Locomotive information and history:
The Ffestiniog Railway was first built to haul Slate down to the Harbour at Porthmadog from the Hills of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Originally gravity worked, it soon became apparent that Steam power would be needed to help with the increasing demand from the quarries. It was decided in 1860 by the Board, to approve an order for steam locomotives to be built.
Between 1863 - 64, four small England Locomotives were built in for the Ffestiniog Railway under the design of locomotive designer and engineer, George England. The first four locomotives named - Princess Prince, Mountaineer and Palmerston. Originally built with Square side tanks and open cabs, they were very distinctive locomotives. By the 1880s, the locomotives were rebuilt into their current condition with Saddle-tanks and enclosed cabs. Unfortunately Mountaineer stayed in largely original condition for its entire life, but was withdrawn and scrapped by 1879.
Today Princess, Prince and Palmerston can still be seen running on the Ffestiniog Railway hauling passenger and demonstration slate/freight trains for everyone to enjoy.
