GCR 9J (J11) 64305 BR Black (Early Emblem) The Great Central Railway was a big mover of goods and amongst the locomotives it built for this purpose were the 9J 0-6-0s. Upon becoming part of the LNER in 1924 the 9Js were reclassified as J11s and this designation stayed remained into British Railways life and until withdrawal. Nicknamed ‘Pom Poms’ because their exhaust noise sounded very similar to the guns of the same name, these freight workhorses are replicated in OO scale by Bachmann Branchline. The J11s carried all the hallmarks of a locomotive designed by the GCR’s Chief Mechanical Engineer John G. Robinson and these features are replicated on the Branchline model using a precision moulded boiler, smokebox and firebox mounted on a diecast metal running plate. The distinctive Robinson cab is another high-fidelity moulding, within which boiler backhead is replicated using an array of separately fitted pipework, controls and dials, all of which are enhanced further with bespoke decoration. The GCR tender has a distinctive look too with its high capacity and flared top edges, and again these trademark features are captured in miniature using high-fidelity mouldings. Coupling to the locomotive via a drawbar that is adjustable to suit individual layout conditions, electrical connections are integrated into it and a hinged fallplate is also fitted to the tender. Across the model separate components are added, from the metal handrails and sprung metal buffers, to the lamp irons at the front and rear, to complete the look of this freight machine. The locomotive’s diecast chassis is enhanced with brake blocks, brake rigging and sandboxes with separate wire sandpipes, whilst between the frames a representation of the inside motion is present. The black colour scheme is replicated with the usual care and attention that you expect from Bachmann Branchline, resulting in a paint finish that is rich and consistent throughout. It was then sold by to Angel Trains, who leased it to DB Schenker Rail UK, but the locomotive remained in service in France, returning to the UK for heavy maintenance when required via the Channel Tunnel. Railroad: BR Class 37 37422 'Pegasus' Swietelsky Rail Services (Sound Fitted)  Originally new from Vulcan Foundry in February 1965 as D6966, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on became 37266 under the TOPS numbering system in 1974.  Its career started at Tinsley, Sheffield and it also had postings at Stratford and Landore under BR. In January 1986 it was reclassified to 37/4 and renumbered 37422. The locomotive has worn several liveries and had several different operators, including EWS, DB Schenker, and DRS. It became part of the Harry Needle Railroad Company spot hire fleet based at Barrow Hill, which was taken over by Swietelsky, an Austrian-based railway construction and maintenance contractor, in January 2025. Railroad: Class 395 395005 Southeastern High Speed Train Pack Known as ‘Javelins’, these Class 395 trains are dual-voltage EMUs built as part of the Hitachi ‘AT300’ family for high-speed commuter services operated by Southeastern.  Introduced from June 2009, they are typically formed of six cars, though they can quickly be coupled together to form 12-cars when required. Based at Ashford and Ramsgate, there are currently 29 six-car sets in service. This unlikely reunion occurred almost 9,000 miles from where a week-long locomotive exchange once took place between the LNER and GWR, in April 1925.  This LNER and GWR Train Pack celebrates that landmark event in Australia 37 years ago in 1989. This Collection marks 150 years since Sir Stanier's birth, and this locomotive includes a figure. The ‘Princess Coronation’ Class, also known as the ‘Duchess’ Class, was an enlarged and improved version of William Stanier’s successful ‘Princess Royal’ Class ‘Pacific’. The first ten class members emerged from Crewe Works in a streamlined form during 1937 and five of these were put aside specifically for hauling the prestigious ‘Coronation Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow Central. These were painted in Caledonian blue and had silver horizontal lining, which matched the carriages they pulled. No. 6220 set a new British steam speed record of 114mph in 1937, but this was beaten by the LNER’s ‘Mallard’ in 1938. Built with a single chimney, 6220 was the last of the original 15 to be fitted with a double blast pipe and chimney in 1944. SECR H Class 161 SECR Green This OO gauge SECR H Class locomotive model is a faithful representation of Harry Wainwright's H Class. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this model is DCC ready with an 8-pin socket ready for upgrading to digital control.  