GCR 9J (J11) 64305 BR Black (Early Emblem) The Great Central Railway was a big mover of goods and amongst the locomotives it built for this purpose were the 9J 0-6-0s. Upon becoming part of the LNER in 1924 the 9Js were reclassified as J11s and this designation stayed remained into British Railways life and until withdrawal. Nicknamed ‘Pom Poms’ because their exhaust noise sounded very similar to the guns of the same name, these freight workhorses are replicated in OO scale by Bachmann Branchline. The J11s carried all the hallmarks of a locomotive designed by the GCR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G. Robinson and these features are replicated on the Branchline model using a precision moulded boiler, smokebox and firebox mounted on a diecast metal running plate. The distinctive Robinson cab is another high-fidelity moulding, within which boiler backhead is replicated using an array of separately fitted pipework, controls and dials, all of which are enhanced further with bespoke decoration. Railroad: Class 66 66022 'Lafarge Charnwood' EWS Entering service in 1998, this was one of the original 250 locomotives ordered for EWS.  Funded by Locomotion Capital Ltd, it was leased to EWS until December 2008. No. 66022 was one of 60 locomotives sub-let to its Euro Cargo Rail subsidiary in France, starting in June 2006. It was then sold by to Angel Trains, who leased it to DB Schenker Rail UK, but the locomotive remained in service in France, returning to the UK for heavy maintenance when required via the Channel Tunnel. Railroad: Class 66 66601 Freightliner 60th Green First introduced in 1998, the Class 66 revolutionised the rail freight sector in Britain and have become the most prolific type for heavy freight work. In 2000, a new 66/6 sub-class was created with a lower gear ratio version enabling heavier trains to be hauled, albeit at slower speeds.  A total of 25 were put into service by Freightliner, numbered 66601-625 and some of these have since moved overseas for use with Freightliner Poland. Railroad: BR Class 60 60069 'Humphrey Davy' Coal Sector The Class 60s were the last heavy haulers built for BR. No.60069 was allocated to BR’s Train Load Freight (TLF) Coal Sector and named ‘Humphrey Davy’, in honour of the inventor of the miner’s safety lamp.  Following the break-up of TLF, the Class 60s were divided between three of the shadow franchises: Mainline Freight, Loadhaul and Transrail Freight, but not long after they were formed they were absorbed into English, Welsh & Scottish (EWS). By 2007, it was estimated that the operational fleet was down to just 60 locomotives, the rest either in store or undergoing repair. That year, EWS was acquired by DB Schenker, a wholly-owned subsidiary of German railway company, Deutche Bahn.  Our RailRoad Class 60 model represents 'Humphrey Davy' in detail, but with added features that make for a much more durable locomotive. Hornby Railroad: BR Class 90 90001 'Royal Scot' LSL Intercity

Railroad: BR Class 90 90001 'Royal Scot' LSL Intercity  As the first member of class (originally to be designated Class 87/2 as the locomotives were seen as an upgraded version of the existing Class 87s), 90001 initially went to the Rail Technical Centre at Derby for testing in October 1987.  It entered service at Willesden depot in October 1987 and, in 1989, was named ‘BBC Midlands Today’. That name was removed in 2004 and, ten years later, it was given the name ‘Crown Point’ while based at Norwich with Abellio Greater Anglia. In April 2020, it was bought by Locomotive Services Limited, Crewe for main line excursion work. They repainted it in the original InterCity ‘Swallow’ livery and renamed it ‘Royal Scot’. Railroad: BR Class 90 90020 'Collingwood' EWS The Class 90 is a type of locomotive designed for mixed traffic work on the 25kV AC overhead network as replacements for aging electrics such as the Classes 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85 that dated back to the 1960s.  Between 1987 and 1990, 50 examples were built at BREL Crewe and put into traffic on the West Coast Main Line during the latter years of British Rail and were equally at home on freight as they were on passenger traffic. Following privatisation of BR, the type served with various operators, such as Abellio Greater Anglia, Virgin Trains West Coast, GNER, and freight operators Freightliner and EWS.  This RailRoad locomotive model of 90020 is depicted during its time as part of the EWS fleet when named ‘Collingwood’, in a striking red and yellow livery. Railroad: BR Class 91 91018 'Robert Louis Stevenson' Intercity A total of 31 Class 91s were built between 1988 and 1991 for high-speed express passenger train haulage as part of the East Coast electrification programme of the late 1980s. Also known as InterCity 225s in anticipation of their service speed of 225km/h (140mph), they were also referred to as ‘Electras’ by BR during their development phase.  No. 91018 was built at BREL Crewe and entered service in 1990. It received the name ‘Robert Louis Stevenson’ in November 1993, and this was changed to ‘Bradford Film Festival’ in February 2000. It was modified to Class 91/1 in 2002 and renumbered 91118, and remained in service until withdrawn by LNER in May 2020, before going into storage. Railroad: BR Class 37 37501 'Teesside Steelmaster' ROG British Steel Blue Built by English Electric at its Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on started life in January 1961 as D6705, going new to Stratford depot in London.  