HM7000: Power Bank Maxi The R7416 Power Bank Maxi is our largest power bank and will keep locomotives with larger motors that require more pulling power, running over any potential dead spots. The space require inside a locomotive for this power bank is 22 x 12 x 10mm.  The Power Bank Maxi can be connected into the current range of HM7000 DCC Bluetooth decoders. A simple plug & play socket means there's no soldering required! Why use one? Your layout will occasionally suffer from dirty track or small electrical dead spots at points and crossings. The small loss of power can cause locomotives to stop, but with DCC Sound Decoders it can also cause the sounds to reset and restart. Avoid both issues by fitting a Power Bank. Perfect locomotive running and optimal control! (The Power Bank is not suitable for use without an HM7000 decoder, connecting it directly to other decoders or directly to the wiring of a model locomotive may cause damage to the Power Bank, your locomotive or your non-HM7000 decoder). Hornby LNER A1 4472 'Flying Scotsman' LNER Apple Green (TT)

TT3004M LNER Class A1 4-6-2 4472 'Flying Scotsman' The A1 is a locomotive that will always be tied to the names Sir Nigel Gresley and LNER, however only one of these was involved in the design and construction from the beginning. The A1 was originally a Great Northern Railway design, with number 1470 ‘Great Northern’ being one of only two examples to outshop into GNR service. These locomotives were powerful, and almost immediately served their purpose of comfortably outperforming the older ‘Atlantic’ locomotives that were being pushed to their limit between London and the North. These ‘Pacific’ locomotives did just that, and they would go on to become one of the most versatile locomotives in Britain. Upon amalgamation onto the LNER, some minor changes were made to the Class, but being a recent design at the time they were already close to the pinnacle of what could be achieved by any locomotive designer, let alone Sir Nigel Gresley. 4472 is a number that is engrained into the brain of every man who was once a little boy staring starry eyed and an Apple Green streak thundering though the countryside. ‘Flying Scotsman’ was built in 1923 as one of the A1 locomotives built under the LNER, it is the only member of the class to go on to be preserved. The trials and tribulations faced by Flying Scotsman in preservation have cemented its status as one of the most famous steam locomotives ever built. - TT:120 Scale

Railroad: Royal Mail Travelling Post Office 80331 The Traveling Post Office (TPO) has been a fixture on Britain’s railways since mail was first carried on trains in the 1830s.  The sorting of mail in transit gradually reduced in the 21st century as mechanised sorting at depots became commonplace and concerns about the safety of workers carrying out letter-sorting at increased main line speeds. The last TPO using carriages in the UK took place during the night of 9th January 2004. After that, a fleet of Royal Mail-branded Class 325 EMUs continued to carry parcels by rail, but these too ceased in 2024. TPOs could collect and deposit mail on the move by means of lineside apparatus. Several of these vehicles have survived in preservation. General Utility Vans (GUVs) were used in large numbers to transport mail and parcels, though some were used as newspaper vans.  These vehicles were part of the BR Mk1 coach family and 907 examples were built between 1956 and 1960 by BR at its York, Doncaster and Glasgow works. A number were also produced under contract by the Pressed Steel Company Ltd at Cowley, near Oxford. With a carrying capacity of 13.8 tons (14 tonnes) these multi-door bogie vans were versatile, some even being converted for carrying motor vehicles. The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST. Mk3 coaches continued to be built until 1988, but multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell were built until the early 1990s. The standard length of a Mk3 coach is 75ft (23m), which is ten feet longer than its predecessor, the Mk2, and is of monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin. GWR-liveried Mk3 coaches were formed into full-length HST sets and from 2019, in sets of four, to operate as GWR ‘Castle’ sets, which ran as such until May 2024. Hornby Tavern Coach Pack 'At the Sign of the Three Plovers'

BR Kitchen and Buttery Car & Composite Restaurant 'At the Sign of the Three Plovers' Coach Pack  This highly detailed OO gauge model coach pack represents one of eight pairs of vehicles introduced by BR in 1949 to provide catering facilities with a difference.  The idea came from Oliver Bulleid, the former Southern Railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer. This pair operated on the Eastern Region and consisted of a Composite Dining Car and a ‘Tavern Coach’. Internally, each ‘tavern’ was decorated to mimic an olde English pub, with tiled floor, whitewashed walls, ‘oak’ beams, high-backed settles and illuminated by ‘lanterns’. - OO Scale

BR Mk3 Virgin West Coast 4 Car Coach Pack  Includes: Trailer Standard 42176 Trailer Standard 42177 Trailer Standard 42105 Trailer First 41059 British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975 with improved standards of comfort in response to competition from airlines and increased use of private motor cars. Designed and built by BREL, they were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock, but with the development of the High Speed Train (HST), were soon adapted for use at speeds of up to 125mph (220km/h). The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST. Mk3 coaches continued to be built until 1988, but multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell were built until the early 1990s. The standard length of a Mk3 coach is 75ft (23m), which is ten feet longer than its predecessor, the Mk2, and is of monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin. Virgin operated several sets of these coaches for use with its HST power cars. Following introduction of its Pendolinos, most of Virgin’s Mk3 coaches moved on to other operators, though it did retain one set for peak time cover and had them refurbished at Doncaster and painted into the same livery as its Pendolino and Voyager trains. However, these too were stood-down in November 2014 when they were transferred to Abellio Greater Anglia. - OO Scale

