Railroad: Royal Mail Travelling Post Office 80331 The Traveling Post Office (TPO) has been a fixture on Britain’s railways since mail was first carried on trains in the 1830s.  The sorting of mail in transit gradually reduced in the 21st century as mechanised sorting at depots became commonplace and concerns about the safety of workers carrying out letter-sorting at increased main line speeds. The last TPO using carriages in the UK took place during the night of 9th January 2004. After that, a fleet of Royal Mail-branded Class 325 EMUs continued to carry parcels by rail, but these too ceased in 2024. TPOs could collect and deposit mail on the move by means of lineside apparatus. Several of these vehicles have survived in preservation. Railroad: BR Mk1 NKA 94157 "Super GUV" RES Rail Express Services (RES) was the BR sector responsible for the transport of mail and parcels, including the Travelling Post Office. General Utility Vans (GUVs) were used in large numbers to transport mail and parcels, though some were used as newspaper vans.  These vehicles were part of the BR Mk1 coach family and 907 examples were built between 1956 and 1960 by BR at its York, Doncaster and Glasgow works. A number were also produced under contract by the Pressed Steel Company Ltd at Cowley, near Oxford. With a carrying capacity of 13.8 tons (14 tonnes) these multi-door bogie vans were versatile, some even being converted for carrying motor vehicles. The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST. Hornby Tavern Coach Pack 'At the Sign of the Three Plovers'

BR Kitchen and Buttery Car & Composite Restaurant 'At the Sign of the Three Plovers' Coach Pack  This highly detailed OO gauge model coach pack represents one of eight pairs of vehicles introduced by BR in 1949 to provide catering facilities with a difference.  The idea came from Oliver Bulleid, the former Southern Railway’s Chief Mechanical Engineer. This pair operated on the Eastern Region and consisted of a Composite Dining Car and a ‘Tavern Coach’. Internally, each ‘tavern’ was decorated to mimic an olde English pub, with tiled floor, whitewashed walls, ‘oak’ beams, high-backed settles and illuminated by ‘lanterns’. - OO Scale

BR Mk3 Virgin West Coast 4 Car Coach Pack  Includes: Trailer Standard 42176 Trailer Standard 42177 Trailer Standard 42105 Trailer First 41059 British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975 with improved standards of comfort in response to competition from airlines and increased use of private motor cars. Designed and built by BREL, they were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock, but with the development of the High Speed Train (HST), were soon adapted for use at speeds of up to 125mph (220km/h). The first version of the Mk3 coach had actually been built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST. Mk3 coaches continued to be built until 1988, but multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell were built until the early 1990s. The standard length of a Mk3 coach is 75ft (23m), which is ten feet longer than its predecessor, the Mk2, and is of monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin. Virgin operated several sets of these coaches for use with its HST power cars. Following introduction of its Pendolinos, most of Virgin’s Mk3 coaches moved on to other operators, though it did retain one set for peak time cover and had them refurbished at Doncaster and painted into the same livery as its Pendolino and Voyager trains. Railroad: BR Class 37 37422 'Pegasus' Swietelsky Rail Services (Sound Fitted)  Originally new from Vulcan Foundry in February 1965 as D6966, the locomotive this RailRoad model is based on became 37266 under the TOPS numbering system in 1974.  Its career started at Tinsley, Sheffield and it also had postings at Stratford and Landore under BR. In January 1986 it was reclassified to 37/4 and renumbered 37422. The locomotive has worn several liveries and had several different operators, including EWS, DB Schenker, and DRS. It became part of the Harry Needle Railroad Company spot hire fleet based at Barrow Hill, which was taken over by Swietelsky, an Austrian-based railway construction and maintenance contractor, in January 2025. A new set of carriages was built that was identical to the ‘Coronation’ with four twin articulated coaches, though not the streamlined beavertail observation car, named the ‘West Riding Limited’. Carriages were in pairs, sharing a bogie between the two, thus reducing friction and improving ride quality. The train first ran on 27th September 1937 and achieved an average speed of 63.3mph (101.9km/h) between King’s Cross and Bradford. It was hauled