After becoming 37005 under TOPS, it was rebuilt as a Class 37/5 in April 1985, which included replacing its EE generator with a new Brush unit, and a complete re-wire, with a consequent renumbering to 37501. It was then painted into its distinctive British Steel pale blue colour scheme, gaining Thornaby Kingfisher motif and British Steel logos. It was then named ‘Teesside Steelmaster’ in 1987.  It was later modified for the proposed Channel Tunnel sleeper ‘Nightstar’ project (which was later aborted) to become a 37/6 in February 1995 and renumbered to 37601. It is currently one of six Class 37s leased by Rail Operations Group from Europhoenix for contracted movement of passenger stock, including EMUs. Railroad: BR Class 47 47749 'Atlantic Collage' RES This OO gauge model locomotive represents a Class 47 example that emerged from Crewe Works in February 1965 as D1660.  It was allocated to Swansea’s Landore MPD, before being named ‘City of Truro’ at Truro station in June that year. It became 47076 under TOPs, then was reclassified as a 47/4 in November 1984, when it became 47625. In the 1990s, it became part of the RES pool for operating mail and parcels trains and, in November 1995, was modified to 47/7b, with longer-range fuel tanks and equipment for operating with a propelling control vehicle (PCV). It was renumbered and again in April 1989, when it became a 47/8 and was given the number 47823, before becoming 47787 as part of the EWS fleet and being named ‘Windsor Castle’. Previously, it had carried the names ‘SS Great Britain' and ‘Victim Support’. Railroad: BR Class 60 60038 'Avesta Polarit' EWS  A growth in demand in the heavy haulage sector led to a review of BR’s available motive power in the 1980s.  With 185 locomotives of the Type 5, 3,000+ horsepower category available, made up of its Classes 56 and 58, it was clear that more would be needed, and BR put out an invitation to tender for new locomotives in 1987. The 100 locomotive order was awarded to Brush in Loughborough, and these entered service between 1989 and 1993. No.60038 was named ‘Bidean nam Bian’ after the Scottish ‘Munro’ in Glen Coe.  With BR’s trainload freight business broken up into shadow franchises, the locomotive became part of Loadhaul, based in the north-east. By 1996, this had become part of EWS and 60038 was named 'Avesta Polarit' after the steel making company, at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19th March 2002. Railroad: BR Class 08 08256 BR Blue A total of 996 of the diesel electric shunters were built at various BR works between 1952 and 1962. As the standard BR general-purpose diesel shunter, the type became a common sight at major stations and freight yards across the country.  The locomotive this model example is based on started life as 13326 in November 1956, having been completed at Darlington, and was new to New England, Peterborough. It later served at Sheffield Darnall, Tinsley, Finsbury Park, Hitchin, Startford and finally, from May 1968 at Colchester, from where it was withdrawn in February 1984. Railroad: GWR County 1013 'County of Dorset' BR Lined Green  The ‘County’ Class was the last of the GWR-designed two-cylinder 4-6-0s, with 30 built at Swindon between 1945 and 1947 to the design of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Frederick Hawksworth.  ‘County of Dorset’ entered service in February 1946 and spent most of its early years in the West Country at Bristol, Plymouth, Truro and Penzance, before transferring to Shrewsbury in December 1951. Hornby Railroad: BR Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' BR Lined Green

Railroad: BR Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' BR Lined Green Built as the replacement for ‘Princess Royal’ Class 4-6-2 46202 ‘Princess Anne’, which was destroyed in the Harrow and Wealdstone rail disaster of 1952, the Riddles-designed ‘Pacific’ was intended as the first of a new batch of modern locomotives that would serve BR for many years to come.  Completed at Crewe in 1954, plans to build more were turned down by the Railway Executive because the design was too expensive and complex. As a result, ‘Duke of Gloucester’ remained unique, with its three-cylinder configuration and Caprotti rotary cam-driven valve gear. It had an operational life of just eight years, being withdrawn in 1962. One of its cylinders was saved for display in the National Railway Museum, while the other was removed to balance the locomotive before going for scrap in South Wales.  It was, however, saved in 1974 and a restoration lasting 13 years ensued, including building new cylinders from scratch. LNER Flying Scotsman & GWR Pendennis Castle (Australian Tour) Train Pack  In 1988, Australia celebrated its bicentenary and, to mark the occasion, the world-famous ‘Flying Scotsman’ was invited to travel from Britain to take part in a series of railtours that were part of the ‘Aus Steam 88’ Festival, arriving in October that year.  Already resident in Western Australia since 1977, in the care of the Pilbara Railway Historical Society, former GWR ‘Castle’ Class 4-6-0 ‘Pendennis Castle’ was moved by road to Perth in early 1989 to operate alongside its one-time rival ‘A3’ Class ‘Pacific’. This unlikely reunion occurred almost 9,000 miles from where a week-long locomotive exchange once took place between the LNER and GWR, in April 1925.  