Historical information:
Screw link couplings were first introduced as onward development of 3 link couplings and bettering railway standards from the 1830s onwards. Unlike standard 3 link couplings, the centre link was replaced with a threaded bar and handle. The practice was that wagons/rolling stock buffering up would just have the buffers touching (not compressed), than the shunter would throw the coupling on and tighten the threaded bar with the handle). This would keep the buffers at the desired distance and stop any chance of slack and buffering effect on the train when accelerating or decelerating.
Most 'Non Passenger' Express rated goods trains and rolling stock had screw links fitted. The LNER used screw links as a standard on all vacuum fitted rolling stock. This is a practice that continued after WW2 and used on British Railway rolling stock.
