LMS 10001 BR Lined Green (Late Crest) (Sound Fitted) The LMS ‘Twins’ – Nos. 10000 and 10001 – were the very first mainline diesel locomotives built in the UK and this Bachmann Branchline model pays homage to the youngest of the pair, 10001. Built by the LMS and so becoming part of the Midland Region’s fleet under BR, after five years in traffic the ‘Twins’ were sent to the Southern Region (SR) between 1953 and 1955 for trails alongside the SR’s own prototype diesels. To work on the SR, additional headcode lights and brackets were fitted to suit the Southern 6 position headcode system and these remained a feature of both locomotives thereafter, as displayed on this model of No. 10001 which is depicted in BR Green livery and with the late crests that were applied by BR from 1956. By this time the pair had returned to the Midland Region and were employed on duties across the region. The Bachmann Branchline model of No. 10001 is a highly detailed replica of the prototype, adorned with numerous separately fitted components to accurately capture the appearance of this pioneering machine. Countless separate detailing parts are then added like the metal handrails, turned brass safety valves, lamp irons and lubricators. Sprung metal buffers are fitted to both bufferbeams. The locomotive’s diecast chassis is enhanced with brake blocks, brake rigging and sandboxes with separate wire sandpipes, whilst between the frames a representation of the inside motion is present. This attention to detail extends to the tender, while the tender drawbar is adjustable to suit individual layout conditions and electrical connections are incorporated into the drawbar. GCR 9J 295 GCR Lined Black (Sound Fitted) The Great Central Railway was a big mover of goods and amongst the locomotives it built for this purpose were the 9J 0-6-0s. Nicknamed ‘Pom Poms’ because their exhaust noise sounded very similar to the guns of the same name, these freight workhorses are replicated in OO scale by Bachmann Branchline. The 9Js carried all the hallmarks of a locomotive designed by the GCR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G. Robinson and these features are replicated on the Branchline model using a precision moulded boiler, smokebox and firebox mounted on a diecast metal running plate. GWR 94XX Pannier Tank 9463 BR Black (Late Crest) The 94xx Pannier Tank returns to the Bachmann Branchline range and with its unconventional appearance – with large water tanks and extended smokebox – this model will bring a real presence to any model railway. A quintessential part of the GWR for many decades, the Pannier Tank design was developed and refined before the 94xx, the final design of GWR tank engine, was produced. No. 9466, as depicted by this model, one of only two preserved examples, found fame after returning to steam in the mid-1980s and operated on the mainline hauling ‘Steam on the Met’ rail tours. Look inside the cab and a full complement of controls and dials is present, all decorated accordingly, which is only added to by the firebox lighting system which adds a further dimension of realism to every model. Technically the 94xx shines as well, with a Next18 DCC decoder socket paired with an integrated speaker making SOUND FITTED models an option if you wish to enjoy sound effects when operating your model railway. The story was inspired by the group of enthusiasts, led by Tom Rolt, who took over the 2ft 3in gauge Talyllyn Railway in 1951 and thus kick-started the railway preservation movement.