This LNER and GWR Train Pack celebrates that landmark event in Australia 37 years ago in 1989. This Collection marks 150 years since Sir Gresley's birth, and this locomotive includes a figure.  With a shiny new blue livery and NEM tension lock couplings, this steam locomotive is a wonderful collector's piece.  Entering service with the LNER as 4498 in Garter blue with streamlined side-skirting and red wheels, this was the 100th Gresley ‘Pacific’ to be built when it emerged from Doncaster Works in October 1937. Allocated to King’s Cross ‘Top Shed’ and used on front-line express services such as the prestigious ‘Coronation’ between London and Edinburgh, ‘SNG’ was built with a single chimney and had stainless steel numbers and letters for the tender added at a general overhaul in January 1939.  After a period in wartime black, when the side-skirts were permanently removed, the locomotive returned to lined Garter blue in March 1947. Painted into BR’s express passenger blue in September 1950, as 60007, it set a post-war steam record speed of 112mph on 23 May 1959. This Collection marks 150 years since Sir Stanier's birth, and this locomotive includes a figure. With a shiny bold red livery and NEM tension lock couplings, this steam locomotive is a must-have for collectors. The ‘Princess Coronation’ Class, also known as the ‘Duchess’ Class, was an enlarged and improved version of William Stanier’s successful ‘Princess Royal’ Class ‘Pacific’. The first ten class members emerged from Crewe Works in a streamlined form during 1937 and five of these were put aside specifically for hauling the prestigious ‘Coronation Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow Central. These were painted in Caledonian blue and had silver horizontal lining, which matched the carriages they pulled. No. 6220 set a new British steam speed record of 114mph in 1937, but this was beaten by the LNER’s ‘Mallard’ in 1938. Built with a single chimney, 6220 was the last of the original 15 to be fitted with a double blast pipe and chimney in 1944. Stanier 5MT 'Black 5' 45055 BR Lined Black (Early)  Completed in November 1935, this ‘Black Five’ was built at Vulcan Foundry, near Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire.  It spent most of its working career in north-west England and North Wales, though in 1966 it had brief allocations at West Hartlepool and York, before moving back to the Liverpool area and serving at Bank Hall and then Aintree. The first two also later converted.  Even then, 2004 was fitted with an experimental butterfly valve blastpipe bypass and the last two also had design differences, meaning that none of the six were built the same. History: This locomotive started out as 5901 when it emerged from Crewe Works in August 1933, but was later renumbered to 5540. It became 45540 under BR in May 1948 and survived in service until condemned in April 1963 and was scrapped by July that year.  The locomotive’s name, transferred from withdrawn ‘Large Claughton’ 1161, was in honour of Sir Robert Turnbull, former General Manager of the LNWR, who was knighted in 1913. - OO Scale

GWR Saint Class 2920 'Saint David' BR Lined Black (Early) Of the 77 Saint Class members built by GWR between 1902 and 1913, 2920 ‘Saint David’ was one of the 47 that survived beyond nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948. Part of the third batch of 20 to be built in 1907, the locomotive was new to Cardiff Canton shed. It underwent several changes during its career, including the fitting of a superheated boiler in 1909 and outside steam pipes in December 1932. This model is presented in BR livery, the condition in which it operated through to its withdrawal in October 1953, by which point it was one of the last four still in service. This model was developed with the helpful guidance from the Didcot Railway Center who kindly gave us access to their archive of drawings and access to the Lady of Legend locomotive. The Saint class model features a powerful 5 pole skew wound motor, flickering firebox and is designed to be fully compatible with the HM7000 21-Pin decoder for full DCC and sound control. Class 57xx Pannier 9669 BR Late Crest The 5700 class were introduced in 1929, whilst the 8750 class followed in 1933 and by 1950 863 locomotives had been constructed, making this perhaps the most successful 0-6-0. G.W.R. Classification: Group C, Route Blue, changed to yellow under B.R. B.R. Classification: 3F. Designed for shunting and short freight workings, however it soon became clear that other duties could be performed such as branch passenger working and mainline freight, being widespread across the system. The 8750 class can be distinguished from the 5700 class by the totally enclosed larger cab. Whistle shields and bunker steps with handrails were added from 1936. A new water feed was introduced in 1942 with the clack valves being fitted inside a case on top of the boiler in front of the dome, which became standard for builds after 1944. Between 1956 and 1963, thirteen 5700 locomotives were sold to the London Transport being painted in the attractive lined red livery. The NCB bought five 5700 locomotives between 1959 and 1965, with number 7754 still working in 1975. Last of class withdrawn: 1966. LNER Azuma Class 801/2 801207 'Darlington' Train Pack (Rail200) The ‘Azuma’ Class 801/1 and 801/2 sets, were introduced on the East Coast Main Line between 2017 and 2020. They are a development of the Class 800 bi-mode trains in the Hitachi AT300 product range, produced at their Newton Aycliffe facility in the north-east, but unlike their bi-mode counterparts, the Class 801s are the purely electric version of the ‘Azuma’, although they are fitted with ‘emergency’ diesel engines to allow them to limp home in case of overhead power failure.  