GCR 9J 295 GCR Lined Black (Sound Fitted) The Great Central Railway was a big mover of goods and amongst the locomotives it built for this purpose were the 9J 0-6-0s. Nicknamed ‘Pom Poms’ because their exhaust noise sounded very similar to the guns of the same name, these freight workhorses are replicated in OO scale by Bachmann Branchline. The 9Js carried all the hallmarks of a locomotive designed by the GCR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G. Robinson and these features are replicated on the Branchline model using a precision moulded boiler, smokebox and firebox mounted on a diecast metal running plate. The distinctive Robinson cab is another high-fidelity moulding, within which boiler backhead is replicated using an array of separately fitted pipework, controls and dials, all of which are enhanced further with bespoke decoration. The GCR tender has a distinctive look too with its high capacity and flared top edges, and again these trademark features are captured in miniature using high-fidelity mouldings. Coupling to the locomotive via a drawbar that is adjustable to suit individual layout conditions, electrical connections are integrated into it and a hinged fallplate is also fitted to the tender. Across the model separate components are added, from the metal handrails and sprung metal buffers, to the lamp irons at the front and rear, to complete the look of this freight machine. Built by British Railways in the months following Nationalisation, these BCKs were used as ‘loose’ coaches to strengthen services at peak times or were included in trains from which they would be detached part way through a journey. The Atlantic Coast Express is a prime example of the latter, whereby as many as six BCKs heading for alternative destinations might be coupled to the main set upon departure from London Waterloo, and then progressively removed during the journey to then be hauled as part of a local or branch service, or simply as a single coach, to their final destination. Produced to the same high level of detail and fidelity as the current Bullied Coaches from Bachmann Branchline, these new models capture every element of Bulleid’s modernistic design to a tee. GWR 94XX Pannier Tank 9463 BR Black (Late Crest) The 94xx Pannier Tank returns to the Bachmann Branchline range and with its unconventional appearance – with large water tanks and extended smokebox – this model will bring a real presence to any model railway. A quintessential part of the GWR for many decades, the Pannier Tank design was developed and refined before the 94xx, the final design of GWR tank engine, was produced. No. 9466, as depicted by this model, one of only two preserved examples, found fame after returning to steam in the mid-1980s and operated on the mainline hauling ‘Steam on the Met’ rail tours.
