Loose-coupled wagons only had hand-operated ‘sprag’ brakes which had to be applied individually, for example, before descending a gradient.  Trains were prone to broken coupling chains, so the brake van was essential for bringing a train to a halt under such circumstances. From 1968, the requirement for a brake van to be coupled to a fitted train (wagons with vacuum brakes) was removed from the rule book. Railroad: BR Class 91 91018 'Robert Louis Stevenson' Intercity (Sound Fitted)  A total of 31 Class 91s were built between 1988 and 1991 for high-speed express passenger train haulage as part of the East Coast electrification programme of the late 1980s. Also known as InterCity 225s in anticipation of their service speed of 225km/h (140mph), they were also referred to as ‘Electras’ by BR during their development phase.  No. 91018 was built at BREL Crewe and entered service in 1990. It received the name ‘Robert Louis Stevenson’ in November 1993, and this was changed to ‘Bradford Film Festival’ in February 2000. It was modified to Class 91/1 in 2002 and renumbered 91118, and remained in service until withdrawn by LNER in May 2020, before going into storage. Railroad: BR Class 47 47749 'Atlantic Collage' RES This OO gauge model locomotive represents a Class 47 example that emerged from Crewe Works in February 1965 as D1660.  It was allocated to Swansea’s Landore MPD, before being named ‘City of Truro’ at Truro station in June that year. It became 47076 under TOPs, then was reclassified as a 47/4 in November 1984, when it became 47625. In the 1990s, it became part of the RES pool for operating mail and parcels trains and, in November 1995, was modified to 47/7b, with longer-range fuel tanks and equipment for operating with a propelling control vehicle (PCV). Hornby Railroad: BR Class 37 37422 'Pegasus' Swietelsky (Sound Fitted)

Railroad: BR Class 37 37422 'Pegasus' Swietelsky Rail Services (Sound Fitted)  Originally new from Vulcan Foundry in February 1965 as D6966, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on became 37266 under the TOPS numbering system in 1974.  Its career started at Tinsley, Sheffield and it also had postings at Stratford and Landore under BR. In January 1986 it was reclassified to 37/4 and renumbered 37422. The locomotive has worn several liveries and had several different operators, including EWS, DB Schenker, and DRS. It became part of the Harry Needle Railroad Company spot hire fleet based at Barrow Hill, which was taken over by Swietelsky, an Austrian-based railway construction and maintenance contractor, in January 2025. Railroad: GWR County 1013 'County of Dorset' BR Lined Green  The ‘County’ Class was the last of the GWR-designed two-cylinder 4-6-0s, with 30 built at Swindon between 1945 and 1947 to the design of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Frederick Hawksworth.  ‘County of Dorset’ entered service in February 1946 and spent most of its early years in the West Country at Bristol, Plymouth, Truro and Penzance, before transferring to Shrewsbury in December 1951. Hornby Railroad: BR Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' BR Lined Green

Railroad: BR Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' BR Lined Green Built as the replacement for ‘Princess Royal’ Class 4-6-2 46202 ‘Princess Anne’, which was destroyed in the Harrow and Wealdstone rail disaster of 1952, the Riddles-designed ‘Pacific’ was intended as the first of a new batch of modern locomotives that would serve BR for many years to come.  Completed at Crewe in 1954, plans to build more were turned down by the Railway Executive because the design was too expensive and complex. As a result, ‘Duke of Gloucester’ remained unique, with its three-cylinder configuration and Caprotti rotary cam-driven valve gear. It had an operational life of just eight years, being withdrawn in 1962. One of its cylinders was saved for display in the National Railway Museum, while the other was removed to balance the locomotive before going for scrap in South Wales.  It was, however, saved in 1974 and a restoration lasting 13 years ensued, including building new cylinders from scratch. LNER 'West Riding Limited' Double Open First Pack Following the success of the LNER’s newly-introduced ‘Coronation’ trains in 1935, a new train was introduced to operate between London King’s Cross and Leeds and Bradford in 1937. A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality. The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley's ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier. Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station. The next vehicles in the rake are coaches ‘C’ and ‘D’ and these comprise of two identical first class open coaches which offered enhanced comfort and also had a lavatory at each end. BR Class 10 10119 'Margaret Ethel-Thomas Alfred Naylor' BR Blue (GCR Preserved)  This BR Class 10 is a stunning example of a non-standard locomotive, beautifully displayed in OO gauge model form. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this blue diesel locomotive is a highly detailled design for your model railway collection.  The BR Class 10 was a variation on the standard BR Class 08 shunter, fitted with Blackstone engines and GEC traction motors. Built at Darlington and Doncaster, 146 were produced between 1955 and 1962, but due to their non-standard nature, they were withdrawn early, between February 1967 and June 1972.  Built as D4067 in 1961 at Darlington, this locomotive initially worked at Darnall, Sheffield, followed by Langwith Junction and Shirebrook. Withdrawn in 1970, it was sold to the NCB and used at Betteshanger Colliery in Kent. BR Class 56 56047 Dutch Transrail (TXS Sound Fitted) This Transrail Class 56 OO gauge model locomotive features a striking grey and yellow livery, with sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings. The highly detailed model is also pre-fitted with HM7000 sound capability for the most authentic experience.  Built at Doncaster Works, 56047 entered service at Toton in July 1978. Transrail Freight was set up as a trainload freight operator based in St Blazey, Cornwall, formed in 1994 from part of BR’s Trainload Freight division during the privatisation of British Rail. During this period, it acquired a number of Class 56 locomotives, retaining the Dutch-style livery but with the addition of Transrail’s logo and markings.  Transrail was one of a number of main line companies to be bought in 1996 to form new freight operator, English Welsh & Scottish (EWS). No. 45473 was completed at Derby in May 1943, entering service as 5473 and spending much of its working life in Scotland, being part of Perth’s allocation at the time of Nationalisation in 1948 and finishing its career at Dundee Tay Bridge. From there, it was withdrawn in November 1966 and subsequently scrapped at W.H. Arnott, Young at Co. Ltd, Carmyle, Glasgow the following February. Stanier 5MT 'Black 5' 45055 BR Lined Black (Early)  Completed in November 1935, this ‘Black Five’ was built at Vulcan Foundry, near Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire.  It spent most of its working career in north-west England and North Wales, though in 1966 it had brief allocations at West Hartlepool and York, before moving back to the Liverpool area and serving at Bank Hall and then Aintree. It almost lasted to the end of steam, withdrawal coming a month shy on 6th July 1968 from Lostock Hall, Preston, with scrapping the following February.  This OO gauge locomotive model features sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, and can be upgraded to HM7000 control with a 21-pin decoder (sold separately). Hornby SECR H Class 161 SECR Green