by Gresley's ‘A4’ No. 4492 ‘Dominion of New Zealand’, which had emerged from Doncaster Works only three months earlier. Services were suspended for the duration of the Second World War, but were reinstated in 1949. A modern version of the train is still operated by the present-day LNER with a 6.30am departure from Bradford Forster Square station. The next vehicles in the rake are coaches ‘C’ and ‘D’ and these comprise of two identical first class open coaches which offered enhanced comfort and also had a lavatory at each end. LNER Flying Scotsman & GWR Pendennis Castle (Australian Tour) Train Pack  In 1988, Australia celebrated its bicentenary and, to mark the occasion, the world-famous ‘Flying Scotsman’ was invited to travel from Britain to take part in a series of railtours that were part of the ‘Aus Steam 88’ Festival, arriving in October that year.  Already resident in Western Australia since 1977, in the care of the Pilbara Railway Historical Society, former GWR ‘Castle’ Class 4-6-0 ‘Pendennis Castle’ was moved by road to Perth in early 1989 to operate alongside its one-time rival ‘A3’ Class ‘Pacific’. This unlikely reunion occurred almost 9,000 miles from where a week-long locomotive exchange once took place between the LNER and GWR, in April 1925.  This LNER and GWR Train Pack celebrates that landmark event in Australia 37 years ago in 1989. This Collection marks 150 years since Sir Stanier's birth, and this locomotive includes a figure. With a shiny bold red livery and NEM tension lock couplings, this steam locomotive is a must-have for collectors. The ‘Princess Coronation’ Class, also known as the ‘Duchess’ Class, was an enlarged and improved version of William Stanier’s successful ‘Princess Royal’ Class ‘Pacific’. The first ten class members emerged from Crewe Works in a streamlined form during 1937 and five of these were put aside specifically for hauling the prestigious ‘Coronation Scot’ between London Euston and Glasgow Central. These were painted in Caledonian blue and had silver horizontal lining, which matched the carriages they pulled. No. 6220 set a new British steam speed record of 114mph in 1937, but this was beaten by the LNER’s ‘Mallard’ in 1938. Built with a single chimney, 6220 was the last of the original 15 to be fitted with a double blast pipe and chimney in 1944. SECR H Class 161 SECR Green This OO gauge SECR H Class locomotive model is a faithful representation of Harry Wainwright's H Class. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this model is DCC ready with an 8-pin socket ready for upgrading to digital control.  Designed by Harry Wainwright, 66 of these locomotives were built for the South Eastern & Chatham Railway at its Ashford Works between 1904 and 1915 for London suburban and semi-fast trains. In July 1938, it reached 126mph on Stoke Bank. Entering service in March of that year in LNER Garter blue, it had full side valances and red wheels, as depicted by our highly detailed model. It was renumbered 22 in 1946, by which time it carried wartime plain black. When it was withdrawn from King’s Cross in April 1963, it was in lined BR green and numbered 60022. The locomotive is preserved in its original livery at the National Railway Museum in York. 'Mallard' has always been one of our most popular models. GWR Castle Class 5071 'Spitfire' BR Lined Green (Early)  This locomotive entered service with the GWR at Newton Abbot in June 1938, initially named ‘Clifford Castle’, but this was changed to 'Spitfire' during the Second World War following the aeroplane’s pivotal role in the Battle of Britain during 1940.  It then spent most of its career shedded in the West Country, though after nationalisation, it had spells in the late 1950s at Gloucester and Worcester. The locomotive was fitted with a double chimney and four-row superheater in June 1959, before moving to St. Philip’s Marsh, Plymouth in February 1962, from where it was withdrawn in October 1963.  This detailed OO gauge model depicts 5071 in its original form, with a smart green livery. These locomotives were a development of Churchward’s 1903 ‘31XX/51XX’ Class overseen by GWR Chief Mechanical Engineer, Charles Collett. New to Chester West shed, 5153 entered service in March 1930 and enjoyed a career that lasted almost 35 years.  After moving to Newton Abbot in the 1940s, it had a spell at Kidderminster before reaching Leamington in 1964, which was its final shed, withdrawal coming just three months later. With sprung metal buffers and NEM tension lock couplings, this is a deligtful, highly detailed steam locomotive.  