The next vehicles in the rake are coaches ‘C’ and ‘D’ and these comprise of two identical first class open coaches which offered enhanced comfort and also had a lavatory at each end. Initially only three types were built, Tourist Second Opens, First Opens and Brake Second Opens, but some First Opens were later converted into Restaurant First Buffets, whilst several Brake Second Opens were fitted with a driving cab at one end, becoming Driving Brake Second Opens for push-pull use. The DBSOs were used in Scotland to work push-pull services, usually with a Class 47/7 locomotive at the other end that had been specially modified to allow push-pull operations. When it comes to the Bachmann Branchline model, we’ve gone to great lengths to replicate every detail of the Mk2F DBSO in miniature. The Distinctive Mk2 shape is captured to a tee whilst on the roof, the ventilators are expertly moulded, and the toilet panel is completed with metal wire grab handles. The inner end features separately fitted metal handrails, the corridor gangway doors are modelled faithfully, even down to the two small windows, and the end footsteps at each corner are also included. Additional accessories are supplied which can be fitted to the inner end, including the ETH socket and cabling, along with pipework and dummy knuckle couplings. It's the cab that makes the DBSO instantly recognisable amongst the Mk2 fleet and here, every detail has been considered, from the glazed cab windows with their separate window wiper to the corridor gangway with its optional cover. Again, a full set of bufferbeam pipework and accessories is included, along with the obstacle deflector, a characteristic feature of the DBSOs when viewed front-on. The light clusters complete the front end and working lights are fitted as standard. On the bodysides each door is complete with hinges, handles and even door bumper details, whilst the flush, tinted glazing gives these coaches their characteristic streamlined appearance. Take a look below the solebar and you will find a full complement of equipment – all necessary for the braking, electrical and air-conditioning systems. The bogies are fitted with metal wheelsets that run in metal bearings, with each bogie constructed from several components to ensure that the springs, suspension, brakes and, where relevant, footsteps can all be modelled in full relief along with additional details like the speedometers found on the DBSOs. The tension lock couplings fit into NEM pockets that are mounted on a close-coupling mechanism which is fitted to the coach floor, operating in tandem with the bogie as it turns. Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport. Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives. Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
