LNER 12T Ventilated Fruit Van BR Bauxite (Early) Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and the early railway companies employed vans of many different designs to transport goods and merchandise that required covered transport. Each railway company had its own designs, some of which were intended for specific traffic like this Fruit Van built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). The fruit vans sported louvres at each end and ventilators on the roof to allow fresh air to circulate within, keeping fruit fresh during its journey. This Branchline models depicts one of those wooden bodied vans and the planked body is replicated with fine engraving, with precision moulding to capture every detail of the sliding doors and their mechanism, topped off with a separately fitted metal door handle. On the roof, the six ventilators are each moulded in full relief before being added individually, the central pair being offset as per the prototype. The chassis employs metal wheelsets of the 3-hole disc variety around which safety loops are added from formed metal wire, whilst the brakes, brake handles and associated gear is all included. Railroad: Royal Mail Travelling Post Office 80331 The Traveling Post Office (TPO) has been a fixture on Britain’s railways since mail was first carried on trains in the 1830s.  The sorting of mail in transit gradually reduced in the 21st century as mechanised sorting at depots became commonplace and concerns about the safety of workers carrying out letter-sorting at increased main line speeds. The last TPO using carriages in the UK took place during the night of 9th January 2004. After that, a fleet of Royal Mail-branded Class 325 EMUs continued to carry parcels by rail, but these too ceased in 2024. TPOs could collect and deposit mail on the move by means of lineside apparatus. Several of these vehicles have survived in preservation. BR FVX Carflat Wagon BR Blue 'Motorail' 'B745075' Carflat Wagons allowed cars to be transported by rail, a practice that had started during the early twentieth century, but which became more common after World War Two as more families began realising the dream of owning their own motor vehicle. Many were built from old coach underframes that had had their bodies scrapped, with the type really coming to the fore in 1966 when British Rail launched its Motorail service, providing British holidaymakers with long distance train services where they could take their car on holiday with them, giving the convenience of independent transport whilst on holiday but without the long drive to get there. This Bachmann Branchline model depicts a BR-built Carflat, which to all intents and purposes is a standard BR Mk1 coach underframe running on a pair of BR B1 bogies. The deck of the vehicle is planked, and low side railings are fitted to prevent vehicles from accidentally driving off the side. JGA Bogie Hopper VTG Grey 'VTG 19214' The JGA Bogie Hoppers were built in Slovakia in the mid-1990s for Buxton Lime Industries and Tilcon, primarily working from Tunstead Quarry, operated by Buxton Lime Industries, near Buxton on the edge of the Peak District. Consisting of a large hopper with three pairs of bottom discharge doors, the wagons were used to transport lime products from the quarry for distribution around the UK and the type remains in use in limited numbers today. Reproduced in OO Scale by Bachmann Branchline, the JGA model features a precision moulded bodyshell which captures the wagon’s distinctive sloping ends with their ribbed constructed. Below the solebar, the three sets of discharge doors are added separately, meanwhile a metal weight is concealed above each bogie to ensure smooth running. The bogies themselves are fitted with metal wheels and axles whilst the integrated NEM coupling pockets allow alternative couplings to be fitted with ease. Separate brakes are added and the bogies each sport spring and suspension detailing in full relief. Whilst it could be said that the plain grey livery is the very definition of simplicity, the model’s paintwork is applied flawlessly complete with the VTG lettering and logo alongside the various markings and operating instructions that are found on the real wagons. BR VBA Van EWS '200557'  In the late 1960s British Railways required air braked stock to operate its new Air-Braked Network services – which would later be known as Speedlink -  and the Cov AB (Covered, Air Braked) van provided the answer, becoming BR’s first general purpose air braked van. Introduced from 1969, the Cov ABs had a modern appearance in comparison to the wooden box vans in widespread use at the time and the side of the van was constructed from a pair of doors, providing large openings for loading/unloading. When the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) was introduced in the 1970s the vans were given the TOPS code VAB, VAA, VBA or VBB. Grey Britain’s Railways were developed primarily to move freight and by the early twentieth century, hundreds of independent companies were operating their own wagons to transport their goods around the UK by rail. Fleet sizes ranged from small concerns with a single wagon to large enterprises whose wagon count could run into the hundreds. The majority of wagons in private ownership were wooden bodied open wagons and by far the most common commodity that they carried was coal, although other materials, including coke, minerals and aggregates might also be transported depending on the nature of business conducted by the wagon’s owner. This model forms part of our new Railway Celebrations range, selected because of its close links to the Stockton & Darlington area and because it symbolises the revolution that the railways provided. Tarslag operated a fleet of hundreds of wagons to carry furnace slag and road asphalt and their operations embodied the freedom of movement afforded by the railway revolution, with concerns in Wolverhampton on the Great Western Railway and Stockton on Tees served by the LNER amongst others, trains including Tarslag wagons would be seen across the UK. The Bachmann Branchline model portrays a 5 Plank Wagon with side doors to aid loading and unloading, and a steel floor. 12t Tanker Wagon, BP Shell 'A5066' The tank wagon was the main method of transporting liquid cargo in the early days of the railway. Instead of loading liquids into drums or barrels and then having to load these on and off closed or open vans at each side of a journey, the tank wagon could be filled with the fluid of choice of the operator and then emptied at the other end. The first wagon was in service from 1892.  Design for the ‘Loriot’ wagons evolved to include sloping ramps at either end, enabling the machinery to be loaded and unloaded quickly and efficiently. Previous versions featured low, wide wells and no end ramps.  A new wagon in the series, ‘Loriot Y’, was constructed in 1937 to Diagram G39 and its number was No. 41989. An update to the design included ‘I’ beam girders rather than rolled beams and end-axle guard plates. No. 41990 (DW41990 under BR) was the second Loriot Y wagon to be constructed in 1939. The wagon conveyed excavators and other plant machinery over the GWR network. During the Second World War, the two wagons were used constantly to transport bulldozers for when there was wartime bombing. The ‘Loriot Y’ wagon model represents the prototypical wagon under BR ownership. The running number, DW41990, is emblazoned on the side. Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport. Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives. Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