Railroad: BR Class 60 60038 'Avesta Polarit' EWS (Sound Fitted) A growth in demand in the heavy haulage sector led to a review of BR’s available motive power in the 1980s. With 185 locomotives of the Type 5, 3,000+ horsepower category available, made up of its Classes 56 and 58, it was clear that more would be needed, and BR put out an invitation to tender for new locomotives in 1987.  The 100 locomotive order was awarded to Brush in Loughborough, and these entered service between 1989 and 1993. No.60038 was named ‘Bidean nam Bian’ after the Scottish ‘Munro’ in Glen Coe.  With BR’s trainload freight business broken up into shadow franchises, the locomotive became part of Loadhaul, based in the north-east. By 1996, this had become part of EWS and 60038 was named 'Avesta Polarit' after the steel making company at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19th March 2002. It became 47076 under TOPs, then was reclassified as a 47/4 in November 1984, when it became 47625. In the 1990s, it became part of the RES pool for operating mail and parcels trains and, in November 1995, was modified to 47/7b, with longer-range fuel tanks and equipment for operating with a propelling control vehicle (PCV). Railroad: BR Class 60 60038 'Avesta Polarit' EWS  A growth in demand in the heavy haulage sector led to a review of BR’s available motive power in the 1980s.  With 185 locomotives of the Type 5, 3,000+ horsepower category available, made up of its Classes 56 and 58, it was clear that more would be needed, and BR put out an invitation to tender for new locomotives in 1987. The 100 locomotive order was awarded to Brush in Loughborough, and these entered service between 1989 and 1993. No.60038 was named ‘Bidean nam Bian’ after the Scottish ‘Munro’ in Glen Coe.  With BR’s trainload freight business broken up into shadow franchises, the locomotive became part of Loadhaul, based in the north-east. By 1996, this had become part of EWS and 60038 was named 'Avesta Polarit' after the steel making company, at the DFDS Immingham sea terminal on 19th March 2002. It is now one of 14 owned by DC Rail and currently in store.  Our RailRoad model is an accurate replica of this Class 60 locomotive, with high detail and design features for enhanced durability. As the standard BR general-purpose diesel shunter, the type became a common sight at major stations and freight yards across the country.  The locomotive this example is based on started life as 13326 in November 1956, having been completed at Darlington, and was new to New England, Peterborough. It later served at Sheffield Darnall, Tinsley, Finsbury Park, Hitchin, Startford and finally, from May 1968 at Colchester, from where it was withdrawn in February 1984. Railroad: BR Class 37 37422 'Pegasus' Swietelsky Rail Services (Sound Fitted)  Originally new from Vulcan Foundry in February 1965 as D6966, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on became 37266 under the TOPS numbering system in 1974.  Its career started at Tinsley, Sheffield and it also had postings at Stratford and Landore under BR. In January 1986 it was reclassified to 37/4 and renumbered 37422. The locomotive has worn several liveries and had several different operators, including EWS, DB Schenker, and DRS. It became part of the Harry Needle Railroad Company spot hire fleet based at Barrow Hill, which was taken over by Swietelsky, an Austrian-based railway construction and maintenance contractor, in January 2025. Railroad: BR Class 8 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' BR Lined Green (Sound Fitted) Built as the replacement for ‘Princess Royal’ Class 4-6-2 46202 ‘Princess Anne’, which was destroyed in the Harrow and Wealdstone rail disaster of 1952, the Riddles-designed ‘Pacific’ was intended as the first of a new batch of modern locomotives that would serve BR for many years to come.  Completed at Crewe in 1954, plans to build more were turned down by the Railway Executive because the design was too expensive and complex. As a result, ‘Duke of Gloucester’ remained unique, with its three-cylinder configuration and Caprotti rotary cam-driven valve gear. It had an operational life of just eight years, being withdrawn in 1962.  One of its cylinders was saved for display in the National Railway Museum, while the other was removed to balance the locomotive before going for scrap in South Wales. It was, however, saved in 1974 and a restoration lasting 13 years ensued, including building new cylinders from scratch. Hornby LNER 'West Riding Limited' Double Open First Pack