The ‘61XX’ Class was a direct development of the earlier ‘5101’ Class by Charles Collett, with a total of 70 locomotives turned out at Swindon Works between 1931 and 1935. The main difference was an increase in boiler pressure, which was raised to 225psi and gave a consequent increase in tractive effort.  No. 6126 entered service in October 1931 and spent much of its career based along the main Paddington to Bristol line, with postings at Slough, Southall, Reading, and Didcot. GWR Saint Class 2920 'Saint David' BR Lined Black (Early) Of the 77 Saint Class members built by GWR between 1902 and 1913, 2920 ‘Saint David’ was one of the 47 that survived beyond nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948. Part of the third batch of 20 to be built in 1907, the locomotive was new to Cardiff Canton shed. It underwent several changes during its career, including the fitting of a superheated boiler in 1909 and outside steam pipes in December 1932. This model is presented in BR livery, the condition in which it operated through to its withdrawal in October 1953, by which point it was one of the last four still in service. This model was developed with the helpful guidance from the Didcot Railway Center who kindly gave us access to their archive of drawings and access to the Lady of Legend locomotive. The Saint class model features a powerful 5 pole skew wound motor, flickering firebox and is designed to be fully compatible with the HM7000 21-Pin decoder for full DCC and sound control. LNER Azuma Class 801/2 801207 'Darlington' Train Pack (Rail200) The ‘Azuma’ Class 801/1 and 801/2 sets, were introduced on the East Coast Main Line between 2017 and 2020. They are a development of the Class 800 bi-mode trains in the Hitachi AT300 product range, produced at their Newton Aycliffe facility in the north-east, but unlike their bi-mode counterparts, the Class 801s are the purely electric version of the ‘Azuma’, although they are fitted with ‘emergency’ diesel engines to allow them to limp home in case of overhead power failure.  The Class 801/2s are the full nine-car length trains, whereas the 801/1s operate as shorter five-car sets, often used in pairs. The first of the full-length Class 801/2s ran in November 2019, entering service on front-line London King’s Cross-Edinburgh trains, allowing the bi-mode Class 800/1s to be cascaded onto King’s Cross-Aberdeen services, which in turn replaced the remaining InterCity 125 sets on that route. There are currently 30 Class 801/2 sets in operation. Five of which are named, including Set No. 801207, which on 14 January was unveiled by LNER to mark the 200th Anniversary year of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.  The power cars carry LNER, ‘Azuma’ and ‘Railway 200’ markings, with the legend ‘Darlington’ towards their front ends. The five-car pack includes powered PDTRBF (Pantograph Driving Trailer Restaurant Buffet First) and non-powered PDTS (Pantograph Driving Trailer Standard) cars, plus three matching coaches; two MS (Motor Standard) cars and a MF (Motor First) car. The hopper body is made of unpainted metal and has a black underframe, which was standard across the eras, and it has the yellow framework that BR Railfreight introduced in 1987. The wagon is numbered 358764.  When originally designed in 1964, some hopper wagons intended for Merry-go-Round (MGR) trains were given an extension to their tops, known as a canopy or top skirt, which allowed their carrying capacity to be increased to 32 tonnes, using the full 45 tonnes gross laden weight allowed for a two-axle wagon. There were three basic types ‘HBA’, ‘HCA’ and ‘HFA’. Manufactured by Hitachi Rail, 36 five-car sets were built between 2014 and 2018 as part of the UK Government’s ‘Intercity Express Programme’ (IEP) and branded ‘Intercity Express Train’ (IET). The trains are bi-mode, capable of working along the newly electrified sections of the route, while diesel engines allow them to reach destinations that have not yet been electrified. An intended fleet of purely electric Class 801 ‘IETs’ were instead built to bi-mode specification in 2017/8, due to delays in completing electrification work, and these were designated as Class 800/3s. There are currently 21 of these running as nine-car sets. Sets designated Classes 800/1 and 800/2 operate as nine and five-car sets respectively under ‘Azuma’ branding for operator LNER on the East Coast Main Line. The GWR ‘IET’ sets are numbered 800001-800036 and 800301-800321 and several of these trains have been given two names, one on each of the driving units. Hornby LNER, Gresley Corridor Passenger Brake '4239'