Designed by Harry Wainwright, 66 of these locomotives were built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway at its Ashford Works between 1904 and 1915 for London suburban and semi-fast trains. GWR Castle Class 5071 'Spitfire' BR Lined Green (Early)  This locomotive entered service with the GWR at Newton Abbot in June 1938, initially named ‘Clifford Castle’, but this was changed to 'Spitfire' during the Second World War following the aeroplane’s pivotal role in the Battle of Britain during 1940.  It then spent most of its career shedded in the West Country, though after nationalisation, it had spells in the late 1950s at Gloucester and Worcester. The locomotive was fitted with a double chimney and four-row superheater in June 1959, before moving to St. Philip’s Marsh, Plymouth in February 1962, from where it was withdrawn in October 1963.  This detailed OO gauge model depicts 5071 in its original form, with a smart green livery. The main difference was an increase in boiler pressure, which was raised to 225psi and gave a consequent increase in tractive effort.  No. 6126 entered service in October 1931 and spent much of its career based along the main Paddington to Bristol line, with postings at Slough, Southall, Reading, and Didcot. Its working career took it to allocations at New England (Peterborough), Annesley, Westhouses and Newton Heath, Manchester, from where it was withdrawn in January 1967 after an incredibly short working life of just 12 years and almost two months. Class 150/1 2-Car DMU 150101 Northern The Class 150 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is an enduring design, first introduced in 1984 much of the fleet remains in service today with operators including Northern Trains. The distinctive blue and white livery of Northern makes a return to the Branchline Class 150 DMU, this time on a Class 150/1 as classmate 150101. Constructed from a highly detailed bodyshell which is adorned with separate components like the cab front handrails, roof ariels and exhaust, the Branchline model replicates the Class 150/1 faithfully. Railroad: Class 37 37093 Police BR 125 Advert (Sound Fitted) Recognised for its memorable role in a television advert – flagging down a speeding HST power car, this highly detailed model of Class 37 No. 37093 comes presented in its unique ‘Police’ promotional livery. Complete with a roof-mounted working blue light and DCC sound-fitted with Class 37 and effects, functions, and an authentic police siren straight out of the box. Equipped with NEM tension lock couplings and plastic buffers, this Co-Co diesel is built to perform on second radius curves or greater. History: Built at English Electric’s Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns works, this locomotive entered BR service as D6793 in 1963, allocated to Gateshead. History: Released into BR traffic from Vulcan Foundry as D6971 on 18 March 1965, this locomotive was first allocated to Cardiff Canton. It received its unusual name ‘An Commun Gaidhealach’ (The Gaelic Association) at Edinburgh in October 1986, before entering the Provincial General Pool from January 1989.  It was renamed ‘Pectindae’ in April 1992, and then ‘East Lancashire Railway’ in April 1994, eventually being sold to a private owner in 2007 by EWS. BR Class 153 153360 Serco Northern Rail The Hornby Class 153 No. 153360 is finished in the distinctive Northern Rail livery, representing its appearance during regular service in the north of England. History: The Northern Rail franchise commenced in December 2004 and inherited its fleet from those of Arriva Trains Northern and First North Western, including a large number of Class 153 single units, of which No. 153360 was one.  Under Northern Rail, the unit saw considerable use in the Carlisle area, including services on the Settle and Carlisle line and the Cumbria coastal line to Barrow-in-Furness.  Arriva Rail North, Northern Rail’s successor from 2016, operated the largest fleet of Class 153 units in the UK. GWR Saint Class 2920 'Saint David' BR Lined Black (Early) Of the 77 Saint Class members built by GWR between 1902 and 1913, 2920 ‘Saint David’ was one of the 47 that survived beyond nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948. Part of the third batch of 20 to be built in 1907, the locomotive was new to Cardiff Canton shed. It underwent several changes during its career, including the fitting of a superheated boiler in 1909 and outside steam pipes in December 1932. This model is presented in BR livery, the condition in which it operated through to its withdrawal in October 1953, by which point it was one of the last four still in service. This model was developed with the helpful guidance from the Didcot Railway Center who kindly gave us access to their archive of drawings and access to the Lady of Legend locomotive. The Saint class model features a powerful 5 pole