LNER 'West Riding Limited' Double Open First Pack Following the success of the LNER’s newly-introduced ‘Coronation’ trains in 1935, a new train was introduced to operate between London King’s Cross and Leeds and Bradford in 1937. A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality. The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley's ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier. Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station. The next vehicles in the rake are coaches ‘C’ and ‘D’ and these comprise of two identical first class open coaches which offered enhanced comfort and also had a lavatory at each end. Railroad: GNR N2 1606 GNR Lined Green Introduced to a design by Nigel Gresley for the Great Northern Railway in 1920, 1744 was built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow in February 1921. At the Grouping two years later, it became LNER 4744 and then 9523 under the 1946 renumbering scheme, before finally becoming BR 69523 at nationalisation. Withdrawn from New England shed, Peterborough in September 1962, it was purchased by the Gresley Society Trust for preservation the following year. LNER A4 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' w/ Figure (Limited Edition) (150th Anniversary Collection) The LNER Class A4 Sir Nigel Gresley model locomotive is a limited edition model and part of The Great Railway Engineers Collection. This Collection marks 150 years since Sir Gresley's birth, and this locomotive includes a figure.  With a shiny new blue livery and NEM tension lock couplings, this steam locomotive is a wonderful collector's piece.  Entering service with the LNER as 4498 in Garter blue with streamlined side-skirting and red wheels, this was the 100th Gresley ‘Pacific’ to be built when it emerged from Doncaster Works in October 1937. Allocated to King’s Cross ‘Top Shed’ and used on front-line express services such as the prestigious ‘Coronation’ between London and Edinburgh, ‘SNG’ was built with a single chimney and had stainless steel numbers and letters for the tender added at a general overhaul in January 1939.  After a period in wartime black, when the side-skirts were permanently removed, the locomotive returned to lined Garter blue in March 1947. Painted into BR’s express passenger blue in September 1950, as 60007, it set a post-war steam record speed of 112mph on 23 May 1959. Ruston & Hornsby 88DS 97088 Loadhaul (DVLR) A total of 271 of Ruston & Hornsby’s ‘88DS’ four-wheel diesels were supplied mainly to industrial sites in the UK and overseas, and were rated at 80/88hp. Built in Lincoln between 1938 and 1967, seven of these were also used by BR’s North Eastern Region on departmental duties.  This model is finished in the distinctive ‘Loadhaul’ livery of black and orange. Formed in 1994 as part of the privatisation of BR, Loadhaul Ltd became part of EWS and subsequently DB Cargo. BR Class 08 08593/D3760 'Colchester TMD' Retro Lined Dark Blue  Add the Class 08 'Colchester TMD' model locomotive to your diesel collection in this elegant blue livery. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this is a delightful, highly detailed model.  Built at Crewe Works, this standard 350hp diesel electric shunter started life in November 1959 as D3760 and was allocated to Dannycraig depot at Swansea in South Wales. Under TOPS it was renumbered to 08593 and, in the 1990s, it was reallocated to Colchester where it received a retro-style red-lined BR livery with early ‘cycling lion’ emblem and its old number D3760.  It was also named ‘Colchester TMD’ which was applied in a cursive hand-writing style. BR Class 10 10119 'Margaret Ethel-Thomas Alfred Naylor' BR Blue (GCR Preserved)  This BR Class 10 is a stunning example of a non-standard locomotive, beautifully displayed in OO gauge model form. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this blue diesel locomotive is a highly detailled design for your model railway collection.  The BR Class 10 was a variation on the standard BR Class 08 shunter, fitted with Blackstone engines and GEC traction motors. Built at Darlington and Doncaster, 146 were produced between 1955 and 1962, but due to their non-standard nature, they were withdrawn early, between February 1967 and June 1972.  Built as D4067 in 1961 at Darlington, this locomotive initially worked at Darnall, Sheffield, followed by Langwith Junction and Shirebrook. Withdrawn in 1970, it was sold to the NCB and used at Betteshanger Colliery in Kent. Transrail Freight was set up as a trainload freight operator based in St Blazey, Cornwall, formed in 1994 from part of BR’s Trainload Freight division during the privatisation of British Rail. During this period, it acquired a number of Class 56 locomotives, retaining the Dutch-style livery but with the addition of Transrail’s logo and markings.  Transrail was one of a number of main line companies to be bought in 1996 to form new freight operator, English Welsh & Scottish (EWS). Stanier 5MT 'Black 5' 45055 BR Lined Black (Early)  Completed in November 1935, this ‘Black Five’ was built at Vulcan Foundry, near Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire.  It spent most of its working career in north-west England and North Wales, though in 1966 it had brief allocations at West Hartlepool and York, before moving back to the Liverpool area and serving at Bank Hall and then Aintree. SECR H Class 161 SECR Green This OO gauge SECR H Class locomotive model is a faithful representation of Harry Wainwright's H Class. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this model is DCC ready with an 8-pin socket ready for upgrading to digital control.  Designed by Harry Wainwright, 66 of these locomotives were built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway at its Ashford Works between 1904 and 1915 for London suburban and semi-fast trains. No.62046 emerged from the North British Locomotive Works in Glasgow in October 1949 and was first allocated to Darlington shed. LNER A4 4468 'Mallard' LNER Garter Blue (Sound/Smoke Fitted) One of the most famous of all steam locomotives, ‘Mallard’ still holds the world speed record for steam. In July 1938, it reached 126mph on Stoke Bank. Entering service in March of that year in LNER Garter blue, it had full side valances and red wheels, as depicted by our highly detailed model. It was renumbered 22 in 1946, by which time it carried wartime plain black. When it was withdrawn from King’s Cross in April 1963, it was in lined BR green and numbered 60022. The locomotive is preserved in its original livery at the National Railway Museum in York. 'Mallard' has always been one of our most popular models. In 2026, we have given the A4 a tooling update and the model now includes the new Hornby steam generator technology, working headlights and tender lights. LNER B12 61516 BR Lined Black (Late)  A shining replica of the BR B12 Class, this OO gauge model is highly detailed, with sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings. Upgrade to HM7000 with a 21-pin decoder (sold seperately).  Stephen D Holden designed the ‘S69’ inside cylinder 4-6-0s for the Great Eastern Railway. First introduced in 1911, it was the last of 71 built before the Grouping appeared in 1921. However, a further ten were constructed by Beyer, Peacock for the LNER in 1928, by which time they had been designated the ‘B12’ Class.  Built at Stratford Works in 1913, 1516 entered traffic on GER expresses out of London’s Liverpool Street station in the November. In 1924, it was renumbered 8516, then 1516 under the LNER’s 1947 renumbering scheme. LNER B12 8572 LNER Apple Green  This locomotive was one of the final batch of ten ‘B12s’ built by Beyer, Peacock in Manchester in 1928. It was renumbered 1572 by the LNER in 1946, but soon became BR’s 61572 in 1948.  Withdrawn from Norwich Thorpe in September 1961, it was acquired by the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway Society and moved to the nascent North Norfolk Railway at Sheringham in 1967, where, since completion of its overhaul in 1995, it has been a mainstay of heritage services.  The original is currently out of ticket, undergoing overhaul, so the model is presented in as-preserved condition – the only surviving example of a British inside-cylinder 4-6-0. Hornby L&MR Robert Stephenson’s 'Rocket'