LNER, Gresley Corridor Passenger Brake '4239' This highly detailed Gresley Corridor Full Brake Coach is presented in a varnished teak finish with printed decoration including the LNER branding and its unique number 4239. This coach does not have windows as it wasn’t meant for carrying passengers, it contained the guard’s van. The model has detail underneath and metal wheels for finer running. Hornby’s Gresley 61ft 6in coaching stock represents a standard design that Nigel Gresley continued from his days as CME at the Great Northern Railway, through to the LNER at the Grouping in 1923, with very little change to the basic layout of each vehicle.  Finished in varnished teak, these LNER standard vehicles were ahead of their time, with Pullman-type gangways and buckeye couplings, that would later become standard on BR-built coaching stock. However, the wooden teak-panelled bodies were more traditional than modern, with square mouldings and windows. The company continued to build them until 1942 with little change over the 1923-42 build period. The coaches were mounted on Gresley double-bolster 8ft 6in bogies. - OO Scale

GWR, Collet Corridor Brake Third Class LH Coach '5040' Charles B. Collett developed a new range of standard coaches from 1922 to coincide with the reintroduction of the chocolate and cream livery onto the company’s network. These covered a wide variety of types, but the most common type introduced between 1925 and 1929 was the ‘bow-ended’ corridor coach, of which several hundred were built at Swindon.  The idea of the ‘bow ends’ was to reduce the length of the corridor connections between carriages following complaints from nervous passengers about walking across them when the train was travelling at speed. BR, Gresley Corridor Buffet Car 'E12505E' Gresley’s standard LNER 61ft 6in coaches were solidly built, and despite being a design inherited from the GNR in 1923 and built until 1942, many of them lasted in service until 1965, working alongside BR Mk1 coaches, which they were compatible with. The varnished teak finish was vulnerable to extremes of weather and required constant maintenance to stop them from looking tatty with peeled varnish and cracked panels. Because of this, BR painted the wooden panels crimson and cream after nationalisation, with all-over crimson for the full brake vehicles. A total of 38 former LNER teak coaches have been preserved, including some that have been restored to a varnished teak finish. - OO Scale

Birth of the Railways Train Pack (Railway 200) Representing the formative years of steam-powered railways, these three locomotives were built between 1825 and 1838. The first is ‘Locomotion No. 1’, designed by George and Robert Stephenson. It was built at their factory in Newcastle for the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, where it became the first steam locomotive to pull a passenger train on a public railway. In doing so, it became the first steam locomotive to both operate and haul a passenger-carrying train on a public railway in September 1825. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary. With the experience they gained, Robert Stephenson & Co. entered a design for the 1829 Rainhill Trials, held to find suitable motive power for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. Their entry, ‘Rocket’, was the clear winner and formed the basis for future steam locomotive design on the L&MR, which opened the following year. By 1838, locomotive design had already moved on, and 0-4-2 No. 57 ‘Lion’, was one of a pair of ‘luggage’ locomotives built to a Stephenson patent by Todd, Kitson & Laird of Leeds, also for the L&MR. Please note: Locomotion No.1 comes fitted with a Next 18-pin socket, but due to the locomotive's size limitations, sadly it cannot take an HM7000 Next 18-pin decoder. 12t Tanker Wagon, BP Shell 'A5066' The tank wagon was the main method of transporting liquid cargo in the early days of the railway. Instead of loading liquids into drums or barrels and then having to load these on and off closed or open vans at each side of a journey, the tank wagon could be filled with the fluid of choice of the operator and then emptied at the other end. This also increased the carrying capacity of each wagon, as a wagon with a 12-tonne weight limit could carry more fluid if it did not have to factor in the weight of many barrels on top of their contents. Southern Rail, T9 302 This locomotive was completed at the London & South Western Railway’s Nine Elms Works in late December 1900. Of the 66 built, 35 of the T9 Class were completed at Nine Elms, with a further 31 examples built by Dübs & Co at Polmadie in Glasgow. Nicknamed ‘Greyhounds’ as they consistently ran at speeds of up to 85mph, the last in service was No. 30120, which is preserved as part of the National Collection. Originally