SECR H Class 161 SECR Green This OO gauge SECR H Class locomotive model is a faithful representation of Harry Wainwright's H Class. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this model is DCC ready with an 8-pin socket ready for upgrading to digital control.  Designed by Harry Wainwright, 66 of these locomotives were built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway at its Ashford Works between 1904 and 1915 for London suburban and semi-fast trains. Completed in June 1909, 161 engines carried the elaborate SECR livery, like the locomotive depicted by the model, until receiving a lined olive green livery when taken into SR stock and renumbered 1161 at the Grouping in 1923.  It later became BR 31161 and was withdrawn at Tunbridge Wells West in November 1961 after a creditable 51 years and 5 months’ service - DCC Ready 6-Pin Socket - OO Scale

LNER A4 4468 'Mallard' LNER Garter Blue (Sound/Smoke Fitted) One of the most famous of all steam locomotives, ‘Mallard’ still holds the world speed record for steam. In July 1938, it reached 126mph on Stoke Bank. Entering service in March of that year in LNER Garter blue, it had full side valances and red wheels, as depicted by our highly detailed model. It was renumbered 22 in 1946, by which time it carried wartime plain black. When it was withdrawn from King’s Cross in April 1963, it was in lined BR green and numbered 60022. The locomotive is preserved in its original livery at the National Railway Museum in York. 'Mallard' has always been one of our most popular models. In 2026, we have given the A4 a tooling update and the model now includes the new Hornby steam generator technology, working headlights and tender lights. LNER B12 61516 BR Lined Black (Late)  A shining replica of the BR B12 Class, this OO gauge model is highly detailed, with sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings. Upgrade to HM7000 with a 21-pin decoder (sold seperately).  Stephen D Holden designed the ‘S69’ inside cylinder 4-6-0s for the Great Eastern Railway. First introduced in 1911, it was the last of 71 built before the Grouping appeared in 1921. However, a further ten were constructed by Beyer, Peacock for the LNER in 1928, by which time they had been designated the ‘B12’ Class.  Built at Stratford Works in 1913, 1516 entered traffic on GER expresses out of London’s Liverpool Street station in the November. In 1924, it was renumbered 8516, then 1516 under the LNER’s 1947 renumbering scheme. GWR Castle Class 5071 'Spitfire' BR Lined Green (Early)  This locomotive entered service with the GWR at Newton Abbot in June 1938, initially named ‘Clifford Castle’, but this was changed to 'Spitfire' during the Second World War following the aeroplane’s pivotal role in the Battle of Britain during 1940.  It then spent most of its career shedded in the West Country, though after nationalisation, it had spells in the late 1950s at Gloucester and Worcester. The locomotive was fitted with a double chimney and four-row superheater in June 1959, before moving to St. Philip’s Marsh, Plymouth in February 1962, from where it was withdrawn in October 1963.  This detailed OO gauge model depicts 5071 in its original form, with a smart green livery. GWR Large Prairie 61xx Class 6126 British Railways Green A lovely addition to any OO gauge layout, this BR Class 61XX Large Prairie Locomotive is gorgeous in green. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this is a deligtful, highly detailed steam locomotive.  The ‘61XX’ Class was a direct development of the earlier ‘5101’ Class by Charles Collett, with a total of 70 locomotives turned out at Swindon Works between 1931 and 1935. The main difference was an increase in boiler pressure, which was raised to 225psi and gave a consequent increase in tractive effort.  No. 6126 entered service in October 1931 and spent much of its career based along the main Paddington to Bristol line, with postings at Slough, Southall, Reading, and Didcot. New to March in Cambridgeshire in November 1954, 92031 was one of 251 ‘standard’ heavy freight locomotives built to the design of Robert Riddles between January 1954 and March 1960. Its working career took it to allocations at New England (Peterborough), Annesley, Westhouses and Newton Heath, Manchester, from where it was withdrawn in January 1967 after an incredibly short working life of just 12 years and almost two months. LMS Patriot Class 5514 'Holyhead' LMS Lined Black This Hornby model of LMS ‘Patriot’ Class 4-6-0 No. 5514 ‘Holyhead’ is finished in accurate period detail as it appeared in the late 1930s. Designed for reliable performance on OO gauge layouts, the locomotive is DCC ready with a 21-pin decoder socket and if fitted with Metal sprung buffers and NEM tension lock couplers. History: Henry Fowler designed the ‘Patriot’ 4-6-0 for the LMS as an upgrade of the LNWR’s ‘Large Claughton’ Class for express passenger work. Built at both Crewe and Derby Works, 42 and ten respectively, 52 entered service between 1930 and 1934. ‘Holyhead’ was new from Crewe in September 1932, numbered 5983, but this was changed to 5514 in August 1938, as represented by the model.  The locomotive would later be rebuilt with a Stanier taper boiler in 1947, before becoming BR 45514, with withdrawal coming at Derby in May 1961, the first of the rebuilt ‘Patriots’ to be condemned. - OO Scale