The Class 801/2s are the full nine-car length trains, whereas the 801/1s operate as shorter five-car sets, often used in pairs. The first of the full-length Class 801/2s ran in November 2019, entering service on front-line London King’s Cross-Edinburgh trains, allowing the bi-mode Class 800/1s to be cascaded onto King’s Cross-Aberdeen services, which in turn replaced the remaining InterCity 125 sets on that route. There are currently 30 Class 801/2 sets in operation. Five of which are named, including Set No. 801207, which on 14 January was unveiled by LNER to mark the 200th Anniversary year of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.  The power cars carry LNER, ‘Azuma’ and ‘Railway 200’ markings, with the legend ‘Darlington’ towards their front ends. The five-car pack includes powered PDTRBF (Pantograph Driving Trailer Restaurant Buffet First) and non-powered PDTS (Pantograph Driving Trailer Standard) cars, plus three matching coaches; two MS (Motor Standard) cars and a MF (Motor First) car. LNWR G2 574 LNWR Black The London & North Western Railway (LNWR) was known as the Premier Line and one of its premier freight locomotives, in terms of power and ability at least, was the G2 Class. This Bachmann Branchline model brings the G2 to OO Scale with a high fidelity rendition of the early-twentieth century powerhouse. With an impressive level of detail and a high performance mechanism, the Branchline G2 is the complete package and now for the first time, this model is available with the option of SOUND FITTED (see item No. 31-482SF). The model employs a diecast running plate, along with further metal components to provide an impressive weight ensuring the model’s strength and power match its prototype’s. Meanwhile, those components produced in plastic are precision moulded, with details such as rivets and boiler bands crisply reproduced. Separate parts are then added to enhance the authenticity of the model further, from the metal handrails to the whistle and safety valves, each of which are turned brass. The smokebox door is hinged and can be posed open or closed, whilst within the cab, controls, dials and pipework are all moulded authentically and decorated accordingly. The locomotive’s diecast chassis is enhanced with brake blocks, brake rigging and sandboxes with separate wire sandpipes. Driving wheels are cast to the correct LNWR pattern, whilst the third pair of driving wheels are flangeless, as on the real locomotives. Moving to the tender and the locomotive to tender drawbar is adjustable to suit individual layout conditions, whilst electrical connections are incorporated into the drawbar and a poseable fallplate is fitted to the tender – not only is this a prototypical feature but it serves to reduce the visual impact of any gap in this area which may be necessitated by operating conditions. The tender itself is finely moulded, with several separately applied details including the lamp irons, tank vents, fire tool holder and handwheels. A realistic coal load is included whilst the tender chassis includes brake rigging and metal wheelsets are employed. LNWR G2 9446 LMS Black The London & North Western Railway (LNWR) was known as the Premier Line and one of its premier freight locomotives, in terms of power and ability at least, was the G2 Class, and their later equivalents, the G2As. The Bachmann Branchline model brings the G2 to OO Scale with a high fidelity rendition of the early-twentieth century powerhouse. This model of No. 9446 forms part of our new Railway Celebrations range and depicts the locomotive that took part in the 100th Anniversary celebrations of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. In 1925, to mark the centenary, a celebration of railways featuring locomotives from the past century was put on by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). Opened by the Duke and Duchess of York – later King Geroge VI and Queen Elizabeth – a procession of locomotives took place over some six miles of line between Stockton and Darlington, passing the royal grandstand and delighting the hundreds of thousands of onlookers who turned out to witness the celebrations. The parade of 53 locomotives intended to showcase the evolution of the steam locomotive, from the early examples to modern designs. The first London & North Western Railway (LNWR) 0-8-0 locomotives were built in 1893, however the G2 was somewhat younger, being built between 1921 and 1922 and No. 9446 was one of 60 locomotives built to this design at Crewe Works. Outshopped as LNWR No. 1012, the locomotive was the first G2 to receive London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) numbering, becoming No. 9446 which was applied in June 1925, along with LMS livery with a high gloss finish in preparation for its participation in the centenary celebrations. No. 9446 would become BR No. 49446 upon Nationalisation in 1948 and the locomotive remained in traffic until April 1964 when it was withdrawn and