paired with a conventional six-wheel tender, it received an eight-wheel watercart version in July 1935. No. 5047 was built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows in 1935 with a domeless boiler and spent most of its career in Scotland. BR (Early), Class T9 30338 Designed for express passenger work on the London & South Western Railway, 66 of these elegant 4-4-0s were built between 1899 and 1901. Built at the LSWR’s Nine Elms Works, No. 30338 entered service in October 1901 as No. 338 and lasted in service until withdrawn by British Railways in April 1961, having completed a respectable 59 years and six months. This locomotive was the last of the class to be built at Nine Elms and had a wider cab and revised splashers compared to earlier class members. No. 92018 went new from Crewe to Wellingborough in October 1954 and was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in April 1967, after a wastefully short career of just 12 years and five months in service. GBRf, Class 67, Bo-Bo, 67027 The Class 67s were constructed by Alstom Meinfesa in Valencia between 1999 and 2000 for EWS. No. 67027 ‘Charlotte’ was named ‘Rising Star’ in 2003. Various changes took place over the years. In 2007, the ownership of the locomotive was transferred to DB Cargo UK. In 2014, the locomotive adopted the DB Cargo UK red livery, changing from the previous EWS red & yellow livery.  Ownership was again transferred to Colas Rail in 2017. To reflect this, the livery was amended to Colas Rail yellow, orange and black at the Toton TMD. The locomotive name changed to ‘Charlotte’ in the same year. In 2022, ownership was transferred to GB Railfreight and repainted in a blue and yellow livery, although this didn't last long as GBRF Rejected the 2 Class 67s and they were returned back to Colas. As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997, including 43062. The Class 43 locomotive was repainted in a Virgin red and black livery for use on CrossCountry services. Virgin handed over ten HST power cars in 2002. 43062 was given to Network Rail for use as part of the New Measurement Train (NMT). The locomotive was outshopped in a bright Network Rail yellow livery and because of this, the train was often referred to as the ‘Flying Banana’. The NMT travels at 125mph to monitor and record any faults on the track. 43062 was named ‘John Armitt’ after the chairman of the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission and had a red nameplate fitted. Loram UK won a Network Rail £8-million five-year contract to maintain the NMT in 2020. 43062 was recently overhauled at Loram Derby and returned to traffic in January 2024 with No. 43257 at the rear. No. E43063 No. E43063 was built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe in September 1977 and outshopped in a BR blue and grey livery. On 18th May 1991, 43063 could be seen at the Laira depot in a repainted InterCity Swallow livery and continued in service with this livery until 1997. As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997. 43063 was the first locomotive to be repainted in a Virgin CrossCountry red and black livery. Hon. Lord James Douglas-Hamilton QC & MP named the locomotive ‘Maiden Voyager’ to mark the launch of Virgin CrossCountry services, the same name given to Virgin’s first jumbo jet. Nameplates were fitted at Edinburgh station on 6th January 1997. 43063 ran in service with this name until the nameplates were removed in October 1999. In 2002, Virgin handed over 43063 to FGW who repainted it in a FGW blue and purple livery. Between 2006 and 2007, the locomotive faced an overhaul at Brush Traction and was fitted with an MTU 16V4000 R41 engine. FGW was renamed Great Western Railway in September 2015 and 43063 continued in service under the new name. No. E43063 No. E43063 was built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe in September 1977 and outshopped in a BR blue and grey livery. The locomotive was first allocated to the Bounds Green (BN) depot and 43063 was initially part of the 254004 set. On 18th May 1991, 43063 could be seen at the Laira depot in a repainted InterCity Swallow livery and continued in service with this livery until 1997. As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997. 43063 was the first locomotive to be repainted in a Virgin CrossCountry red and black livery. Hon. Lord James Douglas-Hamilton QC & MP named the locomotive ‘Maiden Voyager’ to mark the launch of Virgin CrossCountry services, the same name given to Virgin’s first jumbo jet. Nameplates were fitted at Edinburgh station on 6th January 1997. 