SR, Merchant Navy 21C1 'Channel Packet' (TXS Steam Generator) Locomotive 21C1 'Channel Packet' was the first of the Merchant Navy class, entering service in 1941 at Salisbury and then Exmouth Junction from 1942. Renumbered '35001' under British Railways in 1948, 'Channel Packet' was allocated to Stewarts Lane from 1957 until rebuilding in 1959. Ltd of York, being delivered in April 1960 to join R&H 421419/1958 and 432479/1959 in the confectionery company's fleet of locomotives as No. 3. In 1979, the York factory bought a new 0-6-0 locomotive and No.3 was transferred to Rowntree's Fawdon factory in Newcastle. Rail services at Fawdon came to a halt on 30 January 1987, with No. 3 being handed over to the North York Moors Railway for preservation. After some years being moved about it was purchased in 2013 by two members of the Derwent Valley Light Railway, Glynnis and Tony Frith. 441934 has now been named Ken Cooke, in honour of the former Rowntree's York employee, D-Day veteran and holder of France's highest military honour, the Legion dHonneur. Ruston & Hornsby Ltd, of Lincoln, was formed as the result of the merger between Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd and Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd on September 11, 1918 and their first narrow gauge diesel locomotive left the works on September 1, 1931. In the summer of 1932, production was moved to the larger Boultham Works, where the firm were eventually to become Britain's largest builder of diesel locomotives, with over 6,500 being built by the time production ceased in 1969. Almost as soon as the firm's 44/48HP 0-4-0 locomotives were making an appearance, an upgraded, more powerful 0-4-0 was on the drawing board. Although many of the features of the 44/48HP were retained for the new 80/88HP, such as the chain drive and running gear, a new type of transmission was fitted, along with Westinghouse airbrakes. The new power unit, Ruston's own 4VPB, delivered 80BHP at 1000rpm and was later supplanted by Ruston's improved 4VPH that delivered 88BHP, but it required compressed air to be injected into the cylinders to be able to start. While running, an air reservoir was kept charged via the braking system, but after standing idle for a period the reservoir depleted and a secondary source was required to recharge the reservoir. This was achieved by fitting a small, secondary 1½HP 'donkey' engine, giving rise to a distinctive raised cover on the right hand side of the engine compartment that differed in size and placement depending on the make of engine used. Two basic weight options were offered for the 80/88HP, of 17 tons and 20 tons, the difference being achieved by attaching weights to the outside frames, as well as to the front and rear buffer beams. In 1941, Ruston's locomotive classifications were changed, with the 80/88HP becoming 88DS (with the narrow gauge versions being assigned the DSM and DSN suffix, and the broader gauges assigned DSW). Outward appearance changes to the 'standard' locomotives were mainly confined to the cab area, with examples from mid-1947 replacing the open cab with a fully enclosed cab that featured several ad-hoc styles of front window. The final 88DS, 518494, left Boultham Works on 29 November 1967, bringing to an end a production run of 271 locomotives.