subsequently scrapped. Designed by Nigel Gresley for passenger services on the Great Eastern Main Line, 73 were built between 1928 and 1937, 52 of them at the LNER’s Darlington Works and the remainder supplied by private builders North British in Glasgow and Robert Stephenson & Co. in Newcastle. Built as No. 2852 in 1936, it became 61652 under BR and is one of the ‘Footballers’, carrying the crest of Darlington Football Club and a football beneath its nameplate. GWR, Castle Class, 5081 'Lockheed Hudson' GW Green Designed as front-line express passenger locomotives, the GWR ‘4073’ Class ‘Castles’ were built over a long period. The first of 155 new locomotives entered traffic in August 1923, while the last was finished at Swindon in August 1950 under British Railways. Sixteen further locomotives – 15 ‘Stars’ and one-off ‘Pacific’ No. 111 Great Bear – were also rebuilt as ‘Castles’, making 171 in total. No. 5081 was built in 1939 and originally named ‘Penrice Castle’ but was renamed ‘Lockheed Hudson’ in 1941. It lost its name following privatisation of BR in 1997, when it was put into GNER colours, but in September 2001, it was named ‘City of Newcastle’ and renumbered 91130 following refurbishment by Adtranz. By 2004, the name had been removed. Under Virgin Trains East Coast, it was named ‘Lord Mayor of Newcastle’ from December 2016. A new livery of LNER red and white was applied when the franchise changed hands in 2018 and the name was retained. Southern Rail, T9 302 This locomotive was completed at the London & South Western Railway’s Nine Elms Works in late December 1900. Of the 66 built, 35 of the T9 Class were completed at Nine Elms, with a further 31 examples built by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow. Nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’ as they consistently ran at speeds of up to 85mph, the last in service was No. 30120, which is preserved as part of the National Collection. Originally paired with a conventional six-wheel tender, it received an eight-wheel watercart version in July 1935. LNER Streamlined B17 City of London 2870 Gresley developed a three-cylinder 4-6-0 to cope with increased loadings on the LNER’s East Anglian passenger services in the shape of the B17 Class, as he could not use his famous ‘Pacifics’ due to weight constraints. Two of the class were given A4-style streamlining in September 1937 for publicity purposes, including No. 2870 Tottenham Hotspur, which was then renamed City of London. They were designated B17/5s, but the streamlining was removed in April 1951. LMS Stanier 5MT Black 5 5047 Known as ‘Black Fives’, or in Scotland as ‘Hikers’, Stanier’s 5MT 4-6-0s were one of the most numerous classes of locomotives built in the UK, with 842 examples built at a variety of locations, including the railway’s own works at Crewe, Derby and Horwich, plus private builders Vulcan Foundry and Armstrong Whitworth, the latter building by far the most with 327 machines. No. 5047 was built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows in 1935 with a domeless boiler and spent most of its career in Scotland. GWR Saint Class - Lord Palmer 2975 Entering service in March 1905 as the unnamed No. 175, it was given the name Viscount Churchill in 1907 and numbered 2975 in December 1912. In February 1924, the locomotive was renamed Sir Ernest Palmer, but when Baronet Palmer gained peerage in June 1933, it was subsequently renamed Lord Palmer in the October. Dublo: BR (Early) Princess Coronation Duchess of Buccleuch 46230   Also known as the ‘Duchess’ Class, Stanier’s ‘Princess Coronations’ were among the biggest and most powerful express passenger locomotives in Britain.  Thirty-five were built at Crewe Works between 1937 and 1948, many having streamlined casing. Ten were set aside for hauling the prestigious ‘Coronation Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow. No. 46230 wasn’t one of those, but it was the first of the third batch of locomotives, which consisted of five non-streamlined versions, and went new to Camden in June 1938 as LMS No. 6230.  At Nationalisation in 1948, the locomotive became BR No. 46230 and was painted in lined Brunswick green as depicted by the model. BR Late Thompson Class A2-3 Watling Street No 60521 Of the 15 newly built A2s, only the first, No. 500, emerged from Doncaster under Edward Thompson while he was Chief Mechanical Engineer. That was in May 1946 and, by the end of the following month, Thompson had retired aged 65. The remaining 14 were built under his successor, Arthur Peppercorn, between July 1946 and September 1947. They had planned to build 25 in total, but Peppercorn cancelled the remainder while he made modifications to the design. His new design became the A2 and the Thompson locomotives were designated A2/3s. No. 92018 went new from Crewe to Wellingborough in October 1954 and was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in April 1967, after a wastefully short career of just 12 years and five months in service. Hornby GBRf Class 67 Bo-Bo 67027 - Era 11

