LNER 12T Ventilated Fruit Van BR Bauxite (Early) Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and the early railway companies employed vans of many different designs to transport goods and merchandise that required covered transport. Each railway company had its own designs, some of which were intended for specific traffic like this Fruit Van built by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). The fruit vans sported louvres at each end and ventilators on the roof to allow fresh air to circulate within, keeping fruit fresh during its journey. This Branchline models depicts one of those wooden bodied vans and the planked body is replicated with fine engraving, with precision moulding to capture every detail of the sliding doors and their mechanism, topped off with a separately fitted metal door handle. On the roof, the six ventilators are each moulded in full relief before being added individually, the central pair being offset as per the prototype. The chassis employs metal wheelsets of the 3-hole disc variety around which safety loops are added from formed metal wire, whilst the brakes, brake handles and associated gear is all included. Railroad: 12T Tank Wagon Mobil Black No.64 Based on the Railway Clearing House standard tank wagon design of 1907, hundreds of these 12-ton wagons were used by private owners to transport liquid products, including fuel oil and kerosene, among other products.  The tanks sat on a wooden frame and were secured using steel bracing straps. They were commonplace through the 1960s, when they started to be replaced by larger capacity tank wagons, though examples could still be found in use into the 1980s.  This OO gauge model tank wagon example is in the distinctive ‘Mobil’ colour scheme. - OO Scale