skew wound motor, flickering firebox and is designed to be fully compatible with the HM7000 21-Pin decoder for full DCC and sound control. The Branchline model combines the trolley car, with its open cabin and seating for several personnel, with a trailer and it is here that the motor and mechanism is located, cleverly concealed by a ballast/spoil load. The trailer also sports a diecast metal chassis, with separate metal bearings fitted to the two axles and the gearing from the coreless motor to the driving axle is housed in a diecast metal gearbox. The driven wheelset is also fitted with traction tyres for assured running from this diminutive model. The semi-permanent coupling between the trolley and trailer allows electrical connections to be carried between the two, so that all eight wheels of the model can be equipped with pickups. With its wheels on full show, it’s easy to see that these have been replicated faithfully with the correct pattern and profile and brakes are added separately too. Meanwhile the trolley car itself has glazed windscreens with a separate windscreen wiper, headlights at the front and rear (non-functional), and a representation of the sheeting (that would have supposedly provided riders with protection from inclement weather!) rolled up and stowed along the roof edge. The real WD9033 arrived at the Longmoor Military Railway (LMR) in Hampshire in 1954, later finding fame in the 1960s film ‘The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery’ before it moved away from the LMR in 1970 and more recently the trolley has been preserved. The real loco debuted in its striking black livery at the end of April 2025, complete with Andy’s Man Club branding and contact details along with the hashtag #itsoktotalk. Bachmann will be donating proceeds from every sale of this model and with it being the 13th member of the Class 69 fleet, we aim to raise £13,000 to help Andy’s Man Club get men talking all over the UK. No. 69013 is the first model to be unveiled for the second batch of Branchline Class 69s which will be released in 2026. The real locomotive is unique amongst the 16-strong fleet of converted Class 56s in having the lower portions of its cab sheeting removed. This modification was made to the donor locomotive No. 56312 and has been carried over to No. 69013 but is not present on the other 15 locomotives. Every Branchline model is manufactured using complex and expensive tooling suites and producing a model with this unique feature is not possible using the current tooling that Bachmann has developed. LNER Azuma Class 801/2 801207 'Darlington' Train Pack (Rail200) The ‘Azuma’ Class 801/1 and 801/2 sets, were introduced on the East Coast Main Line between 2017 and 2020. They are a development of the Class 800 bi-mode trains in the Hitachi AT300 product range, produced at their Newton Aycliffe facility in the north-east, but unlike their bi-mode counterparts, the Class 801s are the purely electric version of the ‘Azuma’, although they are fitted with ‘emergency’ diesel engines to allow them to limp home in case of overhead power failure.  The Class 801/2s are the full nine-car length trains, whereas the 801/1s operate as shorter five-car sets, often used in pairs. The first of the full-length Class 801/2s ran in November 2019, entering service on front-line London King’s Cross-Edinburgh trains, allowing the bi-mode Class 800/1s to be cascaded onto King’s Cross-Aberdeen services, which in turn replaced the remaining InterCity 125 sets on that route. There are currently 30 Class 801/2 sets in operation. Five of which are named, including Set No. 801207, which on 14 January was unveiled by LNER to mark the 200th Anniversary year of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.  The power cars carry LNER, ‘Azuma’ and ‘Railway 200’ markings, with the legend ‘Darlington’ towards their front ends. LSWR Adams T3 560 SR Lined Maunsell Green The first LSWR T3 Class locomotive was built in 1892 and 125 years later, the T3 was thrown into the spotlight when the National Railway Museum donated the sole preserved example, No. 563, to the Swanage Railway Trust. Ever since this controversial move there has been a desire to see a OO scale model of this Victorian masterpiece, and now, we are delighted to fulfil those wishes with this brand-new model developed for Bachmann’s EFE Rail range. Employing a large number of diecast metal components to provide the optimal weight distribution needed for this 4-4-0 locomotive to perform at its best, the EFE Rail T3 is powered by a five pole motor and flywheel which is geared to the rear driving axle. DCC provision comes in the form of a Next18 decoder socket mounted in the tender, where a speaker is also fitted, meanwhile within the cab of the model a firebox lighting system has been installed which operates on both analogue and DCC. Birth of the Railways Train Pack (Railway 200) Representing the formative years of steam-powered railways, these three locomotives were built between 1825 and 1838. The first is ‘Locomotion No. 1’, designed by George and Robert Stephenson. It was built at their factory in Newcastle for the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, where it became the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train on a public railway. In doing so, it became the first steam locomotive to both operate and haul a passenger-carrying train on a public railway in September 1825. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary. With the experience they gained, Robert Stephenson & Co. entered a design for the 1829 Rainhill Trials, held to find suitable motive power for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Their entry, ‘Rocket’, was the clear winner and formed the basis for future steam locomotive design on the L&MR, which opened the following year. By 1838, locomotive design had already moved on, and 0-4-2 No. 57 ‘Lion’, was one of a pair of ‘luggage’ locomotives built to a Stephenson patent by Todd, Kitson & Laird of Leeds, also for the L&MR. Please note: Locomotion No.1 comes fitted with a Next 18-pin socket, but due to the locomotive's size limitations, sadly it cannot take an HM7000 Next 18-pin decoder. Southern Rail, T9 302 This locomotive was completed at the London & South Western Railway’s Nine Elms Works in late December 1900. Of the 66 built, 35 of the T9 Class were completed at Nine Elms, with a further 31 examples built by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow. Nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’ as they consistently ran at speeds of up to 85mph, the last in service was No. 30120, which is preserved as part of the National Collection. Originally paired with a conventional six-wheel tender, it received an eight-wheel watercart version in July 1935. LMS Stanier 5MT Black 5 5047 Known as ‘Black Fives’, or in Scotland as ‘Hikers’, Stanier’s 5MT 4-6-0s were one of the most numerous classes of locomotives built in the UK, with 842 examples built at a variety of locations, including the railway’s own works at Crewe, Derby and Horwich, plus private builders Vulcan Foundry and Armstrong Whitworth, the latter building by far the most with 327 machines. No. 5047 was built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows in 1935 with a domeless boiler and spent most of its career in Scotland. BR (Early), Class T9 30338 Designed for express passenger work on the London & South Western Railway, 66 of these elegant 4-4-0s were built between 1899 and 1901. Built at the LSWR’s Nine Elms Works, No. 30338 entered service in October 1901 as No. 338 and lasted in service until withdrawn by British Railways in April 1961, having completed a respectable 59 years and six months. This locomotive was the last of the class to be built at Nine Elms and had a wider cab and revised splashers compared to earlier class members. BR (Early Emblem), Class 9F 92018 A total of 251 of these heavy-duty freight locomotives were built by BR between January 1954 and March 1960, with construction shared between its Works at Crewe and Swindon who built 198 and 53 of them respectively. No. 92018 went new from Crewe to Wellingborough in October 1954 and was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in April 1967, after a wastefully short career of just 12 years and five months in service. Hornby GBRf Class 67 Bo-Bo 67027 - Era 11

GBRf, Class 67, Bo-Bo, 67027 The Class 67s were constructed by Alstom Meinfesa in Valencia between 1999 and 2000 for EWS. No. 67027 ‘Charlotte’ was named ‘Rising Star’ in 2003. Various changes took place over the years. In 2007, the ownership of the locomotive was transferred to DB Cargo UK. In 2014, the locomotive adopted the DB Cargo UK red livery, changing from the previous EWS red & yellow livery.  Ownership was again transferred to Colas Rail in 2017. To reflect this, the livery was amended to Colas Rail yellow, orange and black at the Toton TMD. The locomotive name changed to ‘Charlotte’ in the same year. In 2022, ownership was transferred to GB Railfreight and repainted in a blue and yellow livery, although this didn't last long as GBRF Rejected the 2 Class 67s and they were returned back to Colas. Class 37 37414 Triple Grey Construction Sector The introduction of Class 156 ‘Super Sprinters’ on the West Highland from January 1989 and on the Far North/Kyle lines in the May triggered an exodus of Class 37/4s to freight work. By the end of that year, Laira, Motherwell and Tinsley had gained allocations, while Immingham and Thornaby both acquired three locos each in the middle of 1990, by which point half the sub class were south of the border. One of these was No. 37414, which was on china clay duties in Cornwall until transferred to the North Lincolnshire depot’s FABI pool that September. This loco, which retained its Western Region-style lamp irons at the No.2 end only, had been repainted in the Roundel triple grey scheme with Distribution decals in August 1989, but quickly swapped these for more appropriate Construction brandings after its move. Accurascale Class 37 37421 Colas