GBRf, Class 67, Bo-Bo, 67027 The Class 67s were constructed by Alstom Meinfesa in Valencia between 1999 and 2000 for EWS. No. 67027 ‘Charlotte’ was named ‘Rising Star’ in 2003. Various changes took place over the years. In 2007, the ownership of the locomotive was transferred to DB Cargo UK. In 2014, the locomotive adopted the DB Cargo UK red livery, changing from the previous EWS red & yellow livery.  Ownership was again transferred to Colas Rail in 2017. To reflect this, the livery was amended to Colas Rail yellow, orange and black at the Toton TMD. The locomotive name changed to ‘Charlotte’ in the same year. In 2022, ownership was transferred to GB Railfreight and repainted in a blue and yellow livery, although this didn't last long as GBRF Rejected the 2 Class 67s and they were returned back to Colas. Class 37 37429 'Eisteddfod Genedlaethol' BR Large Logo Representing the original Cardiff Canton batch of six Class 37/4 conversions is No. 37429, ‘refurbished’ by Crewe Works from No. 37300 (originally D6600) in March 1986. Nos. 37426-37431 were originally planned to join the rest of the sub class on the Scottish Region. However, before they were completed the London Midland identified a more pressing need for this batch, although they were allocated to Canton in South Wales due to this depot’s extensive knowledge of the English Electric Type 3s. The introduction of Electric Train Heat (ETH) fitted locomotives to the restricted weight Cambrian route from Wolverhampton to the Welsh coast allowed InterCity to supplement its tired Mk.1 fleet on London Euston to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli services with air-conditioned Mk.2 coaches, although Mk.1s – often Network SouthEast liveried sets – were still regulars on the summer-dated trains into the 1990s. Unlike their cousins north of the border, the Welsh ‘37/4s’ were primarily passenger machines and they also found themselves allocated to Liverpool Lime St/Manchester Piccadilly/North Wales-Cardiff and Cardiff-Bristol-Weymouth diagrams. Outshopped in large logo livery, it soon gained a small red Welsh dragon logo on the driver’s cabsides, and later acquired the Sir Dyfed / County of Dyfed nameplates from No. 37180 in April 1987. Class 37 37414 Triple Grey Construction Sector The introduction of Class 156 ‘Super Sprinters’ on the West Highland from January 1989 and on the Far North/Kyle lines in the May triggered an exodus of Class 37/4s to freight work. By the end of that year, Laira, Motherwell and Tinsley had gained allocations, while Immingham and Thornaby both acquired three locos each in the middle of 1990, by which point half the sub class were south of the border. One of these was No. 37414, which was on china clay duties in Cornwall until transferred to the North Lincolnshire depot’s FABI pool that September. This loco, which retained its Western Region-style lamp irons at the No.2 end only, had been repainted in the Roundel triple grey scheme with Distribution decals in August 1989, but quickly swapped these for more appropriate Construction brandings after its move. This saw it mostly outbased at Buxton in the Peak District to haul aggregates, cement and the iconic ICI limestone trains.While it wasn’t completely allergic to passenger work during this period, it moved to Crewe Diesel in November 1992 to join the RCMC Regional Railways North West pool, initially to work Liverpool Lime St/Crewe-Cardiff trains, still wearing its classic Railfreight image. In March 1993 it became the first member of the fleet to receive the new Regional Railways livery along with the name Cathays C&W Works 1846-1993, becoming a stalwart of the North Wales coast and the famed ‘club’ trains from Liverpool and Manchester Victoria. It soldiered on until it was stored by EWS in March 2000 and was scrapped at TJ Thomson’s of Stockton exactly nine years later. Accurascale Class 37 37421 Colas

Class 37 37421 Colas Stored by EWS at Motherwell in March 2005 and sold for preservation at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway in 2009, No. 37421 was one of four Class 37s that was purchased by Colas Rail in 2013 for a return to the main line, along with Nos. 37116, 37175 and 37219. While the latter pair debuted for their new owner in the middle of 2014, it would be another year before No. 37421 would re-enter traffic along with BR green-liveried former Harry Needle Class 37/0 No. 37057/D6757, just in time to assist on the newly acquired Network Rail infrastructure monitoring contract. For the next four years, the Colas Class 37/4 was a solid performer on various test formations, until called to South Wales in May 2019 to provide power for Cardiff-Rhymney line commuter turns along with hired-in Nos. 37025 and 37418. This followed a fallow few months when the locomotive was under repair and eventually returned after a bogie swap with No. 37175. The Rhymney workings ended in March 2020 and it was back to test train work, mixed in with NR saloon duties with No. 975025 Caroline and the odd infrastructure duty. Cosmetically, towards the end of that same year it swapped its Colas ‘hard hat’ logos for new diamond stickers, although it has stubbornly retained its unique arrangement of single lamp irons on different sides of the locomotive at each end. Despite the increasing number of Colas HST power cars on the NR services, No. 37421 is still a regular atop PLPR (Plain Line Pattern Recognition) and UTU (Ultrasonic Testing Unit) formations and is expected to remain a key component of the operator’s fleet for several years to come. Accurascale Class 37 37408 'Loch Rannoch' EWS