L&MR Robert Stephenson’s 'Rocket'  For the first time, Stephenson's Rocket is presented as a solo locomotive, with a sleek yellow livery, fixed metal buffers and chain couplings. This highly detailed, diminuitive locomotive model is a must-have model for steam collectors, due to its historical importance and incredible model engineering.  This historically important locomotive was built in 1929 to participate in the Rainhill Trials, a competition set-up by the promoters of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway to find suitable motive power for its opening the following year. Built to the order of his father George (who was the L&MR’s principal engineer at the time), ‘Rocket’ was designed by Robert Stephenson and built at his Forth Street Works in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  The design was the most advanced in its day and ‘Rocket’ won the Trials. GWR Castle Class 5071 'Spitfire' BR Lined Green (Early)  This locomotive entered service with the GWR at Newton Abbot in June 1938, initially named ‘Clifford Castle’, but this was changed to 'Spitfire' during the Second World War following the aeroplane’s pivotal role in the Battle of Britain during 1940.  It then spent most of its career shedded in the West Country, though after nationalisation, it had spells in the late 1950s at Gloucester and Worcester. The locomotive was fitted with a double chimney and four-row superheater in June 1959, before moving to St. Philip’s Marsh, Plymouth in February 1962, from where it was withdrawn in October 1963.  This detailed OO gauge model depicts 5071 in its original form, with a smart green livery. These locomotives were a development of Churchward’s 1903 ‘31XX/51XX’ Class overseen by GWR Chief Mechanical Engineer, Charles Collett. New to Chester West shed, 5153 entered service in March 1930 and enjoyed a career that lasted almost 35 years.  After moving to Newton Abbot in the 1940s, it had a spell at Kidderminster before reaching Leamington in 1964, which was its final shed, withdrawal coming just three months later. GWR Large Prairie 61xx Class 6126 British Railways Green A lovely addition to any OO gauge layout, this BR Class 61XX Large Prairie Locomotive is gorgeous in green. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this is a deligtful, highly detailed steam locomotive.  The ‘61XX’ Class was a direct development of the earlier ‘5101’ Class by Charles Collett, with a total of 70 locomotives turned out at Swindon Works between 1931 and 1935. The main difference was an increase in boiler pressure, which was raised to 225psi and gave a consequent increase in tractive effort.  No. 6126 entered service in October 1931 and spent much of its career based along the main Paddington to Bristol line, with postings at Slough, Southall, Reading, and Didcot. Its working career took it to allocations at New England (Peterborough), Annesley, Westhouses and Newton Heath, Manchester, from where it was withdrawn in January 1967 after an incredibly short working life of just 12 years and almost two months. Battle of Britain Class (Rebuilt) 34053 '303 Squadron' BR Lined Green The BR Battle of Britain Class '303 Squadron' model locomotive brings military pride to your model railway layout. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, you can upgrade this OO model to HM7000 control by adding a 21-pin decoder (sold seperately).  This locomotive was built in 1947 at the SR’s Brighton Works as 21C153 and named ‘Sir Keith Park’. It was built to Bulleid’s three-cylinder air-smoothed design with chain drive and an oil-bath for lubrication. Along with many of its classmates, it was rebuilt to Jarvis’ more conventional design with air smooth casing removed and Walschaerts valve gear fitted.  Withdrawn in 1965, it was later rescued from Barry scrapyard and returned to steam by Southern Locomotives Ltd. LMS Patriot Class 5514 'Holyhead' LMS Lined Black This Hornby model of LMS ‘Patriot’ Class 4-6-0 No. 5514 ‘Holyhead’ is finished in accurate period detail as it appeared in the late 1930s. Designed for reliable performance on OO gauge layouts, the locomotive is DCC ready with a 21-pin decoder socket and if fitted with Metal sprung buffers and NEM tension lock couplers. History: Henry Fowler designed the ‘Patriot’ 4-6-0 for the LMS as an upgrade of the LNWR’s ‘Large Claughton’ Class for express passenger work. Built at both Crewe and Derby Works, 42 and ten respectively, 52 entered service between 1930 and 1934. ‘Holyhead’ was new from Crewe in September 1932, numbered 5983, but this was changed to 5514 in August 1938, as represented by the model.  The locomotive would later be rebuilt with a Stanier taper boiler in 1947, before becoming BR 45514, with withdrawal coming at Derby in May 1961, the first of the rebuilt ‘Patriots’ to be condemned. - OO Scale

Hornby LNER Class A4 60016 'Silver King' BR (Early) Green (TT)

The LNER Gresley A4 is one of the most iconic express locomotives in Great Britain, with its streamlined casing a classic symbol of the attitude towards speed and design in the 1930s, which saw increased competition to the railways from road and air travel. The LNER Board knew that they had to make travel between the major cities faster, comfortable and more reliable. Nigel Gresley, the LNER's Chief Mechanical Officer, travelled on the Fliegende Hamburger diesel locomotive in Germany and was impressed by its streamlining, although he realized it was only efficient at high speeds. Gresley was certain that a modified A3 Pacific, with streamlining, could haul greater loads than other locomotives at the same speed or faster and a series of trials were conducted to confirm the A3's suitability. With the trials successfully completed, the LNER Board gave Gresley the go-ahead to create the "Silver Jubilee" streamlined trains, the first of the new streamlined A4s.The streamlining of the A4s' steam circuit, higher boiler pressure and extension of the firebox to create a combustion chamber made them more efficient than the A3 as they consumed less coal and water- especially later on when they were also fitted with a Kylchap double chimney. This improved their free steaming capabilities further. Their streamlined design not only made them capable of high speeds, but created an up draught of smoke, obscuring the driver's vision, a major problem on the new Class A4 engines. The story goes that during wind tunnel testing, after several unsuccessful efforts to get the smoke to lift clear, a thumbprint was inadvertently left on the clay model just behind the chimney. This succeeded in clearing the smoke and was incorporated into the final design. 2511 Silver King was the 3rd A4 locomotive to be built, designed to pull the Silver Jubilee service. The locomotive entered service in November 1935 in the unique LNER Silver livery designed for the service. Hornby LNER Class A3 60078 'Night Hawk' BR (Early) Green (TT)

While the A1 was a fantastic locomotive that served its purpose as intended, it became clear reasonably quickly that some modifications could be made that would greatly improve its performance. These modifications however were too significant to avoid reclassifying the locomotives and as such the A1 Felstead 2743 was the first to be withdrawn from service only a handful of years after it was introduced, emerging from its shed in August 1928 as the first A3 ‘Super Pacific.’ The newly designated A3 locomotives had an improved boiler, larger cylinders and a conversion from right to left hand drive. 27 of the class were built as A3 locomotives from the get go, with all of the in service A1 examples being converted before 1950, the last such example to undergo this transformation was the then BR numbered 60068 Sir Visto. Night Hawk first entered LNER service on the fairly pleasing 24th October 1924 as locomotive number 2577 as an A1 locomotive. Rebuilt in January 1944 to an A3, the locomotive would go in to be numbered 78, and then 60078 under BR. Night Hawk would go on to be withdrawn on the 22nd October 1962, almost making it a nice round 38 years in service, before being scrapped at Doncaster in 1963. - NEXT 18 DCC Decoder Socket - TT:120 Scale