Class 37 37421 Colas Stored by EWS at Motherwell in March 2005 and sold for preservation at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway in 2009, No. 37421 was one of four Class 37s that was purchased by Colas Rail in 2013 for a return to the main line, along with Nos. 37116, 37175 and 37219. While the latter pair debuted for their new owner in the middle of 2014, it would be another year before No. 37421 would re-enter traffic along with BR green-liveried former Harry Needle Class 37/0 No. 37057/D6757, just in time to assist on the newly acquired Network Rail infrastructure monitoring contract. For the next four years, the Colas Class 37/4 was a solid performer on various test formations, until called to South Wales in May 2019 to provide power for Cardiff-Rhymney line commuter turns along with hired-in Nos. 37025 and 37418. This followed a fallow few months when the locomotive was under repair and eventually returned after a bogie swap with No. 37175. The Rhymney workings ended in March 2020 and it was back to test train work, mixed in with NR saloon duties with No. 975025 Caroline and the odd infrastructure duty. Cosmetically, towards the end of that same year it swapped its Colas ‘hard hat’ logos for new diamond stickers, although it has stubbornly retained its unique arrangement of single lamp irons on different sides of the locomotive at each end. Despite the increasing number of Colas HST power cars on the NR services, No. 37421 is still a regular atop PLPR (Plain Line Pattern Recognition) and UTU (Ultrasonic Testing Unit) formations and is expected to remain a key component of the operator’s fleet for several years to come. Class 37 37408 'Loch Rannoch' EWS Arguably the most popular of the Class 37/4s in the British Rail and early privatisation era, No. 37408 Loch Rannoch clinged obstinately to its large logo paint scheme – the last so adorned – until being called to Toton in mid-1998 for a repaint. Following a protracted overhaul, which included a new toughened centre window, it debuted in the revised maroon and gold of its owner EWS, sans-nameplates, in November and wasn’t reunited with its famous name until the following February. Over the next seven years, the former No. 37289 (built as D6989) was a regular performer on loco-hauled services around the country, particularly Birmingham/Crewe-Bangor/Holyhead, Cardiff-Fishguard/Rhymney and Crewe/Manchester, Leeds-Carlisle/Knaresborough and even in Scotland on the Fort William sleeper. It could also be found on a wide variety of freight and even Railtrack/Network Rail test trains and was variously allocated to Crewe Diesel, Motherwell, Cardiff Canton, Toton and Margam during this period.Outshopped in the same livery in March 2002, its rock star status meant that it was never long before it gained various accoutrements, including regular bouts of Eastfield ‘Westies’, silver buffers, white lamp irons, black headcode panels and even Immingham 40B shedplates. It seemed inevitable that Rannoch would return to large logo in due course and would have been a favourite for preservation, but after running away and colliding with its stabled rake of coaches at Rhymney on 1 August 2005 the locomotive was stored and repairs were not authorised. It was eventually scrapped at EMR Kingsbury in January 2008. Major modifications were required for the Class 43 power cars to make them compatible with the Mk3 coaches. These included changing the train supply from three-phase to 1,000V conventional ETS, fitting jumper connections, changing the central door locking system and more modifications to the couplings and electrical systems. Grand Central launched their new London King’s Cross to Sunderland passenger service on 18 December 2007. No. 43465 was outshopped from Crewe Works in October 1977 as 43065 in an InterCity Blue and Grey livery. The locomotive entered traffic straight after at Heaton. Not long after, it was repainted into an InterCity Swallow livery. In the late 1980s, 43065 was one of eight power cars fitted with buffers and TDM multiple working equipment to make sure it could work with brand new Class 91 electric locomotives using Mk3 rolling stock. Grand Central acquired 43065 and refurbished the locomotive at Brush Traction in 2010.  