Class 37 37408 'Loch Rannoch' EWS Arguably the most popular of the Class 37/4s in the British Rail and early privatisation era, No. 37408 Loch Rannoch clinged obstinately to its large logo paint scheme – the last so adorned – until being called to Toton in mid-1998 for a repaint. Following a protracted overhaul, which included a new toughened centre window, it debuted in the revised maroon and gold of its owner EWS, sans-nameplates, in November and wasn’t reunited with its famous name until the following February. Over the next seven years, the former No. 37289 (built as D6989) was a regular performer on loco-hauled services around the country, particularly Birmingham/Crewe-Bangor/Holyhead, Cardiff-Fishguard/Rhymney and Crewe/Manchester, Leeds-Carlisle/Knaresborough and even in Scotland on the Fort William sleeper. It could also be found on a wide variety of freight and even Railtrack/Network Rail test trains and was variously allocated to Crewe Diesel, Motherwell, Cardiff Canton, Toton and Margam during this period.Outshopped in the same livery in March 2002, its rock star status meant that it was never long before it gained various accoutrements, including regular bouts of Eastfield ‘Westies’, silver buffers, white lamp irons, black headcode panels and even Immingham 40B shedplates. It seemed inevitable that Rannoch would return to large logo in due course and would have been a favourite for preservation, but after running away and colliding with its stabled rake of coaches at Rhymney on 1 August 2005 the locomotive was stored and repairs were not authorised. It was eventually scrapped at EMR Kingsbury in January 2008. Class 66 66142 'Maritime Intermodal Three' DB Maritime Blue Once an anonymous EWS maroon and gold class 66, 66142 led the life of a typical EWS 66 from its delivery during August 1999 right through the acquisition by DB up until its turn in the paintshop came in 2019 at the ripe age of 20 years old! Rather than the bright red of DB, 66142 gained the vibrant blue colour of Maritime Intermodal and was named “Maritime Intermodal Three”. During this period Gresley decided that it was time to rebuild 10000 as a three cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler. Subsequently, 10000 was moved to the Doncaster Works on 13 October 1936 and this is where the first drawing for the modification were being prepared. When 10000 was finally released from Doncaster Works in November 1937, it was a significantly different locomotive, being fitted with a diagram 111 boiler that was very similar to the diagram 108 boiler fitted to No. 2006 'Wolf of Badenoch', and with a streamlined casing to the same pattern as the A4 class. As many components as possible from the original W1 were used in the rebuild, including the frames, which were shortened by 1 ½ feet at the front end. Other items, where needed, were sourced from the A4 class, the A3 class or, like the front bogie, from the B17 and an experimental double Kylchap blastpipe and chimney was fitted. The locomotive was turned out in Garter Blue as per some of the A4's (in 1937 this became a standard livery). The cab, while similar to that of the A4 class, 60700 was considerably longer and this led to the locomotive's tender's coal delivery chute having to be lengthened to compensate for the extra distance from the firebox doors. The original tender was retained, but with superficial modifications, such as to the curvature of the front plates and the addition of streamlined plating to the front and rear, although this was partially removed just a year later in 1938. Up to the outbreak of war in 1939 and during the war years, 10000 worked mainly on Kings Cross main line duties and with its power and smooth riding it was a popular engine with the LNER's drivers, though less so with the firemen due to the distance between the shovelling plate and the firehole door. The locomotive also became more 'fitter' friendly after April 1942 when the skirting was removed from ahead and behind the outside cylinders to improve access in wartime conditions. At this time the 10000 was painted in wartime Black livery and with only 'N E' on the tender sides. By 1946 and now repainted in Garter blue livery, the corridor tender was swapped for the streamlined non-corridor tender from 4462 (BR 60004) William Whitelaw and the locomotive was engaged in more varied duties, working occasional passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge from Kings Cross alongside the occasional 'lodging' turns to Newcastle. By 1948 under the new British Railways, the locomotive received the number 60700 and "British Railways" insignia on the tender in Gills Sans font. Following allocation to Doncaster on 25 October 1953, 60700 became a more frequent visitor to Leeds and also worked turns to Sheffield, as well as hauling Doncaster to Peterborough passenger services and various braked goods trains. In a similar circumstance to 10000 never receiving its proposed name of 'British Enterprise' in November 1929, 60700 never received its intended name of 'Pegasus', for which the nameplates were cast on 13 April 1951. At this time the locomotive lost its Garter Blue livery for the new "Express Passenger Blue" with white and black lining. After an interesting and slightly troubled life, the locomotive was scrapped at its Darlington birthplace in 1959. Interesting to note is that as 60700 was going into works for scrapping, the original marine boiler the locomotive was fitted with, had been perched on bricks as steam raising boiler outside the works and outlasted the locomotive by a few years.