The Mk4 is an all-steel design which incorporates a number of improvements over the previous Mk3s. Most notably, the inclusion of automatic push-button operated plug-type doors in place of the manually-operated slam doors. The body shells, which were built by BREL and Breda in Milan, also have fully sealed gangways and controlled emission toilets (CETs). Wright's Lock-Up – Laser-cut kit Wright's Lockup is a small but perfectly formed, versatile OO gauge / 1:76 scale lockup / stores building suitable for industrial, town or harbourside scenes. Based on a real life protoype in Penzance, Cornwall, the building features heavily weathered Flemish Bond brickwork with wooden doors, sash windows, slate roof & downspouts. The side wall also features an optional ghost sign for Wright's Electrical, Hot Water & Sanitary Engineers which would have been the local plumbers & electricians back in the good old days. Also included is an alternative set of buff stone wraps which can be used to give the building a more rural feel.  The kit is supplied with laser-cut parts for ease of assembly and comes with fully weathered paper wraps and roof slates, with no additional painting or weathering required on the main components for a "Realistically Better" finish straight from the pack. The window & doors are supplied laser-cut from our eco-friendly laserboard and are packed with detail including engraved planks, hinges and locks. These will require painting with acrylic paints prior to assembly or colouring with suitable markers. We used a Plastikote Stone color for our test build which we then coated lightly with ground pastels to weather them down for a little less prestine finish. The building consists of two floors and features interior wall wraps for both the brick and stone versions, with white wash & flaking paint for added realism. Ceiling and floor details are also included for the upper floor. There's also plenty of scope for customisation too... with the slates being applied in individual strips it's easy to build it in either pristine or derelict condition (or anywhere in between). And with care, you can also pose the doors open or closed. The doors, gates & downspouts are supplied laser-cut from our eco-friendly laserboard and are packed with detail including engraved planks, hinges and locks. These will require painting before assembly, but this can be done quickly and easily with acrylic paints. We used a Plastikote Stone color for our test build which we then dry-brushed with burnt sienna, white & slate grey artists acrylics to create a weathered wood look. The doors and gates can be posed open or closed during the assembly process enabling you to personalise the look and feel of the pigstys as desired. The pigsty building consists of three stys, each with their own small yards. Each of which has the choice of a fine gravel/dirt or slabbed finish which you can select during assembly. And although you'll probably never see them, we've included a complete set of interior wall wraps, should you wish to pose any of the doors open during assembly. There's also plenty of scope for customisation too... with the slates being applied in individual strips it's easy to build the pigstys in either pristine or derelict condition (or anywhere in between). It's really up to you how you use it and the options are endless. The coach house & stables features lots of detail such as hinge overlays on the doors, layered, glazed windows, pre-weathered roof slates, painted white stone wall wraps with brick arches. Soot stained chimneys and separately applied drainpipes complete the realistically better finish. There's even the prototypical uneven roofline, just like you see on many older buildings constructed with detailed roof trusses for authenticity. The roof slates are cut to length and pre-weathered with lots of lichen and staining. Simply glue them on to the marked trusses to create a super-realistic roof. The central larger carriage store is separated from the stables & accommodation via internal walls. These sections also feature a floor between the ground floor and the upper floor, allowing you to go to town with interior detailing on these sections. No interior wraps are supplied for these sections. We've also included an optional solid wooden door which you can use in place of the stable door, making it more suitable for use as an industrial workshop with store room and office. Or fisherman's cottage with workshop/boat store and net loft. The kit is straightforward to assemble with paper texture wraps over a series of MDF base layers which leave no unsightly joints visible when construction is complete. As with many of our kits, there are some small, delicate parts in the kit, so tweezers are definitely recommended.  You will need to paint the doors, windows, guttering and downpipes etc as these are supplied unpainted. Artists acrylic paints or "rattle can" spray paints are recommended prior to assembly. Some of the larger unpainted parts can be easily coloured with a simple permanent marker. BR VBA Van EWS '200557'  In the late 1960s British Railways required air braked stock to operate its new Air-Braked Network services – which would later be known as Speedlink -  and the Cov AB (Covered, Air Braked) van provided the answer, becoming BR’s first general purpose air braked van. Introduced from 1969, the Cov ABs had a modern appearance in comparison to the wooden box vans in widespread use at the time and the side of the van was constructed from a pair of doors, providing large openings for loading/unloading. When the Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) was introduced in the 1970s the vans were given the TOPS code VAB, VAA, VBA or VBB. Used to transport general merchandise, the vans were often marshalled into mixed goods trains as opposed to being operated as uniform rakes and could carry all manner of general merchandise. By the 1980s their traffic was reducing and so commenced their withdrawal although a small number remained in service towards the end of the century, coming under private ownership following Privatisation. The Bachmann Branchline model employs a highly detailed bodyshell which boasts precision moulded panel lines, door handles and mechanisms, and fine rivet detailing. At either end a separate lamp iron is present, along with metal buffers and a cosmetic coupling hook. The solebar includes prototypical detailing along with the door runners, whilst the wagon’s suspension and brake gear is added using separate components. The metal wheelsets are mounted on a pivoting frame, allowing this long wheelbase wagon to traverse tight curves with ease whilst NEM coupling pockets are also incorporated. The majority of wagons in private ownership were wooden bodied open wagons and by far the most common commodity that they carried was coal, although other materials, including coke, minerals and aggregates might also be transported depending on the nature of business conducted by the wagon’s owner. This model forms part of our new Railway Celebrations range, selected because of its close links to the Stockton & Darlington area and because it symbolises the revolution that the railways provided. Tarslag operated a fleet of hundreds of wagons to carry furnace slag and road asphalt and their operations embodied the freedom of movement afforded by the railway revolution, with concerns in Wolverhampton on the Great Western Railway and Stockton on Tees served by the LNER amongst others, trains including Tarslag wagons would be seen across the UK. The Bachmann Branchline model portrays a 5 Plank Wagon with side doors to aid loading and unloading, and a steel floor. These details are faithfully replicated on the model, with neatly engraved plank lines and finely moulded metal work and rivets. Anchor points were provided on the wagon floor so that loads could be tied down, and the cargo could be sheeted if necessary to offer some protection from weather and general railway dirt. The ‘Lowfit’ wagon depicted by this Bachmann Branchline model was so called because of its low sides and fitted brakes and on the Branchline model, the wagon body is injection moulded, incorporating hinges along each edge and with securing chains represented at each corner. The wooden deck of the wagon is depicted with crisp engraving to define the separate wooden planks, while the metal rings fitted to each anchor point are replicated too. LNER, Gresley Corridor Passenger Brake '4239' This highly detailed Gresley Corridor Full Brake Coach is presented in a varnished teak finish with printed decoration including the LNER branding and its unique number 4239. This coach does not have windows as it wasn’t meant for carrying passengers, it contained the guard’s van. The model has detail underneath and metal wheels for finer running. Hornby’s Gresley 61ft 6in coaching stock represents a standard design that Nigel Gresley continued from his days as CME at the Great Northern Railway, through to the LNER at the Grouping in 1923, with very little change to the basic layout of each vehicle.  Finished in varnished teak, these LNER standard vehicles were ahead of their time, with Pullman-type gangways and buckeye couplings, that would later become standard on BR-built coaching stock. However, the wooden teak-panelled bodies were more traditional than modern, with square mouldings and windows. BR, Gresley Corridor Buffet Car 'E12505E' Gresley’s standard LNER 61ft 6in coaches were solidly built, and despite being a design inherited from the GNR in 1923 and built until 1942, many of them lasted in service until 1965, working alongside BR Mk1 coaches, which they were compatible with. The varnished teak finish was vulnerable to extremes of weather and required constant maintenance to stop them from looking tatty with peeled varnish and cracked panels. Because of this, BR painted the wooden panels crimson and cream after nationalisation, with all-over crimson for the full brake vehicles. A total of 38 former LNER teak coaches have been preserved, including some that have been restored to a varnished teak finish. - OO Scale