LNER Azuma Class 801/2 801207 'Darlington' Train Pack (Rail200) The ‘Azuma’ Class 801/1 and 801/2 sets, were introduced on the East Coast Main Line between 2017 and 2020. They are a development of the Class 800 bi-mode trains in the Hitachi AT300 product range, produced at their Newton Aycliffe facility in the north-east, but unlike their bi-mode counterparts, the Class 801s are the purely electric version of the ‘Azuma’, although they are fitted with ‘emergency’ diesel engines to allow them to limp home in case of overhead power failure.  The Class 801/2s are the full nine-car length trains, whereas the 801/1s operate as shorter five-car sets, often used in pairs. The first of the full-length Class 801/2s ran in November 2019, entering service on front-line London King’s Cross-Edinburgh trains, allowing the bi-mode Class 800/1s to be cascaded onto King’s Cross-Aberdeen services, which in turn replaced the remaining InterCity 125 sets on that route. There are currently 30 Class 801/2 sets in operation. Five of which are named, including Set No. 801207, which on 14 January was unveiled by LNER to mark the 200th Anniversary year of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.  The power cars carry LNER, ‘Azuma’ and ‘Railway 200’ markings, with the legend ‘Darlington’ towards their front ends. The five-car pack includes powered PDTRBF (Pantograph Driving Trailer Restaurant Buffet First) and non-powered PDTS (Pantograph Driving Trailer Standard) cars, plus three matching coaches; two MS (Motor Standard) cars and a MF (Motor First) car. TOUAX KFA 'Evergreen','NOL' & 'Delmas' 3x20 Containers Three different 20ft-long containers are featured with this version of Touax KFA, including those representing the Evergreen Marine Corporation, NOL (Neptune Orient Lines) and French shipping company Delmas. The KFA intermodal wagons were produced using bogies and components reclaimed from redundant wagons, such as the TEA tankers, and were built in Finland in the late 1980s for Tiphook Rail.  At just over 60ft-long, the KFA is able to accommodate a mix of different shipping containers from the standardised range, either three 20ft containers, or a 40ft plus 20ft container.  In total, 240 of these bogie flat wagons were produced and as well as intermodal work, have also been used for transporting waste material, military equipment and on rail infrastructure trains, for which some are still in use today.  As well as Tiphook Rail, the wagons have also been operated by Touax and Network Rail. - TT:120 Scale

The first of 155 new locomotives entered traffic in August 1923, while the last was finished at Swindon in August 1950 under British Railways. Sixteen further locomotives – 15 ‘Stars’ and one-off ‘Pacific’ No. 111 Great Bear – were also rebuilt as ‘Castles’, making 171 in total. No. 5081 was built in 1939 and originally named ‘Penrice Castle’ but was renamed ‘Lockheed Hudson’ in 1941. There are currently 21 of these running as nine-car sets. Sets designated Classes 800/1 and 800/2 operate as nine and five-car sets respectively under ‘Azuma’ branding for operator LNER on the East Coast Main Line. The GWR ‘IET’ sets are numbered 800001-800036 and 800301-800321 and several of these trains have been given two names, one on each of the driving units. These are mainly the names of well-known people from history, including famous sportsmen and women, politicians, decorated war veterans and members of the Royal Family, with the driving units each carrying a different name (some sets do have just one name). Interesting exceptions include 800010 which has ‘Paddington Bear’ at one end and his creator ‘Michael Bond’ at the other, and 800316 which is named ‘Lionesses’, in honour of the England Ladies football team. LNER, Gresley Corridor Passenger Brake '4239' This highly detailed Gresley Corridor Full Brake Coach is presented in a varnished teak finish with printed decoration including the LNER branding and its unique number 4239. This coach does not have windows as it wasn’t meant for carrying passengers, it contained the guard’s van. The model has detail underneath and metal wheels for finer running. Hornby’s Gresley 61ft 6in coaching stock represents a standard design that Nigel Gresley continued from his days as CME at the Great Northern Railway, through to the LNER at the Grouping in 1923, with very little change to the basic layout of each vehicle.  Finished in varnished teak, these LNER standard vehicles were ahead of their time, with Pullman-type gangways and buckeye couplings, that would later become standard on BR-built coaching stock. However, the wooden teak-panelled bodies were more traditional than modern, with square mouldings and windows. First introduced in 1967, the units were mainly built by BR at York, although some of the early vehicles were produced at BR’s Derby Works. Originally numbered 7701-7894, 194 standard four-car sets entered service and were subsequently renumbered into the 30XX and 31XX series in the 1980s to make them TOPS-compliant. Birth of the Railways Train Pack (Railway 200) Representing the formative years of steam-powered railways, these three locomotives were built between 1825 and 1838. The first is ‘Locomotion No. 1’, designed by George and Robert Stephenson. It was built at their factory in Newcastle for the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, where it became the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train on a public railway. In doing so, it became the first steam locomotive to both operate and haul a passenger-carrying train on a public railway in September 1825. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary. With the experience they gained, Robert Stephenson & Co. entered a design for the 1829 Rainhill Trials, held to find suitable motive power for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Their entry, ‘Rocket’, was the clear winner and formed the basis for future steam locomotive design on the L&MR, which opened the following year. By 1838, locomotive design had already moved on, and 0-4-2 No. 57 ‘Lion’, was one of a pair of ‘luggage’ locomotives built to a Stephenson patent by Todd, Kitson & Laird of Leeds, also for the L&MR. Please note: Locomotion No.1 comes fitted with a Next 18-pin socket, but due to the locomotive's size limitations, sadly it cannot take an HM7000 Next 18-pin decoder. 12t Tanker Wagon, BP Shell 'A5066' The tank wagon was the main method of transporting liquid cargo in the early days of the railway. Instead of loading liquids into drums or barrels and then having to load these on and off closed or open vans at each side of a journey, the tank wagon could be filled with the fluid of choice of the operator and then emptied at the other end. This also increased the carrying capacity of each wagon, as a wagon with a 12-tonne weight limit could carry more fluid if it did not have to factor in the weight of many barrels on top of their contents. This type of tank wagon was more commonly seen hauling hazardous liquid chemicals, with different designs for milk and other such cargo. Southern Rail, T9 302 This locomotive was completed at the London & South Western Railway’s Nine Elms Works in late December 1900. Of the 66 built, 35 of the T9 Class were completed at Nine Elms, with a further 31 examples built by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow. Nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’ as they consistently ran at speeds of up to 85mph, the last in service was No. 30120, which is preserved as part of the National Collection. Originally paired with a conventional six-wheel tender, it received an eight-wheel watercart version in July 1935. LMS Stanier 5MT Black 5 5047 Known as ‘Black Fives’, or in Scotland as ‘Hikers’, Stanier’s 5MT 4-6-0s were one of the most numerous classes of locomotives built in the UK, with 842 examples built at a variety of locations, including the railway’s own works at Crewe, Derby and Horwich, plus private builders Vulcan Foundry and Armstrong Whitworth, the latter building by far the most with 327 machines. No. 5047 was built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows in 1935 with a domeless boiler and spent most of its career in Scotland. The ‘Hall’ was a direct development of the ‘Saint’, No. 2925 Saint Martin being used as its prototype in 1924 by Charles B. Collett, Churchward’s successor as Chief Mechanical Engineer at the GWR. GWR Saint Class - Lord Palmer 2975 Entering service in March 1905 as the unnamed No. 175, it was given the name Viscount Churchill in 1907 and numbered 2975 in December 1912. In February 1924, the locomotive was renamed Sir Ernest Palmer, but when Baronet Palmer gained peerage in June 1933, it was subsequently renamed Lord Palmer in the October. Dublo: BR (Early) Princess Coronation Duchess of Buccleuch 46230   Also known as the ‘Duchess’ Class, Stanier’s ‘Princess Coronations’ were among the biggest and most powerful express passenger locomotives in Britain.  Thirty-five were built at Crewe Works between 1937 and 1948, many having streamlined casing. Ten were set aside for hauling the prestigious ‘Coronation Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow. No. 46230 wasn’t one of those, but it was the first of the third batch of locomotives, which consisted of five non-streamlined versions, and went new to Camden in June 1938 as LMS No. 6230.  At Nationalisation in 1948, the locomotive became BR No. 46230 and was painted in lined Brunswick green as depicted by the model. BR (Early), Class T9 30338 Designed for express passenger work on the London & South Western Railway, 66 of these elegant 4-4-0s were built between 1899 and 1901. Built at the LSWR’s Nine Elms Works, No. 30338 entered service in October 1901 as No. 338 and lasted in service until withdrawn by British Railways in April 1961, having completed a respectable 59 years and six months. This locomotive was the last of the class to be built at Nine Elms and had a wider cab and revised splashers compared to earlier class members. BR Late Thompson Class A2-3 Watling Street No 60521 Of the 15 newly built A2s, only the first, No. 500, emerged from Doncaster under Edward Thompson while he was Chief Mechanical Engineer. That was in May 1946 and, by the end of the following month, Thompson had retired aged 65. The remaining 14 were built under his successor, Arthur Peppercorn, between July 1946 and September 1947. They had planned to build 25 in total, but Peppercorn cancelled the remainder while he made modifications to the design. His new design became the A2 and the Thompson locomotives were designated A2/3s. Hornby GBRf Class 67 Bo-Bo 67027 - Era 11

