Building information and history:
This is part of a new range of Laser-cut wood building kits, all based on buildings on the existing West Highland Line extension between Fort William and Mallaig in Scotland. Arisaig station is the inspiration for these attractive range of buildings now produced by Peco. The line is most famous now for its role in the Harry Potter films. The route is a firm favourite with modellers and enthusiasts alike.
Arisaig station was built around 1901 to serve the village of Arisaid, located just to the south of the station.
Originally the station had two platforms, the down platform having the main station building on it (LK203) and on the opposite side a platform shelter building (LK204).
The signal box (LK202) which has been closed since 1983 and granted Grade B Listed status is located on the north end of the up platform. There was goods facilities at Arisaig in the form of a loading platform served by a single siding.Today this is used for departmental trains and storage.
The station never had a footbridge and so passengers would have to cross on 'barrow crossings'/ foot crossings at the station platform ends. The station is typical of many on this stretch of the West Highland line and is lucky to have kept lots of its original features blended in with modern lighting and signage. This makes it ideal for modelling in several eras.