It faced a renumbering change to 43465 and acquired a new Grand Central black and orange striped livery. In 2017, the Grand Central Class 43 locomotives were purchased by East Midlands Trains with the last Grand Central HST service commencing on New Year’s Eve. By 2018, 43465 was painted in an East Midlands Trains blue livery with red and orange stripes. This livery was updated for the ex-Grand Central HSTs by featuring a deeper blue gradient. 43365 is currently in service as a Rail Adventure power car and was part of Rail Adventure’s first dive onto British rails, with the company previously only being based out of Germany. BR, W1 Class 'Hush Hush' Streamlined, 4-6-4, 60700 Includes: - British Railways branding in Gill Sans Font - Garter Blue livery - Accessory bag (drain cocks, pipes) - 2x extra trailing wheels for the Cartazzi truck (if your layout has sufficient curvature) - Accurate cab detail - Double Kylchap double blast-pipe arrangement - Streamlined Non corridor tender type - 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket - Era 5 - OO scale Locomotive information and history: Having completed nearly 90,000 miles of test running since new, Sir Nigel Gresley's W1 4-6-4 No. 10000 entered Darlington Works on 21 August 1935 for what was anticipated to be a major overhaul and modification. During this period Gresley decided that it was time to rebuild 10000 as a three cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler. Subsequently, 10000 was moved to the Doncaster Works on 13 October 1936 and this is where the first drawing for the modification were being prepared. When 10000 was finally released from Doncaster Works in November 1937, it was a significantly different locomotive, being fitted with a diagram 111 boiler that was very similar to the diagram 108 boiler fitted to No. 2006 'Wolf of Badenoch', and with a streamlined casing to the same pattern as the A4 class. As many components as possible from the original W1 were used in the rebuild, including the frames, which were shortened by 1 ½ feet at the front end. Other items, where needed, were sourced from the A4 class, the A3 class or, like the front bogie, from the B17 and an experimental double Kylchap blastpipe and chimney was fitted. The locomotive was turned out in Garter Blue as per some of the A4's (in 1937 this became a standard livery). The cab, while similar to that of the A4 class, 60700 was considerably longer and this led to the locomotive's tender's coal delivery chute having to be lengthened to compensate for the extra distance from the firebox doors. The original tender was retained, but with superficial modifications, such as to the curvature of the front plates and the addition of streamlined plating to the front and rear, although this was partially removed just a year later in 1938. Up to the outbreak of war in 1939 and during the war years, 10000 worked mainly on Kings Cross main line duties and with its power and smooth riding it was a popular engine with the LNER's drivers, though less so with the firemen due to the distance between the shovelling plate and the firehole door. The locomotive also became more 'fitter' friendly after April 1942 when the skirting was removed from ahead and behind the outside cylinders to improve access in wartime conditions. At this time the 10000 was painted in wartime Black livery and with only 'N E' on the tender sides. By 1946 and now repainted in Garter blue livery, the corridor tender was swapped for the streamlined non-corridor tender from 4462 (BR 60004) William Whitelaw and the locomotive was engaged in more varied duties, working occasional passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge from Kings Cross alongside the occasional 'lodging' turns to Newcastle. By 1948 under the new British Railways, the locomotive received the number 60700 and "British Railways" insignia on the tender in Gills Sans font. Following allocation to Doncaster on 25 October 1953, 60700 became a more frequent visitor to Leeds and also worked turns to Sheffield, as well as hauling Doncaster to Peterborough passenger services and various braked goods trains. In a similar circumstance to 10000 never receiving its proposed name of 'British Enterprise' in November 1929, 60700 never received its intended name of 'Pegasus', for which the nameplates were cast on 13 April 1951. At this time the locomotive lost its Garter Blue livery for the new "Express Passenger Blue" with white and black lining. After an interesting and slightly troubled life, the locomotive was scrapped at its Darlington birthplace in 1959. Interesting to note is that as 60700 was going into works for scrapping, the original marine boiler the locomotive was fitted with, had been perched on bricks as steam raising boiler outside the works and outlasted the locomotive by a few years.

