The LNER Gresley A4 is one of the most iconic express locomotives in Great Britain, with its streamlined casing a classic symbol of the attitude towards speed and design in the 1930s, which saw increased competition to the railways from road and air travel. The LNER Board knew that they had to make travel between the major cities faster, comfortable and more reliable.
Nigel Gresley, the LNER's Chief Mechanical Officer, travelled on the Fliegende Hamburger diesel locomotive in Germany and was impressed by its streamlining, although he realized it was only efficient at high speeds. Gresley was certain that a modified A3 Pacific, with streamlining, could haul greater loads than other locomotives at the same speed or faster and a series of trials were conducted to confirm the A3's suitability.
With the trials successfully completed, the LNER Board gave Gresley the go-ahead to create the "Silver Jubilee" streamlined trains, the first of the new streamlined A4s.The streamlining of the A4s' steam circuit, higher boiler pressure and extension of the firebox to create a combustion chamber made them more efficient than the A3 as they consumed less coal and water- especially later on when they were also fitted with a Kylchap double chimney. This improved their free steaming capabilities further. Their streamlined design not only made them capable of high speeds, but created an up draught of smoke, obscuring the driver's vision, a major problem on the new Class A4 engines. The story goes that during wind tunnel testing, after several unsuccessful efforts to get the smoke to lift clear, a thumbprint was inadvertently left on the clay model just behind the chimney. This succeeded in clearing the smoke and was incorporated into the final design.
2511 Silver King was the 3rd A4 locomotive to be built, designed to pull the Silver Jubilee service. The locomotive entered service in November 1935 in the unique LNER Silver livery designed for the service. The locomotive would go on to work under BR before being scrapped in 1965, making it one of the longest serving A4 locomotives.

While the A1 was a fantastic locomotive that served its purpose as intended, it became clear reasonably quickly that some modifications could be made that would greatly improve its performance. These modifications however were too significant to avoid reclassifying the locomotives and as such the A1 Felstead 2743 was the first to be withdrawn from service only a handful of years after it was introduced, emerging from its shed in August 1928 as the first A3 ‘Super Pacific.’
The newly designated A3 locomotives had an improved boiler, larger cylinders and a conversion from right to left hand drive. 27 of the class were built as A3 locomotives from the get go, with all of the in service A1 examples being converted before 1950, the last such example to undergo this transformation was the then BR numbered 60068 Sir Visto.
Night Hawk first entered LNER service on the fairly pleasing 24th October 1924 as locomotive number 2577 as an A1 locomotive. Rebuilt in January 1944 to an A3, the locomotive would go in to be numbered 78, and then 60078 under BR. Night Hawk would go on to be withdrawn on the 22nd October 1962, almost making it a nice round 38 years in service, before being scrapped at Doncaster in 1963.

First built in 1898 as a smaller wheel shunting variant of the successful J71 class, the J72 continued to be built, with minor changes over the next 53 years. In 1937 two of the class were fitted with vacuum braking to work as carriage shunters and more followed from 1947 onwards, eventually leading to 41 members of the class being so fitted. Several of the vacuum brake fitted locomotives were repainted in lined passenger liveries by both the LNER and British Railways for use as station pilots. Locomotives so painted were generally keep very clean by shed staff and crews. The 113 members of the class all continued their sterling work until the first locomotive was withdrawn in 1958. The final locomotive was withdrawn out of normal service in 1964 but two were transferred to Departmental Stock, one of these locomotives lasted in this roll until 1967. One member of the class, number 69023 is preserved.

This locomotive was one of a batch of 36 Austerities by Hudswell Clarke of Leeds. This particular one was completed in November 1944 and carried the WD number 71498. Purchased by the LNER in June 1946 the locomotive was classified as a J94 and numbered 8025. The distinctive extended bunker was fitted in November 1949 when it was renumbered 68025 and gained the early BR emblem. The locomotive was based at Darlington 51A until withdrawal in 1963. The locomotive did not survive and was cut up shortly after. The model replicates the period after 1949 and carries the extended bunker, smokebox numberplate and additional steps and handrails on the tank

Often described as ‘the engines that won the war’, these new Graham Farish models are sure to win the heart of any discerning N scale enthusiast. Depicting one of the LNER’s most successful steam locomotive designs, this masterpiece in miniature captures the look and the character of the prototype to a tee. With highly detailed mouldings and many separate parts used on both the locomotive and tender, including era- and prototype-specific detailing to allow accurate models of any given class member throughout their working lives, the performance of these new V2s is just as impressive as their appearance.
A powerful coreless motor and flywheel is incorporated into the diecast locomotive chassis, powering the driving wheels which run in separate metal bearings. With electrical pickup from the driving wheels and tender wheels and the option to have traction tyres fitted to one driving wheelset, this new V2 is on a steady footing as soon as it hits the rails. With a Next18 DCC decoder socket and pre-fitted speaker located in the tender, this model is future proofed for those wishing to operate on DCC, with or without sound. What’s more, a SOUND FITTED version is also available providing realistic sound effects on both analogue and DCC straight out of the box!

The Scotsman Train Set
A journey on a Pullman service would be regarded by many as the pinnacle of rail travel in the steam era. The LNER A1 4-6-2 locomotive and complementary Pullman coaches included in this set represent how the Flying Scotsman™ may have looked in the LNER heyday of the 1930s, that being the Flying Scotsman service and not the somewhat famous locomotive named after it. This service would run non-stop between Edinburgh and London, departing at 10:00 in each direction.
This set contains a starter oval of track and a siding providing a good size layout for you to get started. This included circuit can be expanded with our easy-to-add track extension packs.
This set features working lights in the coaches.