GBRf, Class 67, Bo-Bo, 67027 The Class 67s were constructed by Alstom Meinfesa in Valencia between 1999 and 2000 for EWS. No. 67027 ‘Charlotte’ was named ‘Rising Star’ in 2003. Various changes took place over the years. In 2007, the ownership of the locomotive was transferred to DB Cargo UK. In 2014, the locomotive adopted the DB Cargo UK red livery, changing from the previous EWS red & yellow livery.  Ownership was again transferred to Colas Rail in 2017. To reflect this, the livery was amended to Colas Rail yellow, orange and black at the Toton TMD. The locomotive name changed to ‘Charlotte’ in the same year. In 2022, ownership was transferred to GB Railfreight and repainted in a blue and yellow livery, although this didn't last long as GBRF Rejected the 2 Class 67s and they were returned back to Colas. The locomotive was first allocated to the Bounds Green (BN) depot and 43062 was initially part of the 254004 set. It was repainted in an InterCity Swallow livery after a few years in service. As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997, including 43062. The Class 43 locomotive was repainted in a Virgin red and black livery for use on CrossCountry services. Virgin handed over ten HST power cars in 2002. 43062 was given to Network Rail for use as part of the New Measurement Train (NMT). The locomotive was outshopped in a bright Network Rail yellow livery and because of this, the train was often referred to as the ‘Flying Banana’. The NMT travels at 125mph to monitor and record any faults on the track. 43062 was named ‘John Armitt’ after the chairman of the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission and had a red nameplate fitted. Loram UK won a Network Rail £8-million five-year contract to maintain the NMT in 2020. 43062 was recently overhauled at Loram Derby and returned to traffic in January 2024 with No. 43257 at the rear. The first wagon was in service from 1892.  Design for the ‘Loriot’ wagons evolved to include sloping ramps at either end, enabling the machinery to be loaded and unloaded quickly and efficiently. Previous versions featured low, wide wells and no end ramps.  A new wagon in the series, ‘Loriot Y’, was constructed in 1937 to Diagram G39 and its number was No. 41989. An update to the design included ‘I’ beam girders rather than rolled beams and end-axle guard plates. No. 41990 (DW41990 under BR) was the second Loriot Y wagon to be constructed in 1939. The wagon conveyed excavators and other plant machinery over the GWR network. During the Second World War, the two wagons were used constantly to transport bulldozers for when there was wartime bombing. The ‘Loriot Y’ wagon model represents the prototypical wagon under BR ownership. The running number, DW41990, is emblazoned on the side. A wood grain print is used to replicate the wooden planks seen on the prototypical model. The model’s load is a BR Coles Crane, made by CORGI®.