43063 ran in service with this name until the nameplates were removed in October 1999. In 2002, Virgin handed over 43063 to FGW who repainted it in a FGW blue and purple livery. Between 2006 and 2007, the locomotive faced an overhaul at Brush Traction and was fitted with an MTU 16V4000 R41 engine. FGW was renamed Great Western Railway in September 2015 and 43063 continued in service under the new name. The first wagon was in service from 1892.  Design for the ‘Loriot’ wagons evolved to include sloping ramps at either end, enabling the machinery to be loaded and unloaded quickly and efficiently. Previous versions featured low, wide wells and no end ramps.  A new wagon in the series, ‘Loriot Y’, was constructed in 1937 to Diagram G39 and its number was No. 41989. An update to the design included ‘I’ beam girders rather than rolled beams and end-axle guard plates. No. 41990 (DW41990 under BR) was the second Loriot Y wagon to be constructed in 1939. The wagon conveyed excavators and other plant machinery over the GWR network. During the Second World War, the two wagons were used constantly to transport bulldozers for when there was wartime bombing. The ‘Loriot Y’ wagon model represents the prototypical wagon under BR ownership. The running number, DW41990, is emblazoned on the side. BR Intercity, Mk3 Tourist First, 41099 In-order to allow running at 125 mph on Britain's Victorian era railways, new rolling stock was needed by British Railways. Significant improvements over the Mk2 included new secondary air suspension between the bogies and the coach body as well as aerodynamic skirting on the underframe. Mk3 coaches are 75ft (23m) long, enabling far greater capacity than older coaches. Mk3 coaches also incorporate disk brakes and wheel slip protection enabling faster deceleration. The first Mk3 coaches to be delivered were used as part of the HST prototype along with the two Class 41 diesel power cars in 1972. Mk3 coaches entered service in 1975 along with the Class 43 forming the iconic InterCity 125 trainset. After the HST Mk3 coach variant was introduced, further Mk3 coaches were introduced to the West Coast Mainline for use as part of locomotive hauled trains. Whilst Mk3 stock is standard for HST units, the standard locomotive hauled stock is Mk3a. Mk3a stock differs from Mk3 stock due to the inclusion of buffers as well as a different electrical system that uses motor generator units in each coach to power air conditioning and other ancillaries Mk3a stock was built until 1984, before 3B stock with improved seating and lighting was built from 1985 to 1988. The Mark 3 coaches were introduced into service with the Class 43s as the Intercity 125 service. This top flight service was dressed in a variation of BR Blue with a grey window surround. The Class 43s would be painted in a complimentary colour scheme with yellow noses for safety reasons. The Mark 3 coaches would continue in service in this scheme until the late 1990s. During this period Gresley decided that it was time to rebuild 10000 as a three cylinder locomotive with a conventional firetube boiler. Subsequently, 10000 was moved to the Doncaster Works on 13 October 1936 and this is where the first drawing for the modification were being prepared. When 10000 was finally released from Doncaster Works in November 1937, it was a significantly different locomotive, being fitted with a diagram 111 boiler that was very similar to the diagram 108 boiler fitted to No. 2006 'Wolf of Badenoch', and with a streamlined casing to the same pattern as the A4 class. As many components as possible from the original W1 were used in the rebuild, including the frames, which were shortened by 1 ½ feet at the front end. Other items, where needed, were sourced from the A4 class, the A3 class or, like the front bogie, from the B17 and an experimental double Kylchap blastpipe and chimney was fitted. The locomotive was turned out in Garter Blue as per some of the A4's (in 1937 this became a standard livery). The cab, while similar to that of the A4 class, 60700 was considerably longer and this led to the locomotive's tender's coal delivery chute having to be lengthened to compensate for the extra distance from the firebox doors. The original tender was retained, but with superficial modifications, such as to the curvature of the front plates and the addition of streamlined plating to the front and rear, although this was partially removed just a year later in 1938. Up to the outbreak of war in 1939 and during the war years, 10000 worked mainly on Kings Cross main line duties and with its power and smooth riding it was a popular engine with the LNER's drivers, though less so with the firemen due to the distance between the shovelling plate and the firehole door. The locomotive