Historical Information:

Instanter couplings were first introduced by the Great Western Railway in 1907 for use in loose coupled freight trains. Their introduction was to reduce the slack of buffering effect by tightening the link up before a train heads out onto the mainline. This meant when the train slowed down, there was less effect on the wagons buffering into each other and causing a potential accident. The design continued in use on wagons into the 1950s, until use of continuous vacuum braking and the huge changes of the "Beeching Report" eliminated the traditional "loose coupled" freight.