Major modifications were required for the Class 43 power cars to make them compatible with the Mk3 coaches. These included changing the train supply from three-phase to 1,000V conventional ETS, fitting jumper connections, changing the central door locking system and more modifications to the couplings and electrical systems. Grand Central launched their new London King’s Cross to Sunderland passenger service on 18 December 2007. No. 43465 was outshopped from Crewe Works in October 1977 as 43065 in an InterCity Blue and Grey livery. The locomotive entered traffic straight after at Heaton. Not long after, it was repainted into an InterCity Swallow livery. In the late 1980s, 43065 was one of eight power cars fitted with buffers and TDM multiple working equipment to make sure it could work with brand new Class 91 electric locomotives using Mk3 rolling stock. Grand Central acquired 43065 and refurbished the locomotive at Brush Traction in 2010.  It faced a renumbering change to 43465 and acquired a new Grand Central black and orange striped livery. In 2017, the Grand Central Class 43 locomotives were purchased by East Midlands Trains with the last Grand Central HST service commencing on New Year’s Eve. By 2018, 43465 was painted in an East Midlands Trains blue livery with red and orange stripes. This livery was updated for the ex-Grand Central HSTs by featuring a deeper blue gradient. 43365 is currently in service as a Rail Adventure power car and was part of Rail Adventure’s first dive onto British rails, with the company previously only being based out of Germany. No. 43484 was outshopped from Crewe Works on 25 February 1978 in a BR InterCity blue and yellow livery and was also part of unit 254015. The locomotive entered service in April of the same year. Not long after, it was repainted into an InterCity Swallow livery. In the late 1980s, 43084 was one of eight power cars fitted with buffers and TDM multiple working equipment to make sure it could work with brand new Class 91 electric locomotives using Mk3 rolling stock. As for temporary names, the locomotive carried ‘County of Derbyshire’ and then ‘Peter Fox 1942-2011 Platform 5’ nameplates up until the end of The Grand Farewell tour.  By 2018, 43484 was painted in an East Midlands Trains blue livery with red and orange stripes. This livery was updated for the ex-Grand Central HSTs by featuring a deeper blue gradient. 43484 is currently in service as a Rail Adventure power car and was part of Rail Adventure’s first dive onto British rails, with the company previously only being based out of Germany. 43484 was outshopped from the painters in Rail Adventure grey on 19 April 2021.

The vans, reminiscent of a classic vent van albeit extended served a very similar purpose to their stout predecessors. The VDA was a general use van designed to haul anything and everything.  The VDA vans were used on 'Speedlink' services designed to quickly haul general freight around the country. The wagons were rapidly withdrawn after the 'Speedlink' service was discontinued; 436 vans were in service at the end of 1990 but by August 1994 only 97 were shown on BR books. By 2008, only two VDA vans remained.

BR Intercity, Mk3 Tourist First, 41099 In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe. Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long, enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk brakes and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. BR, W1 Class 'Hush Hush' Streamlined, 4-6-4, 60700 Includes: - British Railways branding in Gill Sans Font - Garter Blue livery - Accessory bag (drain cocks, pipes) - 2x extra trailing wheels for the Cartazzi truck (if your layout has sufficient curvature) - Accurate cab detail - Double Kylchap double blast-pipe arrangement - Streamlined Non corridor tender type - 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket - Era 5 - OO scale Locomotive information and history: Having completed nearly 90,000 miles of test running since new, Sir Nigel Gresley's W1 4-6-4 No. 10000 entered Darlington Works on 21 August 1935 for what was anticipated to be a major overhaul and modification. During this period Gresley decided that it was time to rebuild 10000 as a three cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler. Subsequently, 10000 was moved to the Doncaster Works on 13 October 1936 and this is where the first drawing for the modification were being prepared. When 10000 was finally released from Doncaster Works in November 1937, it was a significantly different locomotive, being fitted with a diagram 111 boiler that was very similar to the diagram 108 boiler fitted to No. 2006 'Wolf of Badenoch', and with a streamlined casing to the same pattern as the A4 class. As many components as possible from the original W1 were used in the rebuild, including the frames, which were shortened by 1 ½ feet at the front end. Other items, where needed, were sourced from the A4 class, the A3 class or, like the front bogie, from the B17 and an experimental double Kylchap blastpipe and chimney was fitted. The locomotive was turned out in Garter Blue as per some of the A4's (in 1937 this became a standard livery). The cab, while similar to that of the A4 class, 60700 was considerably longer and this led to the locomotive's tender's coal delivery chute having to be lengthened to compensate for the extra distance from the firebox doors. The original tender was retained, but with superficial modifications, such as to the curvature of the front plates and the addition of streamlined plating to the front and rear, although this was partially removed just a year later in 1938. Up to the outbreak of war in 1939 and during the war years, 10000 worked mainly on Kings Cross main line duties and with its power and smooth riding it was a popular engine with the LNER's drivers, though less so with the firemen due to the distance between the shovelling plate and the firehole door. The locomotive also became more 'fitter' friendly after April 1942 when the skirting was removed from ahead and behind the outside cylinders to improve access in wartime conditions. At this time the 10000 was painted in wartime Black livery and with only 'N E' on the tender sides. By 1946 and now repainted in Garter blue livery, the corridor tender was swapped for the streamlined non-corridor tender from 4462 (BR 60004) William Whitelaw and the locomotive was engaged in more varied duties, working occasional passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge from Kings Cross alongside the occasional 'lodging' turns to Newcastle. By 1948 under the new British Railways, the locomotive received the number 60700 and "British Railways" insignia on the tender in Gills Sans font. Following allocation to Doncaster on 25 October 1953, 60700 became a more frequent visitor to Leeds and also worked turns to Sheffield, as well as hauling Doncaster to Peterborough passenger services and various braked goods trains. In a similar circumstance to 10000 never receiving its proposed name of 'British Enterprise' in November 1929, 60700 never received its intended name of 'Pegasus', for which the nameplates were cast on 13 April 1951. At this time the locomotive lost its Garter Blue livery for the new "Express Passenger Blue" with white and black lining. After an interesting and slightly troubled life, the locomotive was scrapped at its Darlington birthplace in 1959. Interesting to note is that as 60700 was going into works for scrapping, the original marine boiler the locomotive was fitted with, had been perched on bricks as steam raising boiler outside the works and outlasted the locomotive by a few years.

Hornby BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 - Era 4

BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 Includes: - BR Black livery - Pipework represented in copper or heat lagging - Detailed cab interior - Accessory bag includes steam cocks - Removable coal load - 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket - Era 4 - OO scale Locomotive information: The British Railways Standard 9F Class was a 2-10-0 steam locomotive, the last of the standardised BR designs. The Robert Riddles design was intended as a long distance heavy express freight locomotive. In total 251 of the class were produced between January 1954 and March 1960, with the final locomotive No. 92220 'Evening Star' being the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The huge length of the 10 coupled driving wheels proved problematic when faced with tight curves, a situation that freight haulage would make inevitable. A solution was found by removing the flanges from the centre driving wheel and reducing the size on the flanges on the second and fourth driving axle's wheels.  Riddles had chosen the 2-10-0 wheel configuration in-order to spread the load of the boiler over a greater area. This meant that the boiler had to be raised considerably compared to other designs to allow the firebox to sit above the trailing driving wheels. As a result, the 9F features a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate. In operation the class proved extremely versatile. Not only did the 9F excel as a freight locomotive, but when required it also succeeded as a passenger locomotive. Reports even suggest that when 92220 'Evening Star' was used to pull the Red Dragon express service between Cardiff and London it was forced to delay its arrival to allow the restaurant services to be completed, having outperformed the normal Britannia Class locomotives used on the service.  This was not the only time 9Fs had been recorded outperforming dedicated express locomotives and on such services the locomotives were capable of running at over 90mph. This combination of high speed, fast acceleration and powerful hauling capabilities mean that many consider the class to be pinnacle of British steam locomotive design. Locomotive numbers 92165-92167 were built with a mechanical stoker. This system used a helical screw to move coal from the tender straight into the firebox. This meant that coal could be burnt a faster rate than a fireman could maintain otherwise.  Systems like this proved extremely useful on long distance American railways however in Britain it was rare for a locomotive to require such as high rate of coal delivery over a long period of time meaning that a good fireman could prove just as effective. Locomotive 92002 was the third such locomotive to be constructed by BR, being built at Crewe in 1954. The locomotive was outshopped with the BR1G tender and in the usual BR black colour scheme. The locomotive would go on to be one of the 106 locomotives withdrawn in 1967, the locomotive would not be preserved.

(Will not operate on analogue) Locomotive information and history: With the nationalisation of Britain’s railways, the ‘Princess Royal’ Class Turbomotive later shed its LMS insignia, to be replaced with the new emblem of British Rail and a black livery shortly after receiving its new crest. After a long period of general repair, Turbomotive returned to the main line in 1947 under the number 46202, continuing its function as a distinct and entirely uniquely designed steam turbine locomotive. In 1949, the locomotive suffered a turbine failure and as result of post-war budgeting of the time, it was best decided to take the locomotive from service and awaiting rebuilding into a convetional design.  Following rebuilding and completion in 1952, 46202 rolled out of Crewe works loooking very different. The rebuilding included the fitting of various Princess Coronation (Duchess) class parts and became a half way between the eariler Princess Royal class and preceding Princess Coronation class. Now in BR green livery and named "Princess Anne", the locomotive wuld only see two months of service before being involved in one of the worst railway disasters ever, at Harrow and Wealdstone. It was scrapped shortly after deemed beyond the point of saving. It is because of 46202 been scrapped, that BR designed and built 8P class "Duke of Gloucester" as a replacement.

Ruston & Hornsby Ltd, of Lincoln, was formed as the result of the merger between Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd and Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd on September 11, 1918 and their first narrow gauge diesel locomotive left the works on September 1, 1931. In the summer of 1932, production was moved to the larger Boultham Works, where the firm were eventually to become Britain's largest builder of diesel locomotives, with over 6,500 being built by the time production ceased in 1969. Almost as soon as the firm's 44/48HP 0-4-0 locomotives were making an appearance, an upgraded, more powerful 0-4-0 was on the drawing board. Although many of the features of the 44/48HP were retained for the new 80/88HP, such as the chain drive and running gear, a new type of transmission was fitted, along with Westinghouse airbrakes. The new power unit, Ruston's own 4VPB, delivered 80BHP at 1000rpm and was later supplanted by Ruston's improved 4VPH that delivered 88BHP, but it required compressed air to be injected into the cylinders to be able to start. While running, an air reservoir was kept charged via the braking system, but after standing idle for a period the reservoir depleted and a secondary source was required to recharge the reservoir. This was achieved by fitting a small, secondary 1½HP 'donkey' engine, giving rise to a distinctive raised cover on the right hand side of the engine compartment that differed in size and placement depending on the make of engine used. Two basic weight options were offered for the 80/88HP, of 17 tons and 20 tons, the difference being achieved by attaching weights to the outside frames, as well as to the front and rear buffer beams. In 1941, Ruston's locomotive classifications were changed, with the 80/88HP becoming 88DS (with the narrow gauge versions being assigned the DSM and DSN suffix, and the broader gauges assigned DSW). Outward appearance changes to the 'standard' locomotives were mainly confined to the cab area, with examples from mid-1947 replacing the open cab with a fully enclosed cab that featured several ad-hoc styles of front window. The final 88DS, 518494, left Boultham Works on 29 November 1967, bringing to an end a production run of 271 locomotives.

Hornby Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery

Mk4 Driving Van Trailer (DVT) - GNER Livery Built at Metro-Cammell's Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies. Mk4s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport. Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called 'Project Mallard' named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives. Built by Metro-Cammell for inclusion in the InterCity 225 sets, 32 Mk4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) were built with the bodyshell manufactured under sub-contract by Breda in Italy. Whilst they were designed to operate with Class 91 locomotives as part of the InterCity 225 set, Mk4 DVTs have also operated with Class 90 and Class 89 locomotives. Although Mk4 DVTs have spent most of their lives on the ECML, they are now being cascaded down to other franchises including Transport for Wales due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.