Hornby BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 - Era 4

The Robert Riddles design was intended as a long distance heavy express freight locomotive. In total 251 of the class were produced between January 1954 and March 1960, with the final locomotive No. 92220 'Evening Star' being the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The huge length of the 10 coupled driving wheels proved problematic when faced with tight curves, a situation that freight haulage would make inevitable. A solution was found by removing the flanges from the centre driving wheel and reducing the size on the flanges on the second and fourth driving axle's wheels.  Riddles had chosen the 2-10-0 wheel configuration in-order to spread the load of the boiler over a greater area. This meant that the boiler had to be raised considerably compared to other designs to allow the firebox to sit above the trailing driving wheels. As a result, the 9F features a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate. In operation the class proved extremely versatile. Not only did the 9F excel as a freight locomotive, but when required it also succeeded as a passenger locomotive. Reports even suggest that when 92220 'Evening Star' was used to pull the Red Dragon express service between Cardiff and London it was forced to delay its arrival to allow the restaurant services to be completed, having outperformed the normal Britannia Class locomotives used on the service.  This was not the only time 9Fs had been recorded outperforming dedicated express locomotives and on such services the locomotives were capable of running at over 90mph. This combination of high speed, fast acceleration and powerful hauling capabilities mean that many consider the class to be pinnacle of British steam locomotive design. Locomotive numbers 92165-92167 were built with a mechanical stoker. This system used a helical screw to move coal from the tender straight into the firebox. This meant that coal could be burnt a faster rate than a fireman could maintain otherwise.  Systems like this proved extremely useful on long distance American railways however in Britain it was rare for a locomotive to require such as high rate of coal delivery over a long period of time meaning that a good fireman could prove just as effective. Locomotive 92002 was the third such locomotive to be constructed by BR, being built at Crewe in 1954. The locomotive was outshopped with the BR1G tender and in the usual BR black colour scheme. The locomotive would go on to be one of the 106 locomotives withdrawn in 1967, the locomotive would not be preserved.

As well as working shunting duties at Leeman Road, 432478 also worked at the York Central Concrete Depot, which is now the site of the Railway Museum's main visitor car park. Ruston & Hornsby Ltd, of Lincoln, was formed as the result of the merger between Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd and Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd on September 11, 1918 and their first narrow gauge diesel locomotive left the works on September 1, 1931. In the summer of 1932, production was moved to the larger Boultham Works, where the firm were eventually to become Britain's largest builder of diesel locomotives, with over 6,500 being built by the time production ceased in 1969. Almost as soon as the firm's 44/48HP 0-4-0 locomotives were making an appearance, an upgraded, more powerful 0-4-0 was on the drawing board. Although many of the features of the 44/48HP were retained for the new 80/88HP, such as the chain drive and running gear, a new type of transmission was fitted, along with Westinghouse airbrakes. The new power unit, Ruston's own 4VPB, delivered 80BHP at 1000rpm and was later supplanted by Ruston's improved 4VPH that delivered 88BHP, but it required compressed air to be injected into the cylinders to be able to start. While running, an air reservoir was kept charged via the braking system, but after standing idle for a period the reservoir depleted and a secondary source was required to recharge the reservoir. This was achieved by fitting a small, secondary 1½HP 'donkey' engine, giving rise to a distinctive raised cover on the right hand side of the engine compartment that differed in size and placement depending on the make of engine used. Two basic weight options were offered for the 80/88HP, of 17 tons and 20 tons, the difference being achieved by attaching weights to the outside frames, as well as to the front and rear buffer beams. In 1941, Ruston's locomotive classifications were changed, with the 80/88HP becoming 88DS (with the narrow gauge versions being assigned the DSM and DSN suffix, and the broader gauges assigned DSW). Outward appearance changes to the 'standard' locomotives were mainly confined to the cab area, with examples from mid-1947 replacing the open cab with a fully enclosed cab that featured several ad-hoc styles of front window. The final 88DS, 518494, left Boultham Works on 29 November 1967, bringing to an end a production run of 271 locomotives.

Since 1975 these powerful Bo-Bo locomotives have moved passengers across the country for business and for leisure, most ironically in their various BR guises. The Class 43 persists to this day as a stalwart of the rails under various operators including the mainline serving GWR, mainline maintaining Network Rail and some private operators such as Locomotive Services Limited on their Blue Pullman services.  This train pack, designed to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II depicts the Class 43 as they have never been seen before, in a livery questioning exactly how the legendary LNER would celebrate this special occasion if they were still operating, and nationalisation had never occurred. It would be nice to think that if the big four were never nationalised that we would still be able to see steam regularly on the mainline however this view is shrouded in nostalgia and ignores the operational benefits that diesel locomotives bring. If the LNER operated continuously into the modern era, this may be how they would mark this special occasion. The power cars in this set, while adorned with numbers that have been assigned to full size units, have had numbers chosen to celebrate prominent years of the queen’s reign. 43052 has been chosen as part of the numbering pattern for the full size examples and 52 for the year of the coronation, and 43022 follows the same pattern but for this very special year of Her Majesties reign.