Hornby BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 - Era 4

BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 Includes: - BR Black livery - Pipework represented in copper or heat lagging - Detailed cab interior - Accessory bag includes steam cocks - Removable coal load - 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket - Era 4 - OO scale Locomotive information: The British Railways Standard 9F Class was a 2-10-0 steam locomotive, the last of the standardised BR designs. The Robert Riddles design was intended as a long distance heavy express freight locomotive. In total 251 of the class were produced between January 1954 and March 1960, with the final locomotive No. 92220 'Evening Star' being the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The huge length of the 10 coupled driving wheels proved problematic when faced with tight curves, a situation that freight haulage would make inevitable. A solution was found by removing the flanges from the centre driving wheel and reducing the size on the flanges on the second and fourth driving axle's wheels.  Riddles had chosen the 2-10-0 wheel configuration in-order to spread the load of the boiler over a greater area. This meant that the boiler had to be raised considerably compared to other designs to allow the firebox to sit above the trailing driving wheels. As a result, the 9F features a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate. In operation the class proved extremely versatile. Not only did the 9F excel as a freight locomotive, but when required it also succeeded as a passenger locomotive. Reports even suggest that when 92220 'Evening Star' was used to pull the Red Dragon express service between Cardiff and London it was forced to delay its arrival to allow the restaurant services to be completed, having outperformed the normal Britannia Class locomotives used on the service.  This was not the only time 9Fs had been recorded outperforming dedicated express locomotives and on such services the locomotives were capable of running at over 90mph. This combination of high speed, fast acceleration and powerful hauling capabilities mean that many consider the class to be pinnacle of British steam locomotive design. Locomotive numbers 92165-92167 were built with a mechanical stoker. This system used a helical screw to move coal from the tender straight into the firebox. This meant that coal could be burnt a faster rate than a fireman could maintain otherwise.  Systems like this proved extremely useful on long distance American railways however in Britain it was rare for a locomotive to require such as high rate of coal delivery over a long period of time meaning that a good fireman could prove just as effective. Locomotive 92002 was the third such locomotive to be constructed by BR, being built at Crewe in 1954. The locomotive was outshopped with the BR1G tender and in the usual BR black colour scheme. The locomotive would go on to be one of the 106 locomotives withdrawn in 1967, the locomotive would not be preserved.

Hornby BR, Class 60, Co-Co, 60001 'Steadfast' - Era 8

BR, Class 60, Co-Co, 60001 'Steadfast' No. 60001, the first of the Class 60s to be delivered, was handed over to British Rail in 1989 after being ordered only 13 months earlier. The locomotive was named 'Steadfast' as the result of a suggestion competition. Since 1975 these powerful Bo-Bo locomotives have moved passengers across the country for business and for leisure, most ironically in their various BR guises. The Class 43 persists to this day as a stalwart of the rails under various operators including the mainline serving GWR, mainline maintaining Network Rail and some private operators such as Locomotive Services Limited on their Blue Pullman services.  This train pack, designed to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II depicts the Class 43 as they have never been seen before, in a livery questioning exactly how the legendary LNER would celebrate this special occasion if they were still operating, and nationalisation had never occurred. It would be nice to think that if the big four were never nationalised that we would still be able to see steam regularly on the mainline however this view is shrouded in nostalgia and ignores the operational benefits that diesel locomotives bring. If the LNER operated continuously into the modern era, this may be how they would mark this special occasion. The power cars in this set, while adorned with numbers that have been assigned to full size units, have had numbers chosen to celebrate prominent years of the queen’s reign. 43052 has been chosen as part of the numbering pattern for the full size examples and 52 for the year of the coronation, and 43022 follows the same pattern but for this very special year of Her Majesties reign.

Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport. Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives. Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