also became more 'fitter' friendly after April 1942 when the skirting was removed from ahead and behind the outside cylinders to improve access in wartime conditions. At this time the 10000 was painted in wartime Black livery and with only 'N E' on the tender sides. By 1946 and now repainted in Garter blue livery, the corridor tender was swapped for the streamlined non-corridor tender from 4462 (BR 60004) William Whitelaw and the locomotive was engaged in more varied duties, working occasional passenger services to Leeds and Cambridge from Kings Cross alongside the occasional 'lodging' turns to Newcastle. By 1948 under the new British Railways, the locomotive received the number 60700 and "British Railways" insignia on the tender in Gills Sans font. Following allocation to Doncaster on 25 October 1953, 60700 became a more frequent visitor to Leeds and also worked turns to Sheffield, as well as hauling Doncaster to Peterborough passenger services and various braked goods trains. In a similar circumstance to 10000 never receiving its proposed name of 'British Enterprise' in November 1929, 60700 never received its intended name of 'Pegasus', for which the nameplates were cast on 13 April 1951. At this time the locomotive lost its Garter Blue livery for the new "Express Passenger Blue" with white and black lining. After an interesting and slightly troubled life, the locomotive was scrapped at its Darlington birthplace in 1959. Interesting to note is that as 60700 was going into works for scrapping, the original marine boiler the locomotive was fitted with, had been perched on bricks as steam raising boiler outside the works and outlasted the locomotive by a few years.

Hornby BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 - Era 4

BR, Class 9F, 2-10-0, 92002 Includes: - BR Black livery - Pipework represented in copper or heat lagging - Detailed cab interior - Accessory bag includes steam cocks - Removable coal load - 21 Pin DCC Decoder Socket - Era 4 - OO scale Locomotive information: The British Railways Standard 9F Class was a 2-10-0 steam locomotive, the last of the standardised BR designs. The Robert Riddles design was intended as a long distance heavy express freight locomotive. In total 251 of the class were produced between January 1954 and March 1960, with the final locomotive No. 92220 'Evening Star' being the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The huge length of the 10 coupled driving wheels proved problematic when faced with tight curves, a situation that freight haulage would make inevitable. A solution was found by removing the flanges from the centre driving wheel and reducing the size on the flanges on the second and fourth driving axle's wheels.  Riddles had chosen the 2-10-0 wheel configuration in-order to spread the load of the boiler over a greater area. This meant that the boiler had to be raised considerably compared to other designs to allow the firebox to sit above the trailing driving wheels. As a result, the 9F features a distinctive void between the suspended boiler and the footplate. In operation the class proved extremely versatile. Not only did the 9F excel as a freight locomotive, but when required it also succeeded as a passenger locomotive. Reports even suggest that when 92220 'Evening Star' was used to pull the Red Dragon express service between Cardiff and London it was forced to delay its arrival to allow the restaurant services to be completed, having outperformed the normal Britannia Class locomotives used on the service.  This was not the only time 9Fs had been recorded outperforming dedicated express locomotives and on such services the locomotives were capable of running at over 90mph. This combination of high speed, fast acceleration and powerful hauling capabilities mean that many consider the class to be pinnacle of British steam locomotive design. Locomotive numbers 92165-92167 were built with a mechanical stoker. This system used a helical screw to move coal from the tender straight into the firebox. This meant that coal could be burnt a faster rate than a fireman could maintain otherwise.  Systems like this proved extremely useful on long distance American railways however in Britain it was rare for a locomotive to require such as high rate of coal delivery over a long period of time meaning that a good fireman could prove just as effective. Locomotive 92002 was the third such locomotive to be constructed by BR, being built at Crewe in 1954. The locomotive was outshopped with the BR1G tender and in the usual BR black colour scheme. The locomotive would go on to be one of the 106 locomotives withdrawn in 1967, the locomotive would not be preserved.

