First built in 1898 as a smaller wheel shunting variant of the successful J71 class, the J72 continued to be built, with minor changes over the next 53 years. In 1937 two of the class were fitted with vacuum braking to work as carriage shunters and more followed from 1947 onwards, eventually leading to 41 members of the class being so fitted. Several of the vacuum brake fitted locomotives were repainted in lined passenger liveries by both the LNER and British Railways for use as station pilots. Locomotives so painted were generally keep very clean by shed staff and crews. The 113 members of the class all continued their sterling work until the first locomotive was withdrawn in 1958. The final locomotive was withdrawn out of normal service in 1964 but two were transferred to Departmental Stock, one of these locomotives lasted in this roll until 1967. One member of the class, number 69023 is preserved.

Class 142 142038 Regional Railways GMPTE
The British Rail Class 142 is a type of diesel railbus multiple unit designed to run in pairs for use on branch lines in Northern and South Western England and North Wales. Ninety six of the sets were built by BREL at Derby between 1985 and 1987 and followed on from the design of the Class 141. Initially, the Class 142 exhibited many operational problems including the inability to negotiate tight curves, a lack of power with poor braking and a rough uncomfortable ride. The class was extensively modified in subsequent years to overcome some of these shortcomings with the adoption of a more powerful diesel engine, uprated brakes and a plethora of internal and external detail improvements. Even with these changes the Class 142 was deemed unsuitable for working the tighter curves of the South Western rail system and the fleet was transferred post privatisation between NW Trains and Northern Spirit, where they are still used primarily on commuter routes between the major cities of the region.

No.E43062
No. E43062 was built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe in September 1977 and was outshopped in a BR blue and grey livery. The locomotive was first allocated to the Bounds Green (BN) depot and 43062 was initially part of the 254004 set. It was repainted in an InterCity Swallow livery after a few years in service.
As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997, including 43062. The Class 43 locomotive was repainted in a Virgin red and black livery for use on CrossCountry services.
Virgin handed over ten HST power cars in 2002. 43062 was given to Network Rail for use as part of the New Measurement Train (NMT). The locomotive was outshopped in a bright Network Rail yellow livery and because of this, the train was often referred to as the ‘Flying Banana’. The NMT travels at 125mph to monitor and record any faults on the track. 43062 was named ‘John Armitt’ after the chairman of the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission and had a red nameplate fitted.
Loram UK won a Network Rail £8-million five-year contract to maintain the NMT in 2020. 43062 was recently overhauled at Loram Derby and returned to traffic in January 2024 with No. 43257 at the rear.
No. E43063
No. E43063 was built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Crewe in September 1977 and outshopped in a BR blue and grey livery. The locomotive was first allocated to the Bounds Green (BN) depot and 43063 was initially part of the 254004 set. On 18th May 1991, 43063 could be seen at the Laira depot in a repainted InterCity Swallow livery and continued in service with this livery until 1997.
As British Railways prepared to be privatised, it sold its HSTs to Virgin in 1997. 43063 was the first locomotive to be repainted in a Virgin CrossCountry red and black livery. Hon. Lord James Douglas-Hamilton QC & MP named the locomotive ‘Maiden Voyager’ to mark the launch of Virgin CrossCountry services, the same name given to Virgin’s first jumbo jet. Nameplates were fitted at Edinburgh station on 6th January 1997.
43063 ran in service with this name until the nameplates were removed in October 1999. In 2002, Virgin handed over 43063 to FGW who repainted it in a FGW blue and purple livery. Between 2006 and 2007, the locomotive faced an overhaul at Brush Traction and was fitted with an MTU 16V4000 R41 engine. FGW was renamed Great Western Railway in September 2015 and 43063 continued in service under the new name.
Six GWR Class 43 HST power cars were stored at the Laira depot in 2020 and 43063 was among them, becoming a spares donor.

This Award Winning model certainly packs a punch when it comes to the detail, with separate metal handrails found throughout the locomotive and tender, lubricators and sand boxes along the running plate and separate pipework running from below the cab to the top feed on the boiler. The turned brass safety valves and whistle contrast beautifully with the firebox on which they are mounted, whilst inside the cab, the moulded back head detail has been decorated to pick out the individual gauges and controls. A hinged tender fall-plate provides the finishing touch to the highly impressive cab of this model.
When it comes to performance it’s hard not to marvel as you watch the Walschaerts valve gear in motion. The powerful coreless motor provides drive to the centre pair of driving wheels, whilst all six driving wheels are fitted with separate metal bearings and a pair of traction tyres are fitted to the rear driving wheels to aid traction. Electrical pick-up comes via all six driving wheels and all six tender wheels, with a semi-permanent loco-tender coupling system to ensure the two stay firmly coupled at all times.

IVATT 2MT HISTORY:
Designed by H. G. Ivatt for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), 128 of these Class 2 Moguls were built for light freight and passenger duties. With construction commencing in 1946, just twenty examples were built by the LMS and the remaining 108 were outshopped by British Railways following Nationalisation in 1948. The construction programme was completed in 1952 and these Mixed Traffic locomotives would go on to operate on all the BR regions, with the exception of the Southern. Light axle loadings allowed the Ivatt 2MTs to be used on most routes including branch lines, where their almost enclosed cabs made them ideal for working tender first when no turning facilities existed. The design provided the basis for the BR Standard Class 2MT 2-6-0, and the two are very similar in appearance, with the Standard version having only a modified cab and tender profile to allow unrestricted route availability across the British network.
With BR progressively closing more and more branch lines, and rationalising others – often employing new diesel multiple units to provide a more economical passenger service – duties for small locomotives like the Ivatt 2MTs began to disappear and the decline of the class began in 1961 when the first example was withdrawn. The Mogul’s versatility and its relatively modern design however ensured that many examples were still in traffic until the mid-1960s, but by 1967 all had been withdrawn. Thankfully, seven Ivatt 2MT have been preserved and the type is an ideal source of motive power for many of the trains running on heritage railways today.

Thomas The Tank Engine
Thomas is a blue six-wheeled (0-6-0 Tank) steam engine with the number 1 painted on his side tanks. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the 2nd book in Reverend Wilbert Awdry's The Railway Series, entitled 'Thomas the Tank Engine,' and he is the principal character in the 4 stories contained in the book. Thomas's best friends are Percy and Toby. He works on a branch line with his coaches Annie and Clarabel.
All of the locomotives in The Railway Series are based on real historical engines; Thomas has a resemblance to the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway's E2 class of 0-6-0 tank designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913.