Railway Wagon Weighbridge (OO) One of the fundamental aspects of safety on the railway was that wagons should never be overloaded. To do so would risk trains not having sufficient braking capacity to slow and stop safely. To manage loading at many industrial locations, each wagon would pass over a Weighbridge - to check their weight. Each wagon would display its tare weight, which could be deducted from the total weight, to ascertain the net weight of the load - simple mathematics! The new Ratio kit is a great representation of a typical Weighbridge, not dissimilar to the one, once located at Shildon Wagon Works in the North East. The first wagon was in service from 1892.  Design for the ‘Loriot’ wagons evolved to include sloping ramps at either end, enabling the machinery to be loaded and unloaded quickly and efficiently. Previous versions featured low, wide wells and no end ramps.  A new wagon in the series, ‘Loriot Y’, was constructed in 1937 to Diagram G39 and its number was No. 41989. An update to the design included ‘I’ beam girders rather than rolled beams and end-axle guard plates. No. 41990 (DW41990 under BR) was the second Loriot Y wagon to be constructed in 1939. The wagon conveyed excavators and other plant machinery over the GWR network. During the Second World War, the two wagons were used constantly to transport bulldozers for when there was wartime bombing. The ‘Loriot Y’ wagon model represents the prototypical wagon under BR ownership. The running number, DW41990, is emblazoned on the side. A wood grain print is used to replicate the wooden planks seen on the prototypical model. The model’s load is a BR Coles Crane, made by CORGI®.

Rannoch railway station opened in 1894 and serves the local community of Rannoch in the Perth and Kinross area of Scotland. The station is typical of many on the West Highland Railway in been designed as an island platform and having yard facilities to one side of the station site. The original signal box, opened in 1894 is still sited on the Platform, although now no longer in use. The signal box provides visitor information on signalling with original Levers still in situ. The Peco kit can be built to represent the Signal box in as built condition or other stages of its life up to today. The station plays host to all manner of trains including Caledonian Sleeper and Scot Rail services enroute to Fort William where they connect with the famous Fort William and Mallaig trains.

Peco GWR Wooden Station Building (OO)

GWR Wooden Station Building (Based on Monkton Combe) Monkton Combe, once an intermediate station on the long-closed Camerton branch near Bath, was thrust into the limelight in 1952 when it was chosen to be the location for the filming of the famous Ealing Comedy "The Titfield Thunderbolt".  This kit has created a faithful reproduction of the building as it was during its short life as a passenger station. Built in 1910, it closed to passengers entirely in 1925, the branch lingering on for goods-only until 1951. Despite its very short life the building was an attractive one and a similar style has been used at other locations around the GWR system, South Wales coming to mind.  No doubt modellers will happily justify their own rendition of Monkton Combe on their layouts. And with the prospect of locos and rolling stock models becoming available soon, based on those used in the film, we may even see recreations of Titfield station itself! To give inspiration to modellers the June 2023 issue of the Railway Modeller shows you just how to create Titfield using our kit, thanks to the modelling skills of resident features writer and modeller Callum Willcox. Hornby Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery

Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport. Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives. Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