SR, Luggage Van, 2467 - Era 3 Includes: - Olive Green Livery - Fine detailed handrails - Window detailing - NEM Coupling pockets - OO Scale Vehicle information and history: The Southern Railway Ganward Bogie Luggage Vans were initially introduced in SR Olive Green livery, a very small number gained malachite. Under British Railways they were in crimson, with as few as six painted BR Green. All were withdrawn during 1959 and 1960 with twelve lasting to 1961 for pigeon traffic. A few entered departmental use and two have been preserved. Number S2464S was painted in Pullman car livery in July 1962 and stored in readiness to be used as Sir Winston Churchill's funeral hearse on 30th January 1965. In total 120 of these bogie luggage vans were built between 1930 and 1931 utilising ex LSWR underframes and bogies surplus from the bogie block set coach bodies having been converted to electric stock. This model continues our affection for this particular van by presenting an alternate livery, another choice that may appeal to the collector drawn to a new appearence of this enduringly popular invention.

As well as working shunting duties at Leeman Road, 432478 also worked at the York Central Concrete Depot, which is now the site of the Railway Museum's main visitor car park. Ruston & Hornsby Ltd, of Lincoln, was formed as the result of the merger between Ruston, Proctor & Co. Ltd and Richard Hornsby & Sons Ltd on September 11, 1918 and their first narrow gauge diesel locomotive left the works on September 1, 1931. In the summer of 1932, production was moved to the larger Boultham Works, where the firm were eventually to become Britain's largest builder of diesel locomotives, with over 6,500 being built by the time production ceased in 1969. Almost as soon as the firm's 44/48HP 0-4-0 locomotives were making an appearance, an upgraded, more powerful 0-4-0 was on the drawing board. Although many of the features of the 44/48HP were retained for the new 80/88HP, such as the chain drive and running gear, a new type of transmission was fitted, along with Westinghouse airbrakes. The new power unit, Ruston's own 4VPB, delivered 80BHP at 1000rpm and was later supplanted by Ruston's improved 4VPH that delivered 88BHP, but it required compressed air to be injected into the cylinders to be able to start. While running, an air reservoir was kept charged via the braking system, but after standing idle for a period the reservoir depleted and a secondary source was required to recharge the reservoir. This was achieved by fitting a small, secondary 1½HP 'donkey' engine, giving rise to a distinctive raised cover on the right hand side of the engine compartment that differed in size and placement depending on the make of engine used. Two basic weight options were offered for the 80/88HP, of 17 tons and 20 tons, the difference being achieved by attaching weights to the outside frames, as well as to the front and rear buffer beams. In 1941, Ruston's locomotive classifications were changed, with the 80/88HP becoming 88DS (with the narrow gauge versions being assigned the DSM and DSN suffix, and the broader gauges assigned DSW). Outward appearance changes to the 'standard' locomotives were mainly confined to the cab area, with examples from mid-1947 replacing the open cab with a fully enclosed cab that featured several ad-hoc styles of front window. The final 88DS, 518494, left Boultham Works on 29 November 1967, bringing to an end a production run of 271 locomotives.

Since 1975 these powerful Bo-Bo locomotives have moved passengers across the country for business and for leisure, most ironically in their various BR guises. The Class 43 persists to this day as a stalwart of the rails under various operators including the mainline serving GWR, mainline maintaining Network Rail and some private operators such as Locomotive Services Limited on their Blue Pullman services.  This train pack, designed to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II depicts the Class 43 as they have never been seen before, in a livery questioning exactly how the legendary LNER would celebrate this special occasion if they were still operating, and nationalisation had never occurred. It would be nice to think that if the big four were never nationalised that we would still be able to see steam regularly on the mainline however this view is shrouded in nostalgia and ignores the operational benefits that diesel locomotives bring. If the LNER operated continuously into the modern era, this may be how they would mark this special occasion. The power cars in this set, while adorned with numbers that have been assigned to full size units, have had numbers chosen to celebrate prominent years of the queen’s reign. 43052 has been chosen as part of the numbering pattern for the full size examples and 52 for the year of the coronation, and 43022 follows the same pattern but for this very special year of Her Majesties reign.
