British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975 with improved standards of comfort in response to competition from airlines and increased use of private motor cars.
Designed and built by BREL, initially they were intended as locomotive-hauled stock, but with the development of the High Speed Train (HST), were soon adapted for use at speeds of up to 125mph (220km/h). The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST.
Mk3 coaches continued to be built until 1988, but multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell were built until the early 1990s. The standard length of a Mk3 coach is 75ft (23m), which is ten feet longer than its predecessor, the Mk2, and is of monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin.
GWR-liveried Mk3 coaches were formed into full-length HST sets and from 2019, in sets of four, to operate as GWR ‘Castle’ sets, which ran as such until May 2024.
This RailRoad coach model represents a Trailer Guard Standard coach in GWR livery.

Virgin operated several sets of these coaches for use with its HST power cars. Following introduction of its Pendolinos, most of Virgin’s Mk3 coaches moved on to other operators, though it did retain one set for peak time cover and had them refurbished at Doncaster and painted into the same livery as its Pendolino and Voyager trains. However, these too were stood-down in November 2014 when they were transferred to Abellio Greater Anglia.

British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975 with improved standards of comfort in response to competition from airlines and increased use of private motor cars.
Designed and built by BREL, they were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock, but with the development of the High Speed Train (HST), were soon adapted for use at speeds of up to 125mph (220km/h).

Following the success of the LNER’s newly-introduced ‘Coronation’ trains in 1935, a new train was introduced to operate between London King’s Cross and Leeds and Bradford in 1937.
A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality.
The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley's ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier.
Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station.
The next vehicles in the rake are coaches ‘C’ and ‘D’ and these comprise of two identical first class open coaches which offered enhanced comfort and also had a lavatory at each end. Those coaches are the ones presented in this highly detailed OO gauge coach pack.

SR Bulleid Brake Comp. Corridor 10" Vents BR (Ex-SR) Malachite Green
The much-requested Diagram 2406 Brake Composite Corridor is the latest model to join the highly acclaimed Bachmann Branchline range of Bulleid Coaches. Built by British Railways in the months following Nationalisation, these BCKs were used as ‘loose’ coaches to strengthen services at peak times or were included in trains from which they would be detached part way through a journey. The Atlantic Coast Express is a prime example of the latter, whereby as many as six BCKs heading for alternative destinations might be coupled to the main set upon departure from London Waterloo, and then progressively removed during the journey to then be hauled as part of a local or branch service, or simply as a single coach, to their final destination.
Produced to the same high level of detail and fidelity as the current Bullied Coaches from Bachmann Branchline, these new models capture every element of Bulleid’s modernistic design to a tee. Every model incorporates a wealth of detail including separately fitted components such as roof vents, lamp irons, toilet filler & overflow pipework and the portrayal of a complete vacuum pipe-run between the sockets at each end of the vehicles. The bogies incorporate electrical pickups, brake details and footsteps as appropriate whilst authentic interiors are also included along with full underframe gear.

SR Bulleid Brake Composite Corridor 10" Vents BR (SR) Green
Features:

Accessory Pack
NEM Coupling Pockets
Close Coupling Mechanism
Length 270mm (over couplings)

Details on this Model:

Pristine BR (SR) Green livery
Running No. S6733S
10” Window Ventilators

RailRoad: BR, Mk3 TGS Coach 'W44008' BR Blue/Grey Inter-City
This Trailer Standard Open ‘TSO’ InterCity Mk3 coach is an ideal coach to add to the B.R. High-Speed Train Set to increase the rake of coaches between the two Class43 Diesels. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive-hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers and a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries. Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988.

RailRoad: GWR, Class 800, MC Coach '814001'
This GWR Class 800 Motor Composite (MC) coach is one of the five coaches you need to recreate a full GWR Class 800 train. This is the perfect complement to the GWR Class 800 train pack that consists of the drive and dummy unit - you can add just this coach or any of the other two coaches available. The Class 800 trains were developed as replacements for the long-serving Class 43 HSTs and were first introduced on the Great Western Main Line in October 2017. Manufactured by Hitachi Rail, 36 five-car sets were built between 2014 and 2018 as part of the UK Government’s ‘Intercity Express Programme’ (IEP) and branded ‘Intercity Express Train’ (IET). The trains are bi-mode, capable of working along the newly electrified sections of the route, while diesel engines allow them to reach destinations that have not yet been electrified. An intended fleet of purely electric Class 801 ‘IETs’ were instead built to bi-mode specification in 2017/8, due to delays in completing electrification work, and these were designated as Class 800/3s. There are currently 21 of these running as nine-car sets.
Sets designated Classes 800/1 and 800/2 operate as nine and five-car sets respectively under ‘Azuma’ branding for operator LNER on the East Coast Main Line. The GWR ‘IET’ sets are numbered 800001-800036 and 800301-800321 and several of these trains have been given two names, one on each of the driving units. These are mainly the names of well-known people from history, including famous sportsmen and women, politicians, decorated war veterans and members of the Royal Family, with the driving units each carrying a different name (some sets do have just one name). Interesting exceptions include 800010 which has ‘Paddington Bear’ at one end and his creator ‘Michael Bond’ at the other, and 800316 which is named ‘Lionesses’, in honour of the England Ladies football team. The GWR’s historic past is not forgotten either, and 800004 is named ‘Isambard Kingdom Brunel’ and ‘Sir Daniel Gooch’, both eminent engineers associated with the original Great Western Railway.

RailRoad: BR, Mk3 FO Coach '41003' BR Blue/Grey Inter-City
This First Open ‘FO’ InterCity Mk3 coach is an ideal coach to add to the B.R.

Charles B. Collett developed a new range of standard coaches from 1922 to coincide with the reintroduction of the chocolate and cream livery onto the company’s network. These covered a wide variety of types, but the most common type introduced between 1925 and 1929 was the ‘bow-ended’ corridor coach, of which several hundred were built at Swindon.
The idea of the ‘bow ends’ was to reduce the length of the corridor connections between carriages following complaints from nervous passengers about walking across them when the train was travelling at speed. They went on to form the backbone of main line sets for 20 years.

The idea of the ‘bow ends’ was to reduce the length of the corridor connections between carriages following complaints from nervous passengers about walking across them when the train was travelling at speed. They went on to form the backbone of main line sets for 20 years.

Avanti West Coast, Class 390, 'Climate change' Coach Pack 1
This Class 390 Coach Pack in its striking Climate Change livery includes First Class trailer car J and Standard trailer car U.
Introduced in July 2002 for high-speed electric passenger services, 53 eight/nine-car Class 390 units were initially built for use on the WCML on lease from Angel Trains. These were transferred from Virgin Trains to Avanti West Coast in December 2019. Another four of the tilting sets were added between 2010 and 2012. From 2012, 31 of the original units were increased to 11-coach sets, including set No. 390121, which in 2021, was decorated in a special ‘Ride Against Climate Change’ livery to mark Cop26 – the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.
Pair these useful Coach Packs with the R30444 Avanti Class 309 4-Car Train Pack and, with different combinations, you can create a train of any number of cars from six through to eleven.

Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk breaks and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972.
Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a.
Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers as well as a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988.
The Mk3 coach is perhaps most iconic in its original production livery of the BR Grey and Blue. It is in this livery that the coach, as well as the matching Class 43 units would be introduced, before high speed rail services in the UK would be rebranded into the Intercity Executive livery.
Following the privatisation of the Railway network, Mk3 coaches would find themselves in many colourful liveries, some harking back to the original blue and grey livery of times gone by.

Vehicle information:

Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery
Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies.
Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport.
Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives.
Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